Cutting pipes at an angle: the advantages and disadvantages of different ways of doing things
Pipes are a common building material. They are used in the installation of different systems. In the process of installation there are situations when it is necessary to join pipes at an angle. Technology for such works is not standard, but you should know about it.
To create a complex configuration of the connection, pipe cutting at an angle is required. We will tell you how to perform these operations and what are the methods of cutting.
The usual perpendicular cutting under 90º
Some believe that it is not even necessary to make any markings, especially if you are holding a large angle grinder with a large cutting disc. However, afterwards, when aligning pipes cut without marking, problems can arise. In order to avoid them, you can use ordinary duct tape or masking tape, which is glued around the pipe. In this case, its edges at the start and end point should perfectly coincide. If everything is done correctly, after cutting the two pipes will fit together, forming a perfectly straight line, without unnecessary gaps.

Marking method using a container of water instead of a template
This method of marking is suitable for small-diameter pipes, which are planned to cut at a certain angle close to the edge. First you need to prepare a deep container of water. The planned angle of inclination is marked on it. Now you need to carefully immerse the end of the product in the liquid, bend it to the mark, and then pull it out.
As a result of such actions, a clear line for trimmer contact with water will appear on it, it should be highlighted. It is used to cut the pipe at an angle. This method is best suited for work where multiple markings are required.
What will be needed:
Wrap a sheet of paper around the pipe, piece the edges together and cut off the excess. As a result, there should be a scrap that wraps around the tube with an even junction along the transverse line.
In this case it is 60 mm. The prepared sheet is folded in half, and a cross line for the trimmer is drawn on it at a distance from the edge equal to the diameter of the pipe, i.e. 60 mm.
The marked area is divided into 3 parts by two longitudinal lines. They are indented on the sides at a distance of the radius of the pipe, that is, 30 mm.
Then it is necessary to inscribe a semicircle in the lateral rectangles, for this purpose the end of the pipe is put to them and circled. Then you need to run the trimmer line under the ruler, as in the photo.
The result is a template. It should be wrapped around the pipe and circled. If it is then cut along this line, then joining the edges of the blanks, we get a perfect 90° elbow.
Using a container with water
What to do if we are dealing with a pipe of small diameter, and we need to cut the pipe at an angle somewhere near the edge? A deep container full of water will be helpful. Before you start work, you need to calculate the angle of inclination and make a mark on the vessel. Then all we need to do is to gently lower the edge of the pipe into the water and bend it to the mark on the vessel. We take out the pipe, mark the line for the trimmer in contact with water, and safely cut along the marking. This method is optimal when marking a huge number of pipes. A template made from a container of water will speed up our work.
Marking with a piece of paper
One of the easiest methods is to mark the angle with a piece of paper. Fold the square piece of paper strictly along the diagonal. Take the pipe and wrap it around the folded sheet so that the edges of the diagonals are opposite each other. So, on the smaller side of the sheet we have a 45 degree angle. Use any measuring tool to mark the place of the future cut in the sheet. To avoid accidental erasure of the markings, you can use a narrow adhesive tape. This method of marking is convenient for a long pipe of large diameter, and the place of the cut is somewhere in the middle.
How to cut a pipe at an angle

Considering the methods of work. cutting straight or at an angle. you should take into account the different material of the products to be processed. Hoses made of polypropylene or thin copper are easier and quicker to cut than thicker walled steel pipes.
Plastic products of small diameters are cut at the desired angle with special scissors. In this case you can control the angle with an ordinary protractor. Polymer pipes can also be cut with an ordinary fine-toothed hacksaw.
In the process of installation, metal pipes often need to be cut. A popular tool for such cases is the so-called angle grinder. This tool is used to cut straight and at an angle.
Let’s find out what devices can be used for cutting at different angles.
To perform a relatively accurate cut, you can apply a simple technique, where an ordinary sheet of paper acts as a kind of template. For example, printer’s paper of A4 format is well suited for creating a template.
The sheet is preliminarily marked under the square using a ruler. The size of the diagonal of the square must be equal to the length of the circumference of the pipe to be cut. Cut off unnecessary parts of the sheet.
