Trim on the door: The easiest way to make a 45° cut even without experience

The architrave is an integral part of the door frame, which gives the aesthetics of the appearance. However, this element is very often scratched and wiped and therefore needs to be replaced. And here the main task is to cut it at a 45° angle. This kind of work is quite simple if you have a plane at hand, but what to do if you do not have one, and you need to do it urgently? In today’s article we’ll talk about the easiest ways to make a 45° entry, even without experience, using improvised tools and materials. But for starters. the simplest option with such a tool as a plane.

Such a device as a plier is very convenient to use, in addition, it is inexpensive. Therefore, if possible, it is better to buy it in advance, it will not take up much space in the closet. Most often the plane is sold together with a fine hacksaw, which is easier to cut casings. If it is not available, then you should not use for cutting an ordinary hacksaw with a wide saw. It is better to use a hacksaw for metal, because it will help to cut the trim more accurately.

Door trim: the easiest way to make a 45° cut

The way to join the architraves without trimming

Roof strips today are often not trimmed at an angle for subsequent jointing, but joined together at right angles. This method of joining the platbands does not require any special trimming, which is very convenient. In addition, this method looks more modern and attractive.

Trimming at an angle with the cutter

If it is still necessary to cut at an angle to a particular part, it is worth stocking the chisel. the simplest device, which looks like a small box. The chisel has slots that are designed for a saw or a long sharp knife. Of course, these slots are made so that they form an even and accurate angle of 45 degrees.

In fact, the plier can have a lot of cuts at once, at different angles. This is convenient, because with a single device, you can cut any parts at different angles.

adjustable jigsaws are available on the market. The slots in such a chisel can be adjusted, allowing the craftsman to set exactly the angle that is required at a given moment. In particular, it is quite easy to translate the slots of such a chair to a position of 45 degrees.

Now the workpiece can be trimmed elementary. Put a baguette, a platband, or a baseboard in the chair, and then insert a saw into the slots and cut off the excess elementary. The angle we end up with is perfect, exactly 45 degrees.

What to do if you don’t have a jigsaw?? Very simple. We need to make a template, on which it will not be difficult to transfer the necessary markings on the workpieces. As a template we can choose thick cardboard or anything else that will be appropriate in this case.

How to make a power mitre at home?

If the above methods are not to your liking. you can make a bowie at home yourself. A chisel is a tool that resembles a tray and has a U-shaped shape.

It has saw slots, designed for sawing material at a certain angle. The size of the parts is not very important, but the wider will be our homemade device, the wider and more accurate we will be able to saw wide slats.

Important: You must do everything sensibly, and you should not overdo it, because if the width of the saw blade is wider than half the width of the hacksaw, it will be awkward to cut.

It is possible to make a marking resorting to the methods described above, and then use small pieces of plywood and a hacksaw. And in order to fasten everything together, you can use self-tapping screws or even super glue. However, all this is more complicated and will take much more time, though it will provide the most accurate result (of course, if done correctly).

Undoubtedly, the crossbeam is a handy and practical tool. It is sold in almost any construction store and has a low price that absolutely everyone can afford.

However, if for some reason there is a situation that it is impossible to get the tool in the shortest possible time. you can use improvised tools, such as a ruler, protractor or even tiles, with which it is easy to create a template with the necessary markings or even recreate the jig at home.

Ways to get a nice angle

The most difficult area in the design of the ceiling surface frieze are the corner areas. If you just cut the skirting at the right angle, it will leave unsightly gaps. To achieve a snug fit between two adjoining products, you must also trim their edges. There are several ways to do this.

In rooms with even corners and walls, it is usually not very difficult to cut a ceiling plinth with a wire cutter. The tool looks like a U-shaped trough with 90 and 45 degree saw rails. Placed inside the device required to cut the element, insert the saw into the guides. In the process of cutting the baguette must be held firmly in place, to avoid defects. It is difficult enough to cut a skirting board, as it is necessary to achieve its simultaneous adjacency to two planes. If the width of the baguette is small, it is more convenient to press it to the near side. “How to cut ceiling plinths. tools and cutting rules”.

How to cut the corner of the ceiling plinth, if the outer corner is decorated:

  • Before you cut the corners of ceiling plinths with a wire cutter, a 45-degree angle saw is made.
  • The mortar is adjusted in a comfortable position. This will make it possible to determine the exact location of the skirting board: first of all, this applies to the edge of the product, which will be adjacent to the ceiling. To avoid confusion, it is best to position the right-hand plank on the right and the left-hand one on the left.
  • The surface is pressed against the underside of the mortar. In this case, the second part is lifted, being the nearest. It is necessary to put it in such a way to avoid its wobbling during the work. In this arrangement, the front side of the product is turned to the opposite side.
  • The cut must be made at a 45 degree angle from yourself. If everything is done correctly, the folding of the two halves results in a beautiful external corner.

After the correct sawing of the ceiling plinth in the corners is completed, both pieces should first be attached to the ceiling “dry” to check the matching geometry of the corner. If necessary, adjustments are made by trimming with a knife. Small gaps are easier to cover with putty, which, after drying, must be treated with sanding paper. As for the inner corner, it is much easier to make it.

