Circular saws. a summary of the most important

For carpenters, board and bar are the most common blanks, from which the production of crafts and wood products is further carried out.

And the first thing the material is exposed to is sawing into pieces of the desired length.

In this case, you should know how to evenly saw a board, because the wrong performance of this operation can spoil the workpiece or significantly affect the appearance, and not for the better.

And the first thing to which the material is cut is the sawing into pieces of the required length.

Thus it is necessary to know how to saw off a board precisely, after all incorrect performance of this operation can spoil a preparation or essentially influence on appearance, and not for the better.

In large enterprises there is no problem how to saw off a bar or a board evenly. In any serious industry there is high-precision equipment that performs this type of work.

In the home we have to make do with what is available at hand.

In this case the tool or equipment you still need to know how to use competently to cut a board correctly, and the cut was obtained without imperfections.

Note that many companies that sell boards and beams, provide services for their cutting. And for this they use all the same specialized equipment, so the purchased material will be cut qualitatively. But it is not always possible to use this service, and it often happens that it is necessary to saw only one workpiece.

Cutting a board at home

Cutting a board at home is possible with such tools and equipment as:

Each of these options has its own specifics, which is important to consider before starting work, that is, you need to know how to saw a log or board with this or that tool so that the quality of the cut was acceptable.

Circular saw. high productivity and convenience

Circular saw is the best option for performing the work. It has an excellent performance and allows a relatively short time to cut a considerable number of workpieces, and with high quality. In addition, such a saw allows you to make a longitudinal cut of the material, but you need to know how to cut the board lengthwise evenly.

One of the most important criteria when choosing a circular saw is the maximum cutting depth. There are devices on the market that can saw materials 30 to 130 mm thick. That is, you can pick up a machine both for cutting only thin boards, and for sawing bars.

It is also worth paying attention to the cutting tool itself. Blades with more teeth give a clean cut but do not cut fast enough. But discs with a small number of teeth will provide a high productivity, but the quality of the cut will be worse.

Now about how to cut evenly with a circular saw. One of the conditions of high-quality performance of works is a reliable fixation of the workpiece. If the material is not anchored well, the sawing process can cause the board to “move” and the cut will be uneven.

board, evenly, hand, circular

If the circular saw is manual, then all work should be done on a workbench, equipped with stops and guides for the workpieces. Such a device can be self-made, using any table as a base.

Before you start sawing it is important to set the cutting depth correctly. Some manual saws have an adjustable side guide that can be used to make a longitudinal cut of the material. If you do not have such a device, use the same workbench.

convenient in terms of work is a table circular saw, which is already equipped with everything necessary. guides, locks. Often such equipment also allows you to make an angled cut of the workpiece.

In the process of sawing it is important not to exceed the force on the tool, otherwise the quality of the cut will be low, the increased load on the saw will lead to rapid blunting of the cutting disc.

Safety precautions should also be considered when using such equipment. Perform work only after checking the serviceability of the saw and the correct securing of the workpiece. Also do not neglect protective equipment. masks, goggles.

Hacksaw. simplicity and safety

A hacksaw is a simple tool that is quite suitable for carrying out the work. Although the speed of the cut is not high, and considerable physical effort is required, but for home conditions such a saw is the most acceptable option.

Properly sawing with a wood hacksaw is not difficult. The main condition for a quality cut of the material is to make a correct cut. To simplify the task, you can use an ordinary flat bar, which is used as a guide.

Often the question arises, how to evenly saw off a board with a hacksaw at an angle. To do this, a special joiner’s device is used. the pliers. And it will not only help to make a cut at the right angle, but also allow any beginner to cut a board evenly.

It is also possible to saw a log with a hacksaw. The only problem when working with such a workpiece comes down to the fact that you have to make a lot of effort.

The last option is to use an angle grinder with a set wheel with teeth. But since the “angle grinder” is not designed to cut wood, this method should be used only as a last resort, because attempts to cut the board can have serious consequences. It is better to use a hacksaw. it is time consuming, but safe.

First.

Pay attention to all log bends and convexities. a perfectly straight log is rare. So we try to turn it so as to get from it as little waste as possible, such as a slab. When the log is stacked and secured, it’s worth making sure that it can run freely between the guide rollers.

Set the size by diameter on the ruler of the sawmill, and add to this size the highest height of the log convexity. This is the bulge that is higher than the diameter of the top or the narrowest part of the log.