- Fold the sheet diagonally, aligning the opposite corners;
- Turn the resulting triangle so that the line for the hypotenuse trimmer is perpendicular to the axis of the pipe;
- In this position, wrap the paper around the pipe surface, aligning together the hypotenuse extreme points;
- Mark the cut marker along the line of any of the triangle’s cathetuses with a marker;
- Cut the pipe on the marked line.
It is quite convenient to mark and cut the pipe at a 45º angle in the diameter range from 32 to 63 mm with this method. For greater convenience of marking it is recommended to take a thick, but soft paper. You can also use paronite and similar materials.
Correctly made templates for pipe shape cutting allow making cuts with very high precision. In this case, the gap between the prepared blanks is not excluded. In the connection of metal pipes it is “closed” by a welded seam, in the connection of plastic parts a specialized cord for soldering is used.
The technology of cutting according to the templates allows to get different angles of cut. But in order to form a template for angles other than 45º it is necessary to perform mathematical calculations and according to the calculated data to cut a template from paper or similar materials.
It is true that there are computer programs designed to save the master from making calculations. Patterns for cutting pipes such programs print on the printer.
A simple calculation program based on MS Excel makes it possible to calculate and form a template for practically all pipe diameters and cutting angles.
All the user has to do is to enter the appropriate values in the “Outer diameter” and “Cut angle” boxes. According to these parameters the mold will be formed and may be sent for printing.
Please note! Calculation of the curve points is based on only two parameters given. the pipe diameter and the required angle of cut. A disadvantage of the program is that it does not take into account the thickness of the template sheet, which leads to minor inaccuracies
There is an uncomplicated tool, often used in the home, mostly for work with wood. It’s called a plier. So, the same tool is suitable for cutting pipes, and at different angles.
The chisel is available for sale, but if you want, you can always make it with your own hands and adjust the design to the desired diameter of the pipe:
- Take a wooden board of width equal to the diameter of the pipe, length 400-500 mm;
- Take two more planks with the same dimensions but increased in width by the thickness of the first board;
- From the three boards to assemble a structure in the form of an inverted letter “U”, where as the base is set the first board;
- In the central part of the structure to mark a rectangle, two sides of which run along the inner boundaries of the side boards;
- Divide the rectangle by diagonals and along the lines obtained on the upper faces of the side boards, make cuts down to the base.
This is how to make a template for cutting at a 45º angle. But using a protractor it is possible to mark almost any angle and make cuts under the pipe cut for a particular angle.
How to cut a pipe at a 45 degree angle
Cutting pipe at an angle. A typical task in the manufacture of steel structures. Often there is a need to cut pipe at an angle. The cut pipes are welded at a given angle to the walls of the structure, and two-link elbows are made from them.
Before trimming, with the help of templates (templates), put on the pipe, mark the line for the trimmer of the cut. For every diameter and every angle of the selected diameter a separate unique template is necessary. Offered Excel table allows to get dimensions for pattern creation for marking pipes of any diameter and cut at any angles. Enter the outside diameter of the pipe, the cutting angle, and the length of the segment into the yellow cells of the table, and you will instantly get the ordinates and abscissa of these points.
Transfer these points to the paronite or cardboard and connect them smoothly. The pattern (template) is ready. For convenient manual drawing the user enters the segment length on X axis (multiple of 5, 10 mm) and obtains up to 40 drawing points depending on the segment length and template length. You should get a curve like this.
Using a table with macros eliminates the need for manual drawing. The program will draw the trace itself, based on the data you have entered. You only have to print it out and cut it. The user adds the allowance on the printout.
When fabricating an elbow, the cutting angle should be half the angle of the elbow.
Example of determining the cutting angle for making an elbow with an angle of 135 degrees (9045). Not to be confused with a sharp knee of 45 degrees! Formula: 135/2=67,5. We cut the pipe at an angle of 67.5 degrees, we get two pieces of pipe with angles of 67.5 degrees, connect them to the cutting line with a binding to the general formative, we weld and we get an elbow (67.567,5) in 135 degrees.
In the process I made the following observation. When working with large diameters the manufactured template was obviously shorter when wrapped around the tube, it did not cover the whole tube, the gap of 20-30 mm remained.
The standard diameter of the pipe was correct and the template was shorter. In my opinion, this error is caused by the fact that it is impossible to press the mold tightly against the pipe and the outer diameter of the pipe has increased (rust, dirt). Had to “belt” measure the circumference and divide by π (3,1416). Enter the obtained diameter in the table.
