Connection angle, tricks for tight connections
It is not possible to cut a perfect joint angle using a blunt blade. Before you start, you can check the sharpness of the blade by cutting a 45-degree angle on a small piece of oak or other hardwood. If the blade cuts evenly with little pressure and leaves a clean, almost shiny cut with no burns, this is a fairly sharp blade. For quality
The water flow does not affect the quality of the cut, the blade must have at least 40 teeth with Pobedite tips.
With what and how to cut the tile at an angle of 45 degrees
Electric tile cutter
The electric tile cutter is an expensive but necessary tool for a lot of tile cutting. Makes a straight cut and nailing at a selected angle. You can set the value from 0 to 45. In practice, we most often cut tiles at 45 degrees. Quality models are equipped with a cooling system. Thanks to this, the tile and the tool is not in danger of overheating and the dustiness of the workplace is reduced. The quality of the cut is not affected by the water flow.
The 45 degree tile cutting machine with cooling system can be operated at high revolutions.
Consider purchasing an electric tool if you want to trim hard, expensive material like porcelain tile. The following models are the most popular:
- Zubr EP-200-1000S (Russia). stationary floor tile cutter. It is an expensive machine (21-22 thousand), designed for professionals and allows you to saw off tiles of any thickness.
- Zubr EP-180-600H (Russia). a compact desktop model. It is used for straight cutting and cutting tiles at an angle from 0 to 45 degrees. Characterized by a low noise level and absence of dust: water flows to the place of cutting. Reasonable price (4000 ) can be attractive to novice craftsmen.
- Models Feida TC 200 and Feida TC 250 (China) help to cut high quality accurate chamfering at an angle from 0 to 45 degrees.
- Tile cutting machine Einhell TH-TC 618 (China). allows you to cut and trim various ceramics, provided that the depth of trimming will not exceed 22 mm.
If the glaze on the tile is scraped in the process of cutting, it will be jagged. In this case, you will have to carefully grind the chips with sandpaper.
If you cut the tile a little less than 45 degrees, it will be easier to form a right angle.
The tool will be a must if you are engaged in tile laying and conduct a large number of undercuts material.
To work in one apartment to buy an electric tile cutter is not rational. Qualitatively cut ceramic tiles under 45 degrees you can use an angle grinder (angle grinder). It is easier and faster to file a corner using a diamond disc. Most likely, the edge will turn out uneven. Such defects are sanded with turtles. If during the laying of tiles to file the material is necessary only within one apartment, you can instead use a cheaper option: a removable sanding discs on velcro.
Important! You should choose a high-power angle grinder with a speed regulator (during trimming the minimum value is set).
Models that are reasonable in price and technical characteristics are:
Quality diamond discs:
- BIZON 0512003, thickness 1.8 mm;
- Union 9020-04-150x22K, h= 2 mm;
- Expert (180×25.4/22.2 mm) PRACTICE 034-793 (for porcelain tile);
- Professional KEOS DBP01.200 on porcelain stoneware (180×25.4/22.2).
The quality of the cut depends on the type of attachment on the angle grinder for the final 45-degree cut. The diamond wheel (flexible, grinding) AGSHK 100 0 “Turtle” provides a good result.
How to cut a tile at 45 degrees?
In order for the corner of the two tiles looked beautifully, when trimming the tile should not reach the glaze (0.5-1mm). That is, only the clay is cut. If you go over the glaze (the front part of the tile), it will be “torn” and scratchy. This will immediately catch the eye, it’s not pretty.
This is the problem we encountered when cutting wavy tile. But more about that later.
Surely many of you have seen such “work of art”, but most often everyone thinks it should be like this. And yet the tiler with twenty years of experience, he assures me that the other way can not be and.
Even if there is a need to trim the corner of the tile is not from the “factory” edge and have to cut the glaze, there is still a way to do it beautifully.
First, to do this you must first cut the tile evenly (to the right size), and then, again, not reaching the glaze, trim it at 45°. The cut will be much cleaner and prettier.
