Fuel mixture for two-stroke engines
Grass trimmers, which are equipped with a two-stroke motor, do not have a separate system designed to supply oil to lubricate the rubbing parts. For this reason it is not necessary to fill such devices with pure gasoline, but with a mixture of fuel and engine oil. The latter must be specifically designed for two-stroke engines. Using automotive engine fluid will cause premature engine failure.
Preparation of fuel mixture for two-stroke engines
Filling the lawnmower with a two-stroke engine should be fueled with AI-92 brand gasoline. If you use AI-95 you may notice overheating of the engine and uneven machine operation. Gasoline and oil should be mixed in the ratio 50:1, where 50 is fuel and 1 is oil. You would need 20 ml of oil per litre of fuel.
If the engine is worn out or the tool operates with a high load, the proportion is 25:1. If there is not enough grease, there will be scuffing on the cylinder walls and piston surface. The piston ring will then fracture, causing the engine to seize. Overkill is not critical, but can cause fouling. The piston ring will get coked in this case, which reduces the power of the device.
Proportion of oil and petrol for fuel mixture
Classification of motor oils:
Required parameters of oils for 2T engines are prescribed in API TC JASO FC, API TC JASO FC ISO GD and API TC JASO FC E-GC. The most widespread were the API classification systems. Therefore, 2T motor oils are divided into four big groups:
TA. suitable for domestic appliances with air cooling system and engine volume not more than 50 cm3.
Tutorial Shorts. Filling Up Lawn Equipment (Lawn Mower)
TB. used for heavy-duty equipment with air-conditioning system and engine displacement of 50. 200 cm3.
TC. Used in machinery with high demands on the quality of oil. High quality lubricant for double stroke engines up to 50 vol.m. 200 cm3. Very suitable for lawn mowers, brush cutters, trimmers, circular saws and other garden equipment.
TD. for inertia engines with liquid cooling.
Most suitable material for 2T motors of class API-TB and API-TC. However, you should directly refer to the data sheet, where the manufacturer specifies the brand of engine oil, recommended for its equipment.
Important! For brushcutters, lawn mowers and other 2T garden equipment, a special motor oil for two-stroke engines with air cooling system and the designation “for garden equipment” is required. Do not use the oil for 2T engines with a rare cooling system. Also not recommended oil for conventional combustion engines, motorcycles and other equipment.
What effect does biologically-added gasoline have on motorized lawnmowers?
According to Urmas Kuuse, head of Neste Eesti wholesalers, this year consumers can fill their mowers with both 95 and 98 petrol. Habits will have to change next year when the requirements for biofuels will become stricter.
“Consumers who have so far been filling their lawnmowers with 95 gasoline will be able to use the same fuel next year. The biofuel requirements, which took effect in May, are only slightly stricter than in previous years. In addition, the current requirements are no stricter than those of the manufacturers of garden equipment.”. said Urmas Kuuse.
“But as of next year, lawn mowers and other garden equipment with petrol engines will have to use 98 gasoline. This is due to the gradual increase in the use of biofuel: in Estonia today, biofuel must comprise at least 3.1% of the total amount of fuel sold; as of 1 January 2019, 95 petrol must contain at least 6.4%, and from 2020, at least 10% biofuel.”. Kuuse added.
The use of automotive fuel in lawn mowers and other garden equipment is widespread. But Kuuse still advises to remember that in a domestic canister fuel should not be stored longer than 30 days, because as a result of the interaction of fuel with air, its quality inevitably deteriorates.
As an alternative, Kuuse recommends the use of fuel for small engines (alkyl gasoline), which is the most safe and reliable choice for both the engine and the user, because it produces less smoke and lasts longer.
In case of doubt, consult the instruction manual or ask the retailer or service provider for advice. “As a rule, manufacturers specify in the owner’s manual what the lowest octane gasoline is allowed to use.”. Added Urmas Kuuse.
What kind of gasoline to put in a lawn mower?
The article below discusses in detail how and what kind of gas to put in your lawn mower.
Gasoline lawn mower is in high demand in today’s market, due to its high power, as well as free movement on large areas.
