Cutting glass with a diamond wheel
Cutting with diamond and metal discs. Large workpieces, cylinders, bottles and large-diameter pipes are cut well with diamond or metal discs using abrasive materials.
A metal disc with a copper cage with diamond crystals pressed into it is put on the glass cutter (or the lapping machine’s spindle). a pipe is installed over the disc and connected to the water supply in such a way that the water flows to the place where the glass is cut with the disc. Under the disk is placed a cuvette with a drainage pipe for water and abrasive. Turn on the cutter, spinning the disc at 4000 rpm. The part to be cut is pressed weakly against the disk and carefully rotated so that a slot is formed on it, which does not reach the inner wall of the tube, cylinder or bottle.
evenly rotate the kerf until the two halves of the workpiece come apart. Tubes and small-diameter workpieces are cut directly into two parts without rotating the workpiece. To avoid breakage of the disc or workpiece, do not apply too much pressure on the disc.
Instead of a diamond disc (80-120 mm in diameter and less than 0.5 mm thick) you can use a corundum disc with a diameter of 80-120 mm and a thickness of 1.5-2.0 mm. Glass tubes, cylinders, bottles and other items can also be cut with a brass or iron disk with thickness of 1-1,5 mm and diameter of 100-150 mm using abrasive suspension The metal disk is put on the lapping machine spindle. A funnel is placed on the support stand with a rubber tube as a clamp on the end of it. A mushy suspension of abrasive (abrasive 12, 10 for thick-walled tubes or micro-abrasive powder M-14, M-20 for thin-walled) is poured into the funnel. A rubber tube is installed so that the abrasive slurry drips onto the metal disc, which rotates counterclockwise. The tube or workpiece is taken with both hands, carefully brought to the rotating disc and a circular cut is made with even rotation, not reaching the inner wall. Repeat the revolution until the notch is deepened in a circular motion until the two parts of the workpiece separate.
Cutting with a metal disc can also be done in another way. The part or the workpiece is rotated by making dotted cuts on the circumference of the workpiece with the disc, leaving an uncut part between them that is 5 to 6 mm in size. After the appropriate number of cuts are made on the workpiece, cut the uncut gaps and separate the ends, which are then ground on the grinding machine’s faceplate.
To work such a fragile material as glass, a special cutting tool is required. Of course, glass cutters greatly simplify the process of cutting, but to cope with their work, you can also use other improvised objects. If you need to cut glass and you don’t have a cutter handy, we can tell you how to replace it.
How to cut
If you know how to cut glass, then these skills will certainly be useful when cutting tiles or ceramic tiles, because these processes are essentially the same.
They differ only in the way in which the marking is made and the effort to be applied when breaking.
Cutting tiles is not difficult, but it will take some time to, as they say, “get the hang of it”. You can use unnecessary pieces of tile to work out or get accustomed to the effort required for a particular material. Do not neglect the “little tricks” that every experienced craftsman has in stock. In steps, the cutting process looks like this:
- Prepare the work table. It must have a smooth and hard surface.
- Lay the tile on the table face up. Using a ruler, apply the trimmer line to the cut with a marker. (Use a water-based marker, then it will come off easily with water).
- Along the line you have drawn, use a ruler to guide the tile from the far edge towards yourself with the glass cutter. Use a metal ruler as a guide and try to distribute the force equally as you press down on the cutting tool. The cut is ready!
- Place a block of wood under the tile (along the cut line) and press on both sides. The tile can easily split in two halves at the cut point.
- Look along the end of the cut line. If you can see any large chips, sand the edges of the tiles with medium or coarse sandpaper. This will give the pieces a finished look.
It’s worth clarifying some important points:
- Do not cut the tile material beforehand, but do it during the laying process. With this option will get a minimum amount of rejected tile material, as in advance to accurately calculate the distance between the tiles few manage.
