How to Dilute Gasoline and Grass Trimmer Oil for Fueling
Some types of engine oil are for four-stroke power units, while others are for two-stroke. They are not interchangeable, and you should pour them according to their purpose, because different requirements for lubricants for motors with different working cycle. Thus, oil for four-stroke engines, which use a forced lubrication system, is designed for prolonged exposure and is designed to provide a more stable coating of parts. In 2-stroke engines. the oil comes with the fuel and should dissolve in it instantly, burning smokelessly with minimal deposits in the form of soot and ash. Therefore, a characteristic feature of 2-stroke oils is their good cleaning and minimal aggressive additives. They, unlike the 4-stroke fluid, do not contain ash, anti-seize and antiwear additives, which allows them to burn almost completely with the fuel without formation of soot and toxic exhaust.
The peculiarity of oils for four-stroke engines is a set of metal-organic additives, aimed at improving their physical and mechanical properties and increasing their efficiency. And if pouring such a mixture into the engine with a duty cycle on two strokes, it will lead to the formation of ash deposits on the surface of the piston and walls of the combustion chamber. The increased accumulation of sediment, in turn, can provoke the appearance of various troubles, which can be eliminated only by doing complex and expensive repair of the engine motoblock. Soot, which clogs the air filter and settles in the piston ring grooves if the wrong petroleum product is used, also causes a great deal of harm. Accumulation of soot is fraught with loss of ring mobility, which is a direct way to reduce the power of a power tiller engine, its performance deterioration and even complete failure.
The main component of the fuel mixture for chainsaw engines is gasoline with an octane number not lower than 92. Expired gas condensate-based consumables with water and mechanical impurities in their volume are not suitable for the preparation of fuel.
- Experts’ opinions on the use of different brands of gasoline are ambiguous. On the one hand it is recognized that domestic A-92 gasoline does not fully comply with the European standards.
- On the other hand, the quality of gasoline A-95 is questioned because of its high content of anti-detonation additives. You can use this fuel for cooking gasoline for a chainsaw only if you are absolutely sure of its quality.
- The difficulty lies in the presence of various improving additives that unscrupulous manufacturers and retailers use to increase the performance of automobile gasoline with a lower octane rating.
Also there are irreversible changes in the operational properties of fuel in case of its long enough storage in plastic containers, regardless of the level of their gasoline and oil resistance.
lawn mowers are quite a common technique for weed control in country houses, homesteads, road and housing services. These devices have two other names. grass trimmer and lawnmower. These units are differentiated by their engines. expensive of them have four-stroke engines, all others have two-stroke engines. Of course, the latter are the most popular among the population, as they are simpler in design, and lighter in weight, and much cheaper than their four-stroke competitors. However, two-stroke models are inconvenient because the fuel mixture for them must be prepared manually, maintaining a strict dosage between gasoline and oil. In four-stroke analogues mixing of these components is automatic, you only need to fill the gas tank and oil tank with the appropriate substances. For two-stroke brushcutters, let’s talk about the correct gas filling, because it really affects how long your brushcutters last and work efficiently.
How to Mix (Dilute) Gasoline and Oil for 2T Engines.
To summarize the above. For your brand-name machines, use oil that has been developed or recommended by the machine manufacturer. For example, STIHL FS 55 brushcutter, use STIHL HP oil (see lithium-ion lubricant). Figure 1a) or STIHL HP SUPER, for the Husqvarna 128R brushcutter use Husqvarna HP oil (Figure 1b) or Husqvarna LS. For 2.Do not use 4-stroke motor oils in conventional combustion engines. For example 10W30, SAE 30, etc.д.
Figure 1 a-Husqvarna oil (left), STIHL oil (right)
Never use 2-stroke oil intended for water-cooled engines, as these oils are designed to operate at lower temperatures.
Observe the proportions of oil and gasoline for the fuel mixture specified by the manufacturers in the owner’s manual. Chinese manufacturers most often give the ratio of 1 part oil to 25 parts gasoline, STIHL and Husqvarna give 1/50.When preparing a small volume of mixture (up to 1 liter), it is very important to carefully measure the amount of oil in the mixture. Even small errors in the amount of oil can lead to serious inconsistencies in the mixture. In these cases, you can use a medical syringe for precise dosing.It is necessary to prepare fuel mixture in a clean container specially designed for this purpose. (see incl. figure 2)
I do not recommend using improvised plastic bottles and canisters, because gasoline can dissolve plastics and all this “slurry” gets into the fuel tank and causes failure of the carburetor.
