Cutting Glass Tubes. Cutting glass tubes of various diameters How to cut a glass tube at home

Hello, dear readers! Glass bottles decor, quite popular in recent times, by the way, we have already considered this topic in a review “”, and since many are interested in the question how to cut the glass bottle at home, without the use of glass cutters, then today’s master class I want to devote a simple but interesting way to cut the bottle thread.

In this regard, the topic of this master class “How to cut a bottle with a thread. nothing complicated!”.

  • Glass bottle;
  • Woolen thread;
  • Solvent (you can use kerosene, alcohol, cologne, acetone);
  • Scissors or a stationery knife;
  • Gloves (will protect the skin of the hands from the effects of the solvent);
  • Lighter or matches;
  • To protect your eyes just in case there are no splinters (in fact there are no splinters, but you can’t be too careful);
  • A deep basin filled with cold water.

So, how to cut the bottle with the thread? We take a woolen thread, measure and cut it so it would be enough for 3-4 turns of the bottle.

We dip the measured and cut thread in the solvent, and immediately wrap the bottle, in the place where it is planned to make the “cut”. The thread can be simply wrapped or tied with a knot, in this master class I made simply wrapping.

After that, this thread will ignite with matches or a lighter, and it is better to keep the bottle in an inclined position. strictly horizontal (parallel to the ground), gently twisting it around its axis.

The fire will burn for about 30-40 seconds, as soon as the lit thread goes out. quickly lower the bottle into the prepared basin filled with cold water.

Next, the characteristic sound of cracked glass will be heard and the bottle will instantly split into two parts. This type of glass cutting is based on a rapid change in temperature, we all know from the lessons of physics, that when heated, the glass is expanding, and when it cools shrinks, respectively, with a sharp change in temperature is a kind of destruction of the glass and it just cracks!

Cutting glass tubes, sticks, bottles, billets and flat glass. one of the most common operations in laboratory or glassblowing. It precedes all glassblowing operations in most cases. Only properly cut glass tubes are suitable for further processing (welding the tubes, melting the tube ends, soldering the spurs, etc.).). The end of a properly cut tube should be strictly perpendicular to its length, without nicks or fibers, as well as short cracks located at a slight angle to the place of the cut. Different cutting methods are used depending on the diameter of the tube or workpiece.

Cutting the tube to a breaking point. This method is used to cut the tubes with diameter of 20-23 mm and glass sticks. The glass tube is placed on the table edge and the left hand holds the protruding part of the tube. In the simplest case, simply clamp the tube in your left hand. In the right hand they take a carbide knife (cutter) or a sharp file with a fine notch. Having placed the cutter or file on the tube in the marked place, strictly perpendicular to the length, with the left hand rotate the tube towards themselves by about a quarter of the diameter (fig. 27, а). You may moisten the tube with water or soapy water to decrease surface tension at the cut point.

The cut can also be made by another method. With the right hand (the tube is clamped in the left hand) place the knife on the tube and with a slight pressure from yourself downwards make the notch, then push the knife back upwards without taking it away from the tube and again down towards yourself. This creates an even incision equal to a quarter of the tube diameter. The cut can be made in a different manner by placing one end of the tube on the right knee and pressing the other end with the left hand against the left leg.

Glassblowers often use the following technique to make a mark. Firmly grasp the glass tube to be cut with your left hand, holding it between your thumb and forefinger. You hold the cutter or file in your right hand (Fig. 27, б). The pad of the right thumb should rest on the sharp edge of the file. Then clamp the tube firmly between the sharp edge of the file and the thumb and make a slight turn: with the right hand. on itself, and with the left. from yourself, making a slit in the surface of the tube.

For those who have just begun to learn how to cut glass, use this method with care because the tube, especially a thin-walled one, can break and hurt your hand. After marking, the tube is taken in both hands with the mark upwards, so that the mark is at the same distance from the right and left hands, and smoothly, stretching in different directions, the tube is broken (Fig. 27, в). If the tube does not break, make a repeated one on the old mark with one of these methods and break again. To reduce surface tension, the mark-slit is wet with water. The tube thus breaks more easily. While students acquire a certain skill in cutting tubes, this operation should be carried out with hands wrapped in a towel or rag to avoid cuts. When cutting glass sticks break with a sharp movement, so that no burrs are formed at the ends.

Can I cut Plexiglas with an angle grinder??

Thanks to the angle grinder you can effortlessly cut plexiglass. For this operation, an ordinary ceramic wheel will be quite enough.

It is necessary to make a contour cut, and then deepen it. It will be necessary to move the cut glass to the edge of the table and break it. Remember that you must be very careful when cutting this material so as not to damage it.

Cutting glass tubes of different diameters

When it is necessary to cut such a product as a glass tube, proceed as follows.

