How and what to cut tiles (tile, ceramic) in the home with or without the tile cutter. we explain thoroughly
In the production of various construction works by yourself there is often a need to cut ceramic tiles at home. For this purpose it is not necessary to have a professional tool. a tile cutter.
Immediately we should mention: It’s not about constant work and large volumes, but about small batches or in general.
How to cut tiles without a tile cutter
In the production of various construction works by yourself there is often a need to cut ceramic tiles at home. It is not necessary to have a professional tool. a tile cutter. Let’s say right away: We are not talking about constant work and large volumes, but about small batches or even single pieces. In such cases, it does not make sense to buy an expensive tool, it is quite possible to do with improvised means.
- Cutting in a straight line. At the same time it is necessary to distinguish where the cut is made. If there is less than 2 cm to the edge from the cutting line, then this cut can be considered a shaped cut;
- Round holes in tiles of different diameters;
- Shaped cuts;
- Mosaic elements. If there are requirements for precise geometric shapes, this type also refers to shaped cutouts. Otherwise, it is actually breaking the tiles into pieces. Products are placed in a bag and with the help of a heavy tool (hammer, sledgehammer) are crushed to the desired proportions. The exception may be non-ceramic tiles.
Alternative tools and their features
Let’s have a look at the most popular methods of cutting ceramic or porcelain tiles of applicable properties. These include:
- Angle grinder with a huge disc. There are a number of types of these tools that can be used for cutting ceramic. Buy a suitable diamond disc for that. There are several varieties available, depending on the coarseness of the grain and the purity of the cut.
- electronic jigsaw. This is a successful and very handy tool, with which you can make an unstained cut, but to do this, buy a special rathole for tiles. Its advantages. versatility, in other words it is possible to make curvilinear cuts with a huge radius.
- Glass cutter of manual type. Suitable for cutting smooth glazed tiles.
- Drilling holes with a drill. This is a successful method, but in order to get a high quality end after cutting it is necessary to pass in place additional grinding tools, for example, rathfile and sandpaper.
Occasionally you have to make crooked swaths. Line for the mowing trimmer can be not only straight, but also semicircular. Such tears are more problematic if they don’t start from an edge. In such cases, you will have to first make a hole and then break out of it later.
For shaped tears, it is recommended (if it can be) to use the deepest risk by any method over the entire edge of the tear. This will reduce the number of possible chips.
There is a special tool for breaking out. pliers with a wheel. But it is not reasonable to get a special tool for one-time work. That’s why it’s possible to get by with ordinary pliers.
The development of hacking is very ordinary. Pliers (or pliers) are very compressed, the material is crumbled or squeezed and flipped sharply (only far from the cutting edge of the break, more than 5 mm). Small pieces break off. If you try to break off a big piece at once, you can ruin the whole job. The piece can break off behind the risk line.
Long, straight and narrow pieces all over the tile are broken off by a sharp twist of the pliers to the side. Beforehand they are clamped on the mowing strip, risk (scratching, of course, should be). With all that, the tile may not break off over the entire length, and the rest of the function must be repeated. Then also carefully break the remaining sharp edges.
The most common method. Taking a risk and getting into a sharp corner. This way you can prepare most of the pieces quickly and easily.
Sawing is used if you do not want to cut off a piece along its full length. With all this, several sides are cut, and one is broken off on a solid rod or through the clamps.
Sharpening: glass cutter and other tools
To cut a narrow (three mm wide) clay tile without using a tile cutter, tools with a sharpened cutting edge are also used. Glass cutters, drills, knives and other devices.
For marking with these tools the ruler is used, and a scratch is put on the upper layer of the tile. It is recommended to make the cut on yourself, without interruption. It is necessary to control the force of the pressure on the tool, so as not to destroy it and the material. After making the cut, break the tile against the edge of the table.
The cutters are used for making curved incisions in the clay tile. First of all, it is recommended to mark the outer side of the material with a marker. Then from the edge of the tile you need to start biting off small pieces of material, squeezing the cutters. As necessary, with the help of rathole and sandpaper, you need to make the edges of the tile smoother.

