Cutters for power tillers: selection, use, self-made

Cutter for power tillers. one of the most common types of additional equipment for tillage. It is a set of special blades fixed on the axle. With their help, you can quickly and easily get rid of weeds, make ground cultivation on the plot. In order to choose the optimal type of cutter for your power tiller, you should slightly classify them.

According to the arrangement of the cutters, they can be side-mounted or mounted. Sideways are mounted on either side of a singleaxle tractor, powered by the wheels’ drive shafts. In fact, with this arrangement, these cutters replace the wheels and drive the machine.

The second type. a power take-off shaft-operated cutter, which is located at the back of the machine and does not participate in the movement. Motoblocks of the brands Celina, Neva MB-1 and MB-2, MTZ have exactly such a cutter device.

Two kinds of milling cutters are distinguished by the design of the blades. saber-shaped (active, standard) and the so-called goose-footed.

Active cutters

Active power tiller consists of a set of four powerful blades, set at an angle of 90° relative to each other. There can be two or more such sets on one axis. The number and size of additional blades depends on the power of the power tiller. blades of this mill have the shape of curved strips bent alternately in different directions. Their design and ruggedness allow you to safely process virgin land and areas where there are stones and roots.

The second power tiller is the gooseneck tiller. the product received its name for the unusual shape of the cutting elements, reminiscent of a goose’s legs. They are triangular in shape and located on the edges of the stakes. The number of cutting elements and size of this module also depends on the power of a power tiller. The more racks with knives, the better processing.

This cutter is capable of processing heavy virgin and clay soils, but in areas with increased vegetation and roots, the product is likely to clog.

Cutter types

Active sabre mill is supplied from the manufacturer in a disassembled version. This is due not only to the fact that so the product is more compact (that is, it is cheaper and easier to transport), but also to the peculiarities of the metal, which does not like welding. Before installing the cutter on a single axle tractor, it is necessary to assemble it.

Correctly, accurately and clearly written textual instructions for the assembly of the cutter is a necessary document for the production of this work. However, it is also very handy if you have at hand a well-written assembly diagram of a tiller for a power tiller. Often information is better perceived by a person through drawings, not through words. That is, one in this case perfectly complements the other. Also on the Internet you can easily find a lot of assembly milling machines, including those where the master is not only assembling cutter, but also simultaneously explains what he does. It’s much more instructive for onlookers.

The necessary materials and tools

The active sabre cutter uses only bolted connections between the component parts. This means that it is not necessary to use complex and expensive equipment (for example, a welding machine). No special skills are required. virtually anyone can master this task, even if they have no special training. Bolts, nuts and washers are generally already included with the milling machines. But it happens that the factory generally forgot to put the right bag, or made a mistake with the quantity (in the package there are less fasteners than required). Then the necessary parts can be purchased at the market, in a construction supermarket or in a specialized store. it is not a problem at all. A wrench of the right size is also available to many in the garage or at home, and if suddenly it is not available, the purchase of the right tool will not hit the budget.

In brief, the assembly of the tiller for the power tiller is done in the following order:

  • Choose the correct direction of rotation. During operation, the sharpened part of the tiller will run into the ground.
  • Use the bolts to install the cutter blades in the sockets that are specially designed for this purpose.
  • Then put washers on the bolts and tighten the nuts carefully.

To make a mistake in the process is not so easy, because everything is clear even intuitively. However, you should pay attention to the fact that the blades are marked L and R by embossing in the factory. L means that the part will be installed on the left side, and R. on the right side, respectively.

The additional section is attached to the main section with a pin. The limiting disc is connected to the rest of the unit with a bolt and nut.

How to assemble a cutter on a single axle tractor

As our contacts with the buyers showed, some owners of Skiper tillers and power tillers have some problems with the assembly of cutters for our machines. To begin with let’s speak about the differences of our devices. Cutters for Skiper power tillers are available in two variants:

  • For 23mm diameter axles. Used on Skiper SK-700 and Skiper SK-850 power tillers;
  • For 32mm diameter axles. Skiper SK-100, Skiper SK-1400, SK-1600.