At the place of the desired separation the tube is ground with a file. If the diameter of the tube is larger than 1 cm, you must first make a cut across the entire surface, that is, form an even ring. On glass tubes of smaller diameter it is enough to make a linear cut. But to get a smoother cut edge, it is also desirable to mill the tube around. Break the processed tube with care, it is better to wear gloves on your hands.

When working with a circular saw it is necessary to additionally use special tools to install and secure the pipe. over, it is advisable to carry out such work with two people. Depending on the diameter 2 or 4 passes are required. Important conditions:

  • Quality sharpening of the saw;
  • the tube should lie completely on the work surface to avoid cracking at the end of the work. It should be held by hand or with special clamps during the work;
  • one end of the pipe is placed under the stop, so that when you turn the pipe the saw trimmer line will not move sideways;
  • turn the tube is carried out carefully, without jerking;
  • at the end of the cut (when the disc reaches the opposite wall) the feed rate should be gradually reduced to a minimum.

How to make a vodnik for smoking

One of the simplest devices for smoking a stoff is the vodnik. In addition to the fact that it is very easy to make, it is even easier to get the materials for the construction, namely:

  • A plastic bottle of more than one and a half liters in volume with a screw cap;
  • Another bottle that is larger and higher in volume than the first bottle;
  • Foil (or a special thimble);
  • knife.

Such an uncomplicated list is enough. Cheap and affordable.

The manufacturing process does not take much time. First, you need to cut off the bottom of the container, which is smaller. In a larger bottle, cut off the top part (1/3 of the container).

The next step is to organize the stoff bowl, which is provided in the neck of the bottle. An ordinary plastic lid with foil can act as a bowl. The final stage. making holes in the foil. The water bottle waternik is ready!

But there is a simpler and safer option. a special filling, with a diameter of the bottle neck. For example “Fingerhut”, offered on the DuDa website, is of good quality and affordable price. Handmade from metal, so this thimble will not burn, and wash it easily. And no more fiddling with piercing holes and wasting precious time!

In the online store DuDa you can find a wide range of reliable asses from the best Ukrainian craftsmen.

Master class: how to cut the bottle with a thread. nothing complicated!

Hello, dear readers! The decoration from glass bottles, quite popular in recent times, by the way, we have already considered this topic in the review “Bottles in the interior: here they have found a use!”, and since many are interested in the question of how to cut a glass bottle at home, without the use of glass cutters, then today’s master class I want to devote a simple but interesting way to cut a bottle with a thread.

In this regard, the theme of this master class “How to Cut a Bottle with Thread. Nothing Difficult!”.

So, how to cut the bottle with thread? We take a woolen thread, measure and cut it so that it was enough for 3-4 turns of the bottle.

We dip the measured and cut thread in the solvent, and immediately wrap the bottle in the place where you want to make a “cut”. The thread can be simply wrapped or tied with a knot, in this master class I made a simple wrapping.

After that this thread is lit with matches or a lighter, and it is better to keep the bottle in a tilted position. strictly horizontal (parallel to the ground), gently scrolling around the axis.

This type of glass cutting is based on a rapid change of temperature, we all know from the lessons of physics, that the heating expands the glass, and the cooling narrows, respectively, with a sharp change in temperature is a kind of destruction of the glass and it simply cracks!

We found out how to cut the bottle with a thread, but how to process the sharp edges of glass? You can use sandpaper or a knife-sharpening stone. Last, you should process the bottle edges, previously immersed in water, so the processing is easier and faster (better protect your hands with rubber gloves). Friends, please do not forget about the proverbial safety precautions, as no matter how you work with fire and glass, safety glasses for the eyes, gloves on hands and a basin with plenty of water. are mandatory!

Glass treatment at home

Many people cautiously refer to work with glass and limit themselves to simple operations like repairing a broken window. But after all, glass is a wonderful material, and not all craftsmen know that at home it can be processed no worse than in manufacturing. Oleg Abramov shares his secrets.

The molecular structure of glass allows it to cut, saw, drill, grind, glue, engrave, bend, and even pull into threads!

You need a glass cutter to cut glass. often they use roller glass cutters.

A. Glass cutters with this handle were produced about forty years ago. Their advantage is the heavy head, which is convenient for tapping the fishing line to trim the cut.

B and C are cheap Chinese glass cutters. Sold under the Jobo, Kraftool, Stayer brands. They are difficult to use for cutting glass because of the low quality of the rollers and the glass cutter head. Kraftool shows very well the damaged head teeth after breaking off the glass.

D. the Silberschnitt professional roller glass cutter. My favorite model. Versatile and reliable tools.

Touo TS-17 professional oil glass cutter good for curved cuts. If you need to cut glass regularly, you should not skimp on the glass cutter. Professional glass cutters may not be cheap, but it costs more to ruin glass. And the most expensive part in a professional glass cutter is the roller.