- Try to apply equal pressure to the handle of the glass cutter in the process of cutting. Remember that if you press down hard, the surface of the tile will get covered with small cracks. And if you don’t give it enough. the line for the trimmer will break with chips or it will break not in line at all.
- It is best not to use a glass cutter if you need to make a cut of less than 1 cm. A short piece of tile may break off unevenly in the process of cutting and ruin the tile as a whole.
- And now about the “little trick”. Experienced tilers advise to soak a tile for 3-4 hours in plain water before cutting it. After such “water procedures” the tile material becomes more plastic, and it allows you to make a quality cut.
Features of glass cutting technology
Before you perform the work on cutting the glass you need to spend a proper preparation of the material. The glass must be washed from dust and carefully wiped with a dry rag. Debris in the path of the cutting tool can change the cutting angle, which not only leads to rejects, but can also damage the tool. The most invisible glass chips and shards can be debris. Even ordinary dust can make a big difference in the quality of the cut.
The flat surface you want to cut should be level and without slopes. In addition to the glass cutter you need a marker and a thick ruler for marking the cut line.
No special forces are required when using a diamond glass cutter. Apply as much pressure to the tool as you would to a pencil. Setting the right direction to the cutter and the correct inclination angle can be difficult for beginners. To understand the principle of operation, you can first practice on a sheet of rough material. After you have made a thin linear cut, you need to remember in what position the glass cutter was, and by the same principle to do it on a normal sheet. In order to make the cut more easily, the tool must be moved evenly along the length of the ruler without changing the pressure or angle of the tool.
Roller cutters must be held perpendicular to the plane of the material. A small line marking is made on the sheet edges with the glass cutter so that the pressure can be reduced in these fragile parts. Failure to do so will result in chipping. Then the ruler must be set back from the marks by the width of the cutting element and the cut must be made. The work must be carried out from the far edges, the glass cutter should be drawn towards yourself, pressing it firmly by its side against the ruler.
Cutting should be done quickly. So that it takes about 2 seconds per 1 m. When working with a roller glass cutter, it is necessary to apply more force than when working with diamond tools, and the force should not be changed along the entire length, except for the edges.
How well the tool is being used can be heard. At a smooth hiss or crackle can be said that the work was done correctly, but if there are squeaks or creaking, it is an indication that something is done incorrectly. This is an indication that the tool has become dull or that it has been pressed too lightly. The presence of small white splinters on the line can be an indication of overdoing the pressure, so it should be a little weaker.
A quality cut will allow the glass to break easily and obtain straight edges.
If the lines are faulty or the glass is too thick, you will need to tap the other side of the sheet. To do this, move the glass to the edge of the working surface so that the line slice is 5 mm from its edge. Then the tool should be used to tap a line from the top edge of the sheet to the bottom edge by means of the head. This will create micro cracks that will allow the cut material to break off easily. For breaking off small strips of glass, you can use the side of a glass cutter or pliers.
Tricks of the trade
Even considering the fact that it is quite easy to use the glass cutter, people who do not have experience in this matter should try their hand at an unnecessary piece of glass. Through these steps you can choose the correct angles of inclination, pressure force and determine the possible mistakes to avoid them in the process of finishing work. Because cutting produces glass dust and tiny shards of glass, you must also take care about safety, wearing goggles and gloves beforehand.
How you can make a glass circle?
How to properly cut with a glass cutter if such a piece is needed? There are several ways to achieve the goal. However, the choice depends on several factors. the diameter of the product, the thickness of the glass.
The most logical alternative is to use a circular glass cutter. But such a tool is very rare in the household. So we often have to look for a replacement for the device. An alternative exists: it is a circular tool, made of an ordinary glass cutter. The work consists of several stages.
- First, the center of the future figure is marked on the glass. A suction cup is fixed on it.
- Tie a strong string (line for trimmer) to it, and to its other end. a glass cutter, but so that the length of the rope is equal to the radius of the future circle.