You can also process the edge of the glaze with a fine sandpaper, from this it will be even smoother.
Secondly, you can still cut the corner of the beautiful edge (factory end), and trimmed the opposite edge of the processed sandpaper and hide the other side. It will be less conspicuous.
That’s what we did once, for example, when we were tiling a toilet installation. Because a beautiful angle is more important than the bottom seam. All the more so because it turned out to be very neat, too, and if you don’t know that it’s trimmed, you’ll never pay attention to it.
How to cut a square corner?
For this purpose it is enough to use any tool for the drawing. When cutting a profile at an angle of 90 degrees you must align one edge with the plane of the angle, and at the second edge run the trimmer line across the shelf.
When cutting a corner under 45 degrees Metal Holding recommends to use a protractor. However, if you do not have this tool at hand, you need to measure the width along the angle and run a line for the trimmer from that point to the intersection of the flanges at the point of the notch.
There is not always a chisel, although for an even cut, it is a very useful thing. But sometimes you don’t even need it if you have a sheet of paper at hand.
You can make a paper trimmer. It is enough to put this simple marking on the paper:
And the resulting template is quite suitable for use instead of a tool.
In order not to get tangled when sawing, you need to remember:
- The right side is cut from the left side, and in the jig is placed on the right side
- The left, respectively, is placed in the jigsaw on the left side, and is sawed off on the right
For the decor elements used on ceilings or walls, there are exactly the same corner fittings as for the floor ones. With its help, you can save yourself from having to do something with the corner joints at all.
Such joints also look beautiful, and you will have to do much less. But evenly joined decor elements still look more neat and generally look more interesting. So it is better to work a little, but to do everything the way real craftsmen do.
The product is placed along the perimeter of a rectangular room. It is cut to finish right corners. Consequently, we will consider how to cut the skirting board at 45 degrees.
Cutting with the use of the jigsaw
What is a cross-head?? This is a special tray made of wood, aluminum or plastic with grooves provided to guide the saw at the desired angle.
Here is a brief instruction on how to use such a carpentry tool:
- Preparing. Take the product and put it in the tray. Align to the position in which it will be installed on the ceiling.
- Cut it. Insert the cutting tool into the groove with the other hand. It can be a knife or hacksaw. And bravely cut. The attachment will not let you miss the intended location.
Good to know: The metal blade is also suitable for cutting Styrofoam.
- Machining. Wood skirting boards may need to be further trimmed with a file to even out the cut edges. The plastic or styrofoam can be corrected with a knife, as long as it is sharp enough.
Tip: When cutting, do not put pressure on the product. Styrofoam can crumble, and wood can split.
Cutting without a chisel
If you do not have such a device, and you are not going to buy it for a single use, then you can use the following ways how to cut the baseboard at 45 degrees.
- The first way is to make this simple carpentry tool yourself. To do this, we knock down the most common tray made of wood. Then we measure the lines of the cuts with a protractor or a school square. We cut grooves and we have prepared a primitive device.
- The second way. How to cut a skirting board at an angle, even more simple. It is particularly painless to use it in those cases where the corners of the room are not even.
We don’t need a tray. Two boards knocked down at 90 degrees and a stencil of cardboard with a line drawn for orientation are enough.
- The third way. In this case, we do not knock down anything at all, and we just use a table or any other similar construction against the wall.
The future joints are marked directly on the product itself, on the wall and on the ceiling. We put the skirting board the way we are going to install it, and cut it according to the marks we made.
Keep in mind: during cutting hold the tool strictly vertically to get a right angle.
5 degree pattern. 45 degree corner template
Often the home handyman has an urgent need to make some measurement or marking at a certain angle, and either an angle piece or protractor is not at hand. In this case a few simple rules will help him out.