Plastic canisters designed for gasoline are always marked with the “flame” sign. It is very convenient to use a canister with a no-flooding system (see Hopper Safety Data Sheet). figure 3). The no-fill system has a valve that prevents fuel from spilling when the tank is full.

Choosing the right oil
Depending on its chemical composition, there are different types of engine oil:
- mineral. made from petroleum distillates and designed for low-power machinery with air cooling;
- Semi-synthetic. a blend of mineral and synthetic oils, suitable for 2T and 4T and air and liquid-cooled machinery;
- Synthetic. produced on the basis of esters and can be used in powerful machinery, as well as for work in difficult climatic conditions.
Important! 2T and 4T oils differ in their ability to dissolve, burn, and evaporate. At the same time, in order to distinguish the liquid lubricant from gasoline, it is colored in different colors: blue, green, red.
Depending on the API classification, the following groups of oils for trimmer motors can be distinguished
- TA. for low-powered equipment with engine capacity up to 50 cm³ and air cooling;
- TV. for powerful equipment with a motor volume of 50-200 cm³ and air cooling system;
- TC. for powerful two-stroke equipment (brushcutters, chainsaws, lawnmowers, etc.).) with engine volume 50-200 cm³;
- TD. for liquid-cooled boat engines.
In order to choose the optimal oil for a specific trimmer model for the grass, it is better to take into account the recommendations specified in the manual. API-TV and API-TC class oils are usually used for 2T brushcars.
For your information! There is also a JASO classification for two-stroke engines and SAE30 for four-stroke engines.
The leading manufacturers of garden equipment design and produce their own oils for their equipment. Such lubricants most fully meet all the technical and operational characteristics of specific trimmer series. For example STIHL (STIHL)FS 5 brushcutter you should use STIHL HP or STIHL HP SUPER oil and Husqvarna 143R you should use Husqvarna HP or Husqvarna LS oil. But for the Patriot brand is suitable and normal mineral oil M-8B.
How and how much to fill
Filling the grass trimmer’s fuel tank is easy. To do this, you need to place the tank in such a way that the lid is located on top. The amount of fuel depends on the model of the grass trimmer. This information is listed in the manual, and there is also a mark directly on the tank.
Never overfill the tank.
It can cause fuel to overflow in the air intake and fuel filter, possibly damaging the engine or igniting the fuel.
When refueling a grass trimmer, you need to observe safety precautions:
- Try to pour the liquid so that it does not spill, you can use a watering can for this purpose;
- If gasoline does spill, it must be wiped up immediately;
- The grass trimmer should be started after the fuel container has been put away in a safe and secure place, preferably more than 10 meters away;
- If there are long intervals between operations, drain the remaining fuel.
Correct proportions and adherence to mixing and fueling technology will help extend the life of the grass trimmer. At the same time, it is recommended to choose only a quality product of the appropriate brand.
Gasoline grass trimmers are ideal for the care of the site due to their mobility. Such lawnmower models require periodic fuel changes. It is necessary to approach to a choice of gasoline with knowledge. Do not cut corners on your purchase.
Recommendations for storing the ready fuel mixture for grass trimmer
After filling up the grass trimmer, many put off the remaining mixture in the bottle until the next time. Sometimes this next time comes not soon, and stretches up to the next year. Do not keep the mixture ready for so long, because the oil decomposes. After the mixture has been prepared, it should be used up within 1-2 weeks. In addition, you can not also store the tool for a long time with the fuel mixture poured into the tank, as the effect will be similar. To prevent unforeseen circumstances, it is recommended to consider the following recommendations for storing the ready mix of gasoline and oil:
- Prepare the fuel mixture in the amount that will be used. If you don’t know how much fuel you are using, then it is better to prepare less
- If the fuel mixture remains in the tank of the grass trimmer (when the tool is hidden until the next season), it should be completely used up or drained
- Before pouring the prepared mixture into the tank, you need to stir it thoroughly
- Store ready mixture in a tightly screwed container, and in a place restricted to sunlight
If all recommendations are followed, the life of the grass trimmer will be at least as long as indicated in the manual. The use of quality consumables paired with adherence to the grass trimmer mix recommendations will result in a long and efficient service life of the gasoline-powered tool.