The thread is stretched, then the tool conducts a fishing line for the trimmer. Additionally make cuts-perpendiculars on the four sides of the glass, they will allow you to “get” the circle out of the material without too much trouble. If the sheet is large, then draw many rays. The glass is taken in the hands, carefully pressed on its edges on all sides. After that, the “unnecessary” elements are quite easily broken off from the circle.
Cutting by a “professional”. glass cutter
For such “surgical” operation you need another tool. a ruler, it is better to find a thick plate, from which the glass cutter will be more difficult to slip off. Mark the material with a felt-tip pen or a special pencil. the glassblower, it is used for painting glass surfaces.
Having made the marks, the points are connected with the line of the future cut, the ruler is left on it. The cut is made only once, repeated manipulation is prohibited, otherwise the glass may crack. First at the top from the edge of the glass cutter draw a short line for the trimmer, its length. up to 5 mm. Then it is continued to the end of the piece.
Uniform force applied along the entire length is a must. Correctly carried out the line for the trimmer should be translucent, uniform. The sheet is broken up. If the operation is not successful at the first attempt, the line for the trimmer is tapped out with the handle of the glass cutter, and then the process of breaking is repeated.
After the most important stage is completed successfully, the edges of the chip are cleaned with a fine-grained sandpaper, the replacement for it. a bar.
It is more convenient to work with because of its familiar shape: the handle of a diamond glass cutter is very similar to a pencil, so it is held in exactly the same way. However, there are some peculiarities even in working with such a comfortable tool:
- it is placed at an angle to the surface to be processed: the position of the glass cutter is similar to the “pose” of a pencil when writing or drawing;
- Excessive force is contraindicated in this case, it will lead to irregularities or chips in the cut line;
- Repeated drawing on the “outlined” areas is taboo, an indentation of at least some millimeters is necessary;
- the work requires accuracy and speed: the operation of scratching a line on a meter long sheet of glass takes about 2 seconds.
The cutting trimmer line is aligned with the edge of the working surface so that the unnecessary part of it is on the weight. the cut is tapped from the underside until a small crack is formed. During this operation, “superfluous” glass fragments are usually separated from the sheet by themselves, without requiring the master’s effort. Sometimes a hanging piece of glass is accurately broken off.
Roller, oil glass cutter
In this case a strictly vertical positioning of the tool is obligatory, pressing efforts when cutting are also necessary. Glass separation is always started with the most delicate method. light knocking on the back side. If the glass does not give in, more serious steps are taken.
Along the entire cutting line (either with gaps or only from one edge) under the sheet put matches and/or toothpicks. Then the sheet is gently pressed on both sides. If even these manipulations don’t help, again aligning the line for the trimmer with the edge of the working surface, try to press the glass by hand, but without fanaticism. Unyielding material is a good reason to try to make a different line for the trimmer cut.
Actions with an oil tool do not differ a bit from work with a usual roller, the only difference is that this process is easier because of lubrication of the surface.
If you need a round hole
For beginners in this case, it is better to get a glass cutter-cirk somewhere, as an independent assembly of the tool, which may not be needed anymore, is of no use. In this case, the end-pin is fastened in the center of the future circle, then the desired radius is set. The circle is drawn accurately, smoothly, but quickly. Further work on its removal is similar to the previous work.
The process of this cutting is somewhat more complicated, but also not very demanding, even for novice masters of glass cases. To ensure accuracy, first make a blank-template. The template is cut out of chipboard, the recommended thickness is 5 mm. The roller will not be able to touch it tightly, so an indentation of 2-3 mm is necessary. To the bottom of the cut out template glued strips of duct tape, they will not let it “wiggle” on the glass. The finished template is placed on the blade, drawing a continuous line for the trimmer. Then tapping on the underside.
So how do you answer yourself the question: “How to choose the right glass cutter??”.
And the answer begs for itself: you must first determine how many and what tasks are required to perform.