Rollers are made of stainless steel. They vary in angle of sharpening, usually 130-165 degrees. Rollers with 130-degree angle of grinding are used for cutting glass with thickness from 1 to 3 mm, and 140-150-degree angle rollers are used for cutting glass with thickness of 4-10 mm. Glasses over 10 mm thick are cut with a 155-165 degree wheel.

Glass is cut like this. The cutting table needs to be flat and stable. The surface is covered with a thin isolon, but ideally. a thin carpet or felt is glued to the table. It is more convenient to cut in this way, and the underside of the glass will not be scratched by splinters, which are inevitably formed when cutting. The glass is placed on the surface of the table, marked, and the ruler is pressed against it.

The glazier’s best friend. Ruler, kerosene and hammer

The ruler for cutting glass is a ruler with a thin strip of rubber glued to the bottom to prevent the ruler from shifting while cutting. Or it is a special ruler with suction cups embedded in it. You can also make this kind of fishing line yourself.

So, we draw the glass trimmer line with the glass cutter. Important! This trimmer line must not be interrupted and must not be repeated. It must be cut in one pass.

Then we move the glass from the table and gently tap with a small hammer the fishing line for the trimmer cut. here is another faithful friend of the glazier. Then we put the glass with the cutting line on the edge of the table and break it off by pressing it with a board with the help of clamps. Clamps are especially important if the glass is thick.

With some skill it is possible to stretch the cutting trimmer line with your fingers, especially if the glass is thin.

So we’ve learned how to cut straight lines. And the curves? To do this, first cut out a template instead of a ruler. for example, from thick linoleum. The rest of the operations are similar.

You can even cut a circle out of glass. For this you will need a circular glass cutter or a round template with a suitable diameter. If there is a compass, we fix a suction cup on the glass and draw a circle. Of course, without interrupting the cutting trimmer line.

Then we draw the rays from the circumference to the edges of the glass.

We turn the glass over and carefully press the trimmer line and the rays with the handle of the glass cutter. If everything is done correctly, the workpiece itself will disintegrate into a circle and side debris.

If you only have a pancake moulding at hand, you can fix it on the glass with double-sided tape to prevent it from shifting, and then run the cutting trimmer line around it in the same way.

Not only flat glass For example, you can cut bottles. They make interesting vases or lampshades. To do this, they usually assemble an improvised workbench from a base and three bars. The bottle is placed between the bars and rotated with the left hand while the glass cutter in the right hand guides the fishing line to trim the cut.

Then the line for the cutting trimmer is punched from the inside with a pin with a weighting material and the cut part is separated from the bottle.

If it is impossible to test a line for a trimmer cut from inside, it can be accurately heated with a portable gas burner. The main condition is that the bottle must have a smooth surface, preferably of a cylindrical shape. Complex shaped bottles, angular for example, are more difficult to cut.

We’ve learned how to cut, so now we need to trim the trimmer line. Those who work in stained glass use portable diamond Inland or Krištáli 2000 machines, with which even an uneven line for the cutting trimmer can be quickly trimmed.

If you need to blunt the edges of the window glass, you can use a diamond-coated sponge or a knife-sharpening grit, moistening it first.

Soldering glass tubes

To braze the glass tubes it is necessary to heat them well (until the glass softens and shows its flow properties).

Soldering of glass tubes

This is more complicated than simply cutting or bending the glass tubes. For soldering the tubes, beforehand, their respective ends must be slightly widened after heating to get a funnel shape. This can be done with a graphite rod. If you solder glass tubes of different diameters, then the end of one tube must be narrowed (this happens in the flame), the end of the other must be heated, then both are put on top of each other. Further heating of the joining area and blowing a little air into the tubes will even out the resulting seam.

When soldering glass tubes, you may get a hole in the tube, which can be soldered with the melted end of a glass rod without much. It should be remembered that if the deformation zone is not heated enough, when bending, stretching and soldering glass tubes, cracks appear when they cool down.

Sometimes you have to connect the two tubes not at the ends, but, for example, in the central part of it. This is not difficult to do. It is necessary to heat the tube at the place where you plan to get the hole. When the tube is hot enough you should close one end of the tube tightly, for example with a cork. We will blow into the second end. Blowing air into the area where the tube was heated will create a glass bubble with very thin walls. If you carefully pierce such a bubble with a glass rod, you will get a fairly even round hole.

Then we connect the heated end of the second tube to the opening of the first tube. When soldering the glass tubes together you need to blow air into the end of one or two tubes to equalize the solder zone.

Glass ball

How to blow a glass balloon?! To make a glass ball, we use a glass tube. Before you start, you need to melt one end of the tube (see method above for molten glass). Heat the tube strongly by placing it in an upright position, so that the liquid glass gradually flows down and accumulates at the melted end. Do not forget to rotate the tube, so that the walls are uniform in thickness and are well heated.

When there is enough glass at the bottom of the tube, remove the tube from the flame and, without stopping to rotate, start blowing air into it lightly.