Using a standard tape measure, measure the height of the highest part, and from this size begin to count the size of the material needed, taking into account the size of the cut, which is from 2 to 5 mm.

Sawing boards: the choice of sawing method and types of equipment to be used

Very often when carrying out various works in construction, there is a need for such an operation as sawing wood into boards. In this overview we will tell you how you can organize the work process depending on the conditions and specifics of a particular operation, because sometimes you only need to saw a single element along the length, and sometimes you need to saw a whole log or beam.

At

What criteria to consider when choosing a sawing method

All of the options that we discuss below allow you to cope with the task, but each of them is suitable for certain conditions, so you need to decide in advance on several factors:

Scope of work Naturally, if you need to cut a single board, you can use the simplest devices, but if you have to process a certain volume, then the choice of method of work should be approached more responsibly, because if you decide incorrectly, you can spend more time and effort on cutting than on all other activities
Quality Sometimes this factor is unimportant, but sometimes the reliability of the construction and the attractiveness of the building depends on how accurately and qualitatively the cutting is done. It is therefore important to achieve the result which will be optimal for your object and at the same time to spend a minimum of money
Nature of treatment Naturally, the sawing of logs into boards will be different from the work on cutting boards and will require completely different equipment. The choice also depends on the thickness of the material to be sawed
Type of wood It is no secret that different types of wood have different hardness, and to saw the same pine is much easier than oak or beech, in addition, with increasing hardness much more power is required for the same work. Also don’t forget about the wear and tear of the equipment

Important! Sometimes the best solution may be to buy a ready-made board, especially if the amount of work is large.

A special machine for sawing boards longitudinally. an ideal solution for those who perform longitudinal cutting constantly and in large volumes

We will consider some options for carrying out works with their own hands and tell about the devices used, it is up to you to choose the solution that will be best for you in a particular situation.

Sawing a board

Such type of work as a longitudinal cutting of a board to size can be made in several ways:

  • If the volume of work is small, you can use a hand saw, but you need a special version for longitudinal sawing, which differs in the shape of the tooth. The instructions for the work are as follows: it is necessary with the help of an angle and a tape measure to conduct a thorough marking, then draw a clear line for the trimmer, then the element is carefully fastened, so that in the process of work the board does not move;

The greater the length of the board. the more difficult it is to carry out the process qualitatively

Important! In manual processing, pay special attention to the vertical position of the cutting blade, otherwise the edges will turn out nervous.

  • The second option is to use an electric wood jigsaw, but it is also suitable for small amounts of work, and the thickness of the board is limited, the marking process is similar to the above. The work is easier to perform, as there is no need to apply physical force and monitor the verticality of the cut. the sole in the equipment ensures compliance with the right angle;
  • Now let’s consider how to saw a board evenly along with a circular saw, there are two variants of work: if the element edges are uneven, the line for a trimmer, which is used for cutting (it is often done with unedged timber), if one edge is even, the stop is put at a certain distance, and you just drive the tool, pressing the stop part to the end;

When working, do everything according to the instruction manual of the power tool

  • Of course, the easiest solution to the question of how to saw a board lengthwise is a circular saw, and can be used as a full-fledged installation, and compact versions. This option is very well suited when cutting a large number of elements to one size, you can set a stop or attach it and not waste time on marking and fixing, in addition, this type of equipment has the highest productivity;

Having secured the stop, you can not worry about compliance with the parameters

Log sawing

A more complex variant of carrying out the work, which requires more powerful equipment. Of course, buying a full-fledged sawmill is not the best option, so sawing logs into boards in the field is done with a chainsaw and a special set Timberjig.

  • You will need a standard chainsaw, preferably its power is quite high;
  • It is also necessary to purchase a set consisting of a guide and a stop, it is sold with a set of required fasteners, so no additional elements are required;

The design is suitable for all standard chain saws

  • Next going to gather the device for sawing logs into boards, this is done first of all stop two boards, one end of which is attached to the middle of the other, you get a very strong T-shaped element, which will serve as a guide in the course of the work;
  • Logs are placed on an even base, then to its ends are screwed stops, which are made from a board connected by an angle, it is important to control their level and position evenly, the quality of the work depends on it;
  • Now you need to attach the guide to the stops, it is set along the line of the future cut, and you should take into account the fact that the bar of the chainsaw will run 10 mm above the upper edge of the guide. It is held in place with the help of the clamps that are also included;
  • On the frame the saw is placed, the frame allows it to occupy the same position during the whole work. For convenience, we recommend that you raise the log after fixing so that the chainsaw is at an angle, so you will be much more comfortable to work. The photo shows the design in operation.