How to cut a tile
Experts say that it is most convenient to cut tiles with a tile cutter, because the tool is designed specifically for this purpose. To get a straight cut on the tile before the line for the trimmer cut with a pencil or marker. The tile is placed on the base of the tile cutter, aligning the wheel and the trimmer’s line. Then you need to lift the handle until the wheel touches the tile, and then move it toward you with a little effort. You only need to make one pass with the wheel to get a high-quality cut.
After the tile is cut, you need to divide it into two pieces. For this purpose, “wings” are installed in the area of the lower third of the tile, which can be sealed with tape, so that they do not leave traces. Now you can tap the handle a little with the palm of your hand or apply more force if the tile didn’t crack on the first try.
If, during facing, the cut is covered by another tile, it is not necessary to grind the edge. But for laying in the inner corner, you need an even edge. To sharpen the kerf use a special grinding stone (chosen depending on the type of tile) or emery cloth.
Using an electric tile cutter
An expensive professional tool that cuts through any tile equally quickly, smoothly, and accurately. Cutting straight and 45-degree angles, drilling holes and cavities, and shaped cuts are all available. Cut strips are less than 5 millimeters wide. The edges of the cut are smooth, slightly rounded.
Some models work with a tile dipped in water, others require only regular wetting of the cut. This method prevents the formation of dust.
The tool consists of a base, a knife and an electric motor, and the cutting process is as follows:
- The tray is filled with water at the level of the cutting disc, so that it is lowered into it by 2-3 centimeters (for submersible models).
- The tile is clamped and slowly moved under the cutter according to the marking. The force must be steady, to avoid chipping or the motor jamming.
- To cut an angle, repeat the procedure twice in sections with the desired angle.
Like any similar tool, an electric tile cutter requires safety and protective equipment.
For quality work, you need to change the worn discs and water in time.
Cutting with an angle grinder
Angle grinder is so versatile power tool that it is difficult to imagine the repair of the room without it. Tiles can also be cut with an angle grinder. To do this you will need to have a diamond disc in your arsenal. You can also use a circle on the stone.
You need to mark the cut on the tile with a nail or awl. It is better to do it from two sides: on the face of the tile, on the glaze, and on the inside of the surface. It is better to make the cut itself in several stages. At first, with an indentation of 2. 3 mm to go through on one side, and then also with the other. And continue to do so until the tile splits in two. With this approach, the risk of splitting the tile is minimized.
Experienced craftsmen can use the angle grinder to make a curved tile cut, and even round holes.
Drill with attachments
Strictly speaking, the drill is not suitable for cutting the strip. Drill and various attachments will cope with drilling holes of different diameters in the tiles.
Holes of small diameter under dowels are made for fastening shelves, cabinets, decorative elements. Large holes are needed to bypass pipes, counters, etc.
To work with ceramics, it is better not to use an ordinary drill bit, but a lance-shaped tile drill bit, commonly referred to as a “feather. It is easy to pass the glaze layer and the top layer of ceramic, and digs into it so that it passes the tile without chipping on the surface.
When you have passed the ceramic, replace the “feather” with a concrete drill bit and continue working.
Diamond tipped drills are excellent tools for drilling holes for outlets, switches, meters.
How to make a rounding
Occasionally tiles are prepared for laying around pipes or plumbing. Then the question arises. How to figuratively cut tiles without a tile cutter.
Processing is carried out by several methods:
How to get by with only pliers? For this purpose, a trimmer line is drawn. Make the task easier by scraping it with a nail. Then take the tool and begin to break off unnecessary material into small pieces. The carbide pliers do it best.
Awkward areas and shaped cuts are made with pliers.
As for the drill, then here with ordinary drills outline the contour, and later with the same pliers break off the excess. A more effective method of making holes of any cross-section. Use special attachments: feather, dancer, crown, etc. Д.
Particular attention should be paid to safety when working with the “angle grinder
If it is required at home to make holes and semicircular cut lines, use a drill with special attachments, wire cutters with carbide clips.
To make holes in the tiles use a special nozzle on the drill
The peculiarity of work with pliers is “biting off” fragments of ceramics on a pre-drawn contour. Remember that it is necessary to separate only small pieces. In any case, it is important to grind after such procedures.