A lawnmower is an engine in a housing with cutting surfaces for cutting the grass. Gasoline lawnmowers are powered by air-cooled, four-stroke internal combustion engines. Oil for four-stroke engines is not mixed with gasoline, but poured into a special separate neck. Let’s now understand what kind of gasoline to put in a lawn mower? Most frequently used fuels are AI 92, AI 95 and AI 98, which have an octane rating of 85 or higher.
AI 92 gasoline is extremely popular in the Russian market and includes a set of petrochemical components, which are produced through direct distillation of crude oil. AI 95 grade gasoline has an octane rating and is one of the most stable fuels. AI 95 gasoline density specified by GOST (Russian State Standard) meets the requirements of the Euro-standard. Gasoline AI 98 refers to the highest quality fuel products. The use of this grade of gasoline increases engine power, reduces fuel consumption and deposits in the intake system.
It should be noted that petrol should be filled in a well-ventilated area, and, taking into account its ability to expand at high temperature, a small space should be left in the fuel tank.

What petrol to choose for your lawnmower so you don’t ruin your lawnmower
You don’t need any special training to service a gasoline engine. It’s easy enough if you carefully read the instructions and recommendations for operating the lawnmower. If the unit has a four-stroke engine, once a year the lubricant needs to be changed and the air filter needs to be cleaned. The two-stroke motor consumes a mixture of fuel, which you just need to learn how to prepare, it also needs timely cleaning of the air filter.
Choice of fuel
Preparation of fuel for a two-stroke motor consists of mixing a special engine oil (you buy it at the same place where lawnmowers or car parts) with gasoline. Mineral oil is mixed with fuel in the ratio of 1 to 32 (or 1 to 35), and if it is synthetic, then the ratio of 1 to 50. all this must be indicated on the package. You can prepare fuel for the lawnmower for the whole season, for this purpose, in a 5-liter canister of gasoline add 100 g of oil.
To answer the question: “What kind of gasoline to use??”. the answer is simple: the brand should not be higher than the one specified by the manufacturer of the lawnmower. The octane number is important. the higher it is, the longer the combustion time of the fuel, if you use a higher grade of fuel, it will reduce the operating time of your device. The four-stroke engine has a crankcase that contains the grease that lubricates the engine, so it is fueled only with gasoline. But it will have to be changed at intervals of 50 hours, whatever it is, since there is no special oil filter.
You can refuel only when the engine has cooled down, and the tank should not be filled “up to the eyeballs”, you must leave some space for expansion. Of course, you always have to be on the safe side.
Can I fill my lawnmower with 95° gasoline
The gardening season is about to begin. Get your machine ready for the season.
A properly mixed fuel-oil mixture, will ensure smooth running of the engine, complete combustion without formation of soot, smoke or burnt fuel.
For the mixture you need to use 92 gasoline and two-stroke oil (synthetic).
Fuel below 92, with a lower octane number is not suitable. We do not recommend a 95octane gasoline.к. it contains many different additives that can adversely affect the operation of gasoline equipment.
Mix the mixture before each use of the machine. Don’t mix too much.
The oil-fuel mixture must not be stored for more than 2 weeks, then irreversible processes of oxidation and changes in the mixture composition take place.
i.e. per 1 liter of petrol. 20 milliliters of oil.
(or this mixing ratio: 100 ml of oil to 5 liters of petrol).
A full tank at full load lasts 30 to 45 minutes, if you do not plan to use the machine that long, do not fill a full tank.
Do not use old petrol, it wears out with time and changes the octane rating.
Never fill a power tool with pure gasoline if you have a 2-stroke engine. that could lead to serious and costly repairs.
Only gasoline and oil mixtures are allowed for refueling.
Why an incorrect mixture ratio can put the machine out of gear?
The thing is that unlike 4-stroke engines, 2-stroke engines do not have an external lubrication system for the internal parts of the engine, a properly prepared fuel mixture is very important for them. If you add little oil, the lubricating properties of the mixture will decrease, leading to rapid wear of the equipment. Conversely, if too much oil is added. It will affect the combustibility of the mixture and greatly reduce the power of the machine.
The engine does not have a separate oil sump and all parts that rub against each other are lubricated with oil. that is in the fuel mix.
the oil should lubricate all rubbing surfaces inside the engine and burn without formation of soot. This is the fundamental difference between oils for 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines.