What is the best way to cut?

Circular saw

It is the most convenient tool for sawing boards. Compared to some other power tools, it is more productive. But it is worth remembering that circular saws differ in characteristics and applications.

Before you buy a chainsaw, decide what you are going to use it for. The main use of circular saws is cutting or sawing boards.

When selecting the saw, the depth of the saw must be taken into account. Circular saws with cutting depths of 30 to 130 mm are available. It is necessary to know what thickness of board you will saw with and on this basis to give preference to this or that saw.

See also  How to insert a blade into a metal hacksaw

It is also worth choosing a circular saw blade responsibly. If you need to make a clean cut, a circular saw blade with a higher tooth frequency is the right choice. If the teeth are sparsely arranged on the disk, the work will be faster, but much rougher. It is important that when working with a circular saw the cuts are even and almost without splinters. Read more about this in my book. Read more about it in the “BOOKS” section.

To get started with your circular saw, set the kerf depth to the thickness of your board. That gives you the best possible cut on almost any surface and leaves no traces.

But remember if you make a 90 degree cut the depth of cut will be one, but for a 45 degree cut the depth of cut will be much deeper. Then check that nothing obstructs the protective hood, otherwise it simply will not open.

Fix the board, it is necessary that in the process of work it does not slip on the table, this requires a stop along and at the end of the workpiece. By the way, some saws are equipped with a thumb screw that allows you to set the angle of cut. Circular saws typically have a range of 90 to just under 45 degrees, which allows you to make neat angled cuts.

Don’t forget about safety when working with a circular saw. Always wear safety glasses or, better yet, a face shield over your whole face. Remember that almost all tools are designed for right handed people, it means that all sawdust and other debris will fly out from under the saw from the left side, so left handed people should be more concerned about the safety of eyes and respiratory tract.

Angle grinder or angle grinder

Some masters advise to use an angle grinder, if you have a large amount of work, low quality requirements.

Do not try this method under any circumstances. angle grinder is designed to give a beautiful look welding seam or for cutting bricks and without a saw you just can not cope. Cutting boards with an angle grinder is dangerous.

When cutting boards with this tool, masters advise to put a disk with jagged edges for a circular saw on it. Imagine that while working angle grinder caught a piece of wood in one of the jagged edges, you immediately release the power button (those who worked with it know that after turning off the drive will make a few more revolutions), and no one knows where you find your tool after that, on the floor a couple of meters away or in your body.

Or, for example, the disk heated and broke, which is also quite possible, pieces of hot cutting wheel scattered over the entire area, and some of them can land on you and. Other craftsmen use a disc with pobedite tips, which can also easily end up in your foot.

Therefore, it is better not to risk, and to use a tool specially adapted for this work.

Hacksaw

In order to make an even cut with a hacksaw, first you need to draw a line for the saw trimmer with a pencil on the board, then, set the workpiece so that it was convenient for you to work with it, fix it in this position. The next step is to set the hacksaw in a position about 60 degrees to the workpiece, guide the saw with your thumb so that it runs straight along the cutting line.

Start sawing as soon as your notch will be such depth that the saw can “walk” in it quietly without losing the mark, you can turn it in a comfortable position for you, usually 90 degrees, and continue sawing until you achieve the desired result. If the wood is wet and soft, then the teeth of the hacksaw will get stuck in it, which will make the work more tedious and longer.

In order to facilitate your work, lubricate the tool with soap and water, which will greatly facilitate your work. The first cuts of a beginner do not turn out very straight, so it is better to use a bar, which will serve you as a guide.

If you need to make an angled cut, use a mitre saw. Slots for the hacksaw are already made in the jigsaw. Simply attach it to the workbench, put the part in the guide slot and saw at the right angle. The cut will be straight, with almost no splinters.

In order to beautifully saw the boards it is better to use the help of a qualified master, if you think that you are able to cope with this work, then on no account do not make cuts angular grinder, it is better to use a hacksaw. For accurate cuts along the board, the best tool is a circular or circular saw.

An important point in sawing boards is accuracy and precision, it is a painstaking and time-consuming work. The main thing is never to forget that any manual, and especially the power tool can cause you harm, never ignore the rules of safety, it is better to reinsure, because health is the most important thing.