You should also be aware that different numbers of power tillers are available for the Skiper axles:

The number of cutting blades in each section can also be different. three or four. It depends on the position of fixing plates on the axle. If your product comes with a straight axle with no offset mounting plates, that means three tines per section. If the attachment squares are offset in relation to each other, that means there must be four cutters on each section.

To assemble the four blades, place the left and right side cutters one after the other on the fixing plate. For convenience of assembly we recommend to divide all cutters into two parts, in each of which there will be equal left and right blades. It is important to note that the blades must point in the direction of the cultivator’s travel. The additional unit is secured to the main unit with a pin.

Assembly of the three-blade cutter starts with fixing the first cutter to the mounting plate. The bolt can be tightened, but not tightened, as it will need to be removed later. The other two cutters are installed on the opposite side of the attachment plate, so as to bolt all three cutters to the axis. Here it is important to make sure that all cutter edges are in the direction of travel of the cultivator. Parts marked R are installed on the right side of the machine, those marked L are installed on the left side. Additional section is fastened by means of a pin.

But, as they say, it’s better to see once than to read or hear 10 times. As a bonus, the company “Alfagrad” provides an opportunity through video to get acquainted with the assembly of cutters. Enjoy watching!

Do cutters need to be sharpened on a singleaxle tractor

There is no definite answer to this question. Opinions of beginners and even experienced gardeners are contradictory. Some say that sharpening significantly improves and speeds up the cultivation process. Others argue that it doesn’t make sense, since even cutter manufacturers don’t require it.

Summarizing the experience of one side and the other, among the arguments in favor of sharpening cutters are the following:

  • Sharpened cutting surfaces of equipment more easily penetrate the ground, speeding up the process of work.
  • From the first advantage is the reduced load on the power unit of the power tiller, which prolongs its life and reduces fuel consumption.
  • For light cultivators and with insufficiently good blade material, working with blunt milling cutters is almost impossible. In this case, sharpening is really the only solution.

The arguments of the opponents of sharpening cutters are as follows:

  • The sharp cutting surface promotes a strong crushing of weeds, as a result of which the process of vegetative multiplication is repeatedly intensified. From this point of view, the process of winding weeds on a blunt burr is preferred.
  • As a result of the sharp blade, the sense of cultivation is lost, because instead of breaking up the soil, it is simply cut up and left to lie in large clods.
  • Sharpening the burrs is quite time consuming, because apart from the actual sharpening, the burrs must first be disassembled and then reassembled correctly. In this case, the sharpness of the cutting elements is only kept for a short time. After that the procedure must be repeated.

Homemade tillers for power tillers

Manufacturers offer different versions of tillers for power tillers. You can use one set of cutters or buy two different types of devices, changing them depending on the soil conditions.

Some craftsmen prefer to use homemade products, which, if properly assembled, will be no worse than the factory ones.

The main advantage of making a self-made tiller is that it can be adjusted to the specific features of the plot.

Cutter on a singleaxle Kentavr tractor: value, application

Cutter for the Kentavr power tiller when working breaks up large clumps of soil, allows you to comprehensively process the soil, which is the main task of the device.

The milling unit consists of blades (made of strong steel), which are bolted to the frame. The framework itself is presented in the form of a so-called “herringbone”.

It should also be noted that the active tiller for power tiller allows first-class processing of the ground, and with minimal labor costs.

Mounting the tillers on a singleaxle tractor

To install cutters on a singleaxle tractor, you should use special wooden trestle, the height of which should be about 50 cm. The unit should be supported on the coulter and tilted at an angle of 45 degrees. Then the wheels are removed and the tillers are put on. Special plates are installed on the outer ends on both sides, which make the machine run smoother and more steadily.

All tillers are self-sharpening tools. There is no need to sharpen them as they will only damage the construction. Only in some cases if you use the tiller for a long time and you see that it became hard to work the land, you can sharpen the blades.

Soil cutter. an important element of every machine. Homemade properly assembled tillers can be used on any modern power tillers, in particular on the Neva MB 1 and MB 2, MTZ and others. These designs will help you work the land and make farming tasks easier.