In addition to the above functions oil should:
- sealing the gaps, first of all, between the parts of the cylinder-piston group, preventing and minimizing bursting of gases from the combustion chamber.
- dissipate heat generated by fuel combustion and friction.
- prevent corrosion of engine parts.
Mix the components in gasoline-resistant containers, not in the tank itself! Pour petrol into a clean, dry canister and then add oil.
In the reverse order there is no need to t.к. the oil poured in first will stick to the bottom and is hardly able to mix later on, you will have to make more efforts. After adding both ingredients, close the container tightly and shake it thoroughly, vigorously mixing the components.
Preparation of fuel mixture: proportion of oil and gasoline for a chainsaw
The chainsaw engine is the “heart” of the tool, that is why it is very important to use a properly mixed fuel.
The fuel mixture for a chainsaw is made of two components. oil and gasoline. Chainsaws are equipped with two-stroke engines, so oil is not added to the lubrication system (as in a four-stroke engine), but directly to the gasoline. It is very important to observe correct proportions of ingredients and, of course, in no case try to work with pure gasoline, because that way you will very quickly “kill” the chainsaw.
The oil must always be intended for two-stroke engines used in forestry machinery (i.e., never use oil for boat engines or scooters). As practice shows such oil can be bought in any store or service center, where chainsaws are sold or serviced.
If we talk about what gasoline to fill a chainsaw, it is optimal to use fuel with the octane number of A-95, in this case, the savings on fuel can turn out badly. Often, European manufacturers specify that it is possible to use gasoline A-90 or A-92, but in post-Soviet countries the quality of gasoline is inferior to European, so in our realities it’s better to use high-quality gasoline.
As for the petrol-oil mixture ratio itself, everything is simple: you need to follow the instructions of the tool clearly. All chainsaw manufacturers indicate the necessary ratio in the instruction manual or in the passport of the tool, besides, the proportions for filling the chainsaw may differ depending on the model of the chainsaw. As a rule, the proportion of oil and gasoline to the gasoline chainsaw known manufacturers is a ratio of 1:40 or 1:50, which means 1 part oil in, for example, 40 parts of gasoline.
Now the arithmetic: 1 liter of gasoline = 1000 ml of gasoline, divide by 40 and you get 25 ml of oil. If you do the same for a 1:50 ratio, you get 20 ml of oil for 1 liter of gasoline.
As for budget chainsaws made in China, the situation is a little different. gasoline to oil ratio for chainsaws made in China 1:25, so divide 1000 ml of gasoline by 25, and you have 40 ml of oil. The thing is that in branded chainsaws has a solid build and the distance between the pistons and cylinders in the engine is much smaller than in Chinese chainsaws, so the required amount of oil is almost twice as different.
To measure the right amount of oil, use an ordinary medical syringe of sufficient volume.
One more subtlety. in a dry gasoline canister, pour the gasoline first, then the oil. The opposite procedure is fraught with a poor quality fuel mixture, because the oil is denser and will stick to the bottom of the canister. That’s why a good mixture is out of the question.
Be sure to prepare the fuel mixture in a canister and fill the fuel tank with ready-to-use special fuel! Never prepare and mix it directly in the fuel tank of the chainsaw!
If the question of how to dilute gasoline for a chainsaw figured out, then, and On the conditions of storage and shelf life of the fuel mixture it is worth saying a few words. It is best and easiest to prepare gasoline-oil mixture for 1 liter of gasoline, it is recommended to do it just before working with the tool. Gasoline chainsaws have a capacity of 0.3 to 1 liter. In conditions of domestic use, the entire volume of the prepared combustible mixture is rarely used in one session, so the remainder can be stored until the next session of work. It is necessary to store the fuel mixture in a special canister for petrol in a dark dry place. It is optimal to calculate that storage period of the prepared mixture is 7-10 days
The reason is that the oil on the market today is not synthetic, but organic. that is, natural. After 10 days all lubricating properties are gone, gasoline simply “eats up” the oil. Naturally, it is no longer possible to use such fuel, it can cause breakdown and failure of the chainsaw.
At the end of the work it is necessary to drain the fuel mixture and start the chainsaw. the tool will stall (so that the saw has a dry carburetor) and now you can leave it until the next session of operation.