If you want to cut one small thin glass. it is enough to limit yourself to a carbide glass cutter of roller type.
If you are going to cut glass more than once, a tool with a diamond tip will be the right solution.
If you have a professional attitude to work, it’s hard to imagine better than an oil glass cutter. You will enjoy its durability for a very long time.
And, of course, as for all glass and tile cutting tools, buy them in specialized stores so as not to be disappointed and not to run to the store for the next.
The choice of professional equipment is the prerogative of highly competent professionals who take into account all economic and technical nuances of a large production.
How to cut glass with a glass cutter. Photo and video of the process
Probably every man has ever had to replace broken glass. Marking new glass is not difficult, but cutting it accurately is not. Cutting glass at home requires only special high quality tools.
The preparatory step
To minimize complications, the glass should be well washed and thoroughly dried. If the material is new, wiping it with unnecessary newspaper is quite enough. Old glass is washed, degreased with kerosene, and dried.
To make sure that the glass is the right size, you need to mark it out with a regular pencil. Cutting should be done so as to minimize waste, so the long side of the glass is aligned with the longer side of the future product.
Before you cut glass with a glass cutter, you need to decide what kind of tool you have. The fact is that there are two types of glass cutters, and the technology of their use differs significantly:
The diamond glass cutter is expensive, but can cut glass with a thickness of 10 mm. Even complex structures with curves can be cut with this tool. The tool is held as an ordinary writing pen at a slight angle (only more vertical). The line for the cut trimmer should be neat, thin, and colorless. The roller glass cutter cuts 1-4 mm thick glass. Available with 1, 3 and 6 castors. The oil-impregnated roller glass cutter has recently become very popular, because it is the easiest to work with. The tool is held strictly perpendicular to the working surface, with the pressure force regulated by the index finger. The trimmer blade will be white if all cutting techniques are followed.

Choosing a tool to cut glass is not difficult, the process of work itself is more difficult, because for a good result you need to be as careful and attentive as possible.
The glass is placed completely on the prepared work surface. To start, you can practice on a small piece. Before cutting, experts recommend putting a thick wooden ruler under the glass cutter, positioning it so that it is away from the outlined line. To prevent the ruler from slipping, a few pieces of rubber are put under it.
When cutting, you must apply equal force evenly and draw a precise line for the trimmer at once. A second attempt to run the trimmer line in the same place will result in cracks. If the line for the trimmer is not successful, you need to step back 1 mm from the place of the first attempt and try again. After the cut, the glass must be positioned so that the trimmer blade coincides with the edge of the working surface. The underside of the glass is gently tapped with the glass cutter and broken off while holding a portion of the sheet on the table. You can break glass with your hands or pliers (with pieces of hose put on the ends).
But if neither one or the other tool is at hand, you can try cutting the glass with a sharp pair of sewing scissors. It’s simple: you need to mark the material and create microcracks with scissors.
Types of glass and special features
There are practically no problems with cutting ordinary glass. But with other types of glass, there can be serious difficulties.
Cutting toughened glass is practically impossible, because most often when you try to cut it, it breaks in random places. If you are planning to use tempered glass in your home furnishings, you must cut the glass immediately before tempering. This means that such work should be entrusted only to professionals.
Patterned glass is often used for glazing doors or other interior applications. The process of cutting glass is no different from working with normal glass, except that ribbed glass is best cut with a roller glass cutter only on the smooth side.
This synthetic plastic material can be cut with any tool at hand, including a cutter, sewing scissors, and metal saw. If the plexiglass is very thin (no more than 2 mm), a sharpened office knife can be used as a cutting tool.
Glass is best cut on a large fiberboard table. Before you cut glass with a glass cutter, it is best to wear protective goggles and gloves: tiny shards can get into your eyes, and chipped edges can seriously injure your hands. Covered shoes are also worth taking care of to avoid unwanted cuts.