If you urgently need to build a right angle and do not have a square, you can use any printout. The corner of the paper sheet is a very precise right angle ( 90 degrees ).). Cutting (punching) machines in printing houses are set up very precisely. Otherwise the initial roll of paper will begin to cut crookedly and askew. So you can be sure that this angle is exactly right.
And if there is not even a printed edition or you need to build a corner on the ground, for example when marking the foundation or a sheet of plywood with rough edges? In this case the rule of the golden (or Egyptian) triangle will help us.
The golden (or Egyptian, or Pythagorean) triangle is a triangle with sides that relate to each other as 5:4:3. According to the Pythagoras theorem, in a right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the cathetuses. Т.е. 5×5 = 4×4 3×3. 25=169 and it is undeniable.
Therefore, to build a right angle, it is sufficient to draw a straight line on the workpiece for a trimmer of length 5 (10,15,20, etc.д. multiple of 5 cm). And then, from the edges of this line begin to measure off on one side 4 (8,12,16, etc.e in multiples of 4 cm), and on the other. 3 (6,9,12,15, etc.д. divisible by 3 cm) distances. Should produce arcs with a radius of 4 and 3 cm. Where these arcs intersect each other will be a right angle (90 degrees).
These angles are usually used when making rectangular frames. The material from which the frame (baguette) is made is sawn under angle of 45 degrees and joined. If you don’t have a straightedge or protractor handy, you can get a 45 degree angle pattern as follows. It is necessary to take a sheet of writing paper or any printed publication and bend it so that the line for the bending trimmer passed exactly through the corner, and the edges of the bent sheet coincided. The resulting angle is 45 degrees.
A wooden lantern house with your own hands
Angle of 60 degrees is required to build equilateral triangles. For example, you need to saw these triangles for decorative work or accurately set the power slope. The 30 degree angle is rarely used in its pure form. However, with it (and with the 90 degree angle), the 120 degree angle is constructed. And this is the angle needed to build equilateral hexagons, a figure very popular among carpenters.
To build a very accurate template of these angles at any time you need to remember the constant (number) 173. It follows from the ratios of the sines and cosines of these angles.
Take a sheet of paper from any printed publication. Its angle is exactly 90 degrees. From the angle on one side measure 100 mm (10 cm.), and on the other side measure 173 mm (17.3 cm). Connect these points. So we got a template, which has one corner of 90 degrees, one of 30 degrees and one of 60 degrees. You can check with a protractor. everything is accurate!
Remember this number. 173, and you can always construct angles of 30 and 60 degrees.
When marking out workpieces or constructions on parts, it is not only the corners themselves which are important, but also their proportions. This is especially important when making rectangular parts or e.g. when marking foundations, cutting large sheets of material. Incorrect drawing or marking brings later on a lot of unnecessary work or to the appearance of a large number of wastes.
Unfortunately even very precise marking tools, even professional ones, always have a certain margin of error.
There is, however, a very simple method of determining whether a pattern or construction is rectangular. In a rectangle, the diagonals are absolutely equal! So, after the construction, you need to measure the lengths of the diagonals of the rectangle. If they are equal, all is well, it really is a rectangle. If not, you have constructed a parallelogram or rhombus. In this case it is necessary to “play” a little with adjacent sides to achieve exact (for this case) equality of diagonals of the marked rectangle.
The disadvantages of the corner on the tile, sharpened at 45 degrees :
Corner becomes more vulnerable to impacts. Especially if it is on the aisle. It is enough to hook the slope with an empty metal bucket so that the piece of the washed corner on the tile, flew away. The labor intensity of the work increases, and therefore the price.

Catch such a corner can be anything, even a harmless belt buckle of a trouser belt:

Prepare a 45 degree angle on the tiles can also be done with the help of an angle grinder. A lot of dust. Wrong quality. But realistically. The main thing is cheap and always possible.
It is especially important to indicate the correct angle when laying decorative stone. Often the corner elements for such products are not provided or are not available. Cutting stone at a 45-degree angle is the only way to get out of a situation like this.