The procedure, how to cut the ceiling plinth in the corners of the interior type is much like the above described. The first thing to do is to determine the side that will be adjacent to the ceiling. It is placed on the bottom of the jigsaw. The back side is leaned against the near wall. After the sawing of the skirting board on the ceiling is finished, the received fragments should be dryly attached to the corner, checking the quality of the junction. If necessary, adjustment is carried out. After that, the installation of one and the second skirting board on the mounting compound. Small gaps in the corner can be filled with special putty.

Polyurethane

Skirting boards made of polyurethane are the most expensive products. The high cost is due to a large number of advantages, among which. excellent resistance to moisture, high mechanical strength, reliability and elasticity. For most situations, this option will be optimal.

However, there are exceptions. polyurethane poorly withstands temperature fluctuations. If you place such skirting boards in the kitchen in the area of the stove, over time, the polyurethane will deform and crack. Cutting such fillets is performed with a special knife, and there are no complications in the process.

Other methods of corner trimming

When the contiguous planes of the walls of the room form a right angle, the best solution would be to use a plier. In other cases, you can use other methods, how to saw the ceiling plinth at an angle, for example, by marking this product on the ceiling. This technology allows you to take into account all the deviations relating to the size of the angle, as well as the unevenness of the walls.

  • First of all, two blanks are cut according to an exactly drawn vertical line.
  • Then one of the slats is applied to the surface, keeping its end against a perpendicular wall. Similarly proceed with the second part of the skirting board.
  • Their contours are outlined on the ceiling plane with a pencil. The point of intersection is the mark against which to cut the fillet, forming an angle in it.
  • Then reapply each of the strips and mark them with a line to trim the cut, which will connect its two edges.
  • The baseboard is cut in accordance with the outlined lines, and then both parts of it are connected and attached to the place of installation.

If of all the ways how to saw the corners of the ceiling plinth, selected this, it is important to take into account a few nuances:

  • It is better to use for internal corners;
  • Do not start to mount the skirting boards one by one, without first joining the two parts and checking their relative position. The gaps left between the strips should be puttyed.

Not every interior design involves the use of a ceiling plinth, but most often the overall appearance of the room seems incomplete without it. In the attachment of this element. the fillet. there is nothing complicated, almost all types of skirting boards are attached to the glue. But the question of how to properly cut the ceiling skirting boards in the corners of rooms, can puzzle many.

After all, even in the simplest rooms there are internal corners where ceiling skirting boards must be precisely and beautifully aligned. And in a more complex configuration of the room will have to join the skirting boards, making the outer corner. In this article we will consider different variants, how to cut a ceiling plinth using improvised tools and without them.

First, we should deal with the question of what to cut the ceiling plinth, the answer depends on the material from which the fillet is made. At the moment, ceiling skirting boards are sold in polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polystyrene foam (foam plastic), polyurethane and wood.

PVC ceiling skirting boards are the cheapest.

Dents and creases easily form on them, which cannot be removed, so the product has to be discarded. Another disadvantage is that they are electrostatic, i.e. they can attract dust. They can be cut with a sharp construction knife or hacksaw.

Skirting boards made of expanded polystyrene also belong to the cheapest skirting boards. This material is very fragile, when processed easily crumbles, so cut the polystyrene foam must be a sharp knife or hacksaw for metal, not making too much pressure.

Skirting boards made of expanded polystyrene are a bit more expensive than polystyrene boards, they are denser and harder to cut. Nevertheless, they crumble less, so they are easier and more convenient to work with. Can be cut with a construction knife and a metal saw.

Polyurethane skirting boards are the most expensive at the moment. They are strong, flexible and moisture resistant, can be easily cut with a construction knife and will not crumble.

A disadvantage of polyurethane skirting boards is their dependence on temperature differences. For example, over a gas stove, a polyurethane skirting board will acquire residual deformations and begin to crack slightly. If you try to mill or trim such a baseboard, it may warp or otherwise deform.

Wooden ceiling plinths are dense heavy products, which can only be cut with a hacksaw, preferably with small frequent teeth. It is also possible to use a metal blade.

Before proceeding to the list of ways how to properly cut a ceiling plinth, I would like to note that there is a possibility not to cut the plinth with particular precision.

There are special corner pieces on sale, in which the edges of the skirting boards are inserted. In this case, the plank of the plinth is enough to undercut at an angle of 90 °, and the corner element will hide all the flaws. But this method is not always used, because the size of the corner elements is somewhat larger than the baseboards themselves, so the corners in the room will stand out against the general background.

Sometimes this can look clumsy. Nevertheless, if the design of the room allows the use of corner elements for ceiling plinths, it makes sense to use them. The following instructions will be useful to those, who have nevertheless decided to trim a skirting board precisely to a pre-set angle.

How to trim a ceiling skirting board correctly. Important details

Measurements for cutting the skirting boards on the ceiling must be made in a special way. To determine and mark the inside corner, the length should be measured from the corner itself. To mark an outer corner, it is essential to take into account that the skirting board will protrude into the interior of the room at a distance equal to its width.

It is not desirable to fix the skirting boards until they have been precisely tested and the mating skirting has been cut. Only when the mating strips match perfectly in the corner can they be installed and fastened. If you work with polyurethane or wooden skirting boards, you can fix the defects and imperfections with a file or file. To fit the foam plastic product, you should arm yourself with a sharp knife.

If, even after finishing plinths remain even a small gap, do not rush to upset. it is not difficult to patch up with an ordinary putty. It is not that difficult to cut a ceiling plinth accurately and neatly. But to acquire at least a small skill, first try to practice on small blanks.