How to make a trimmer from a manual circular saw at home

Hello dear readers and subscribers of Andrew Noack’s blog. In this article I will tell you how to make a guide bar for your home purposes from a manual circular saw, while spending a minimum of money to make. A circular saw is a good helper in your household, with which you can do “very big things”!

To focus on the term “circular saw” I think it is inappropriate, because everyone has firsthand knowledge of what this device is, and there are enough thematic materials in my blog. I will try to tell you what a crosscut saw (crosscutting saw) is and give you as much useful information as possible for your illustrative purposes.

A pendulum-type mitre saw is of the following design. The base of every machine is the base frame. It is also fitted with a table that, in turn, is mounted on a pivoting mechanism with a ruler. This device permits the setting and adjustment of the cutting angle.

Cutting angle can be adjusted by moving the table relative to the bed plane. The saw element is secured by a lever and spring-loaded by a hinge. The pendulum is used to move the saw vertically.

As for the variant of the combined model, the cutting angle can be changed if necessary in two directions. Same structure as the pendulum saw, but with an additional pivot point. As for changing the angle of cut in the horizontal plane, it can be changed in the horizontal direction, which in turn is opposite to the mounted drive.

The broach saw makes it possible to move the cutting element both around the axis of the pivoting mechanism and in the forward direction along the kerf. This is achieved by installing guides (on the photo below).

For convenience, the operators use a special device for trimming at the mitre saw, which is called a compound mitre. Uncomplicated design, consisting of a tray for boards, clamping sheet of plywood or other material, clamping elements (clamping screws, etc.), etc.). How does this device work?? I will try to answer this trivial question simply and clearly.

The board is placed in the tray and pressed by the sheet Wood chipboard. Clamped with a clamp and a hand saw, circular saw, angle grinder is made by cutting blanks through the special side slots. Often the saw blade is used to perform sawing of the material at an angle of 45-90 degrees in home workshops on circular saws. With this device it is possible to quickly cut the board into pallets or boards.

After all the information, you have an idea of what a mitre saw is and what it is for. Next, I will tell you how to make with improvised materials with my own hands a facing tool from a hand circular saw.

The base of the construction is a box made of chipboard. It has a “U” shape. Knocked down and fastened with screws. To prevent displacement of the shelf, clamps to the work table (workbench).

The saw base is screwed onto the shelf from above. The fastening is also done with screws. Keep the planes perpendicular, because the saw sole will be level at the edge.

The sawing base is aligned along the edge. This will prevent slipping and wiggling. On the sides we screw in the chipboard strips with self-tapping screws. In this way, the positioning of the sole is achieved.

The saw is secured with clamps and clamps. It is possible to make wing clamps. Here is such a device for trimming on the circular saw in this variant turned out. They call this device “the foreman”.

Next to the base, we fix the “table” base to the table. The only disadvantage is the reduced cutting depth by 15 mm. That’s why you have to place the profile as close as possible to the saw blade.

After a test cut we get a line for the trimmer cut on the base of the stop. Thus, it was possible to construct with my own hands a trimmer from a circular saw. Such design of the device copes with the task by all means. If you still do not succeed in constructing this type of equipment, or simply have no time to do it, you can use the services of a circular saw with trimmer at affordable in specialized workshops.

Another good tool for working with wood is the circular saw. What is it?? It can be divided into two types. manual and in the form of a full-fledged rismus machine. As a rule, the manual version is only needed to transfer data from the drawing to the actual material and workpieces.

You will have a lot of rafters that can be cut into 44 cm wide bars

Before you start sawing the bars, you should always check the angle of 90 degrees. It is recommended to do this all the time, time after time, when you start work, and in general it is worth keeping the angle piece handy at all times. Also look at the small drawing, so that it is clearer on which side you should cut the workpiece.

After drying the wood can not be perfectly flat, and usually everything changes in shape and becomes like a crescent, namely on one side two edges are bent outward (we are talking about the side “A”), and on the other side will bend outward the middle (side “B”).

When you make the first cut on the circular saw it is necessary to press the workpiece with the first side against the clamp, and then the workpiece will not “float” and the back side “B” will run in a straight line on the circular saw’s disc. As a result, you get a perfectly straight line for the trimmer on the second side. If you press the workpiece together with the “B” side, then on the first side you are likely to get the same crescent, because the workpiece will not be pressed by the edges against the clamp, they will “float”.
