What and how to cut plastic skirting boards: the subtleties of working with material

To decorate surfaces and design joints different products are used. Deciding to perform repairs by yourselves, it is worth to understand what and how to cut a plastic skirting board, so as not to damage the product and correctly perform the connection of individual fragments. For this purpose, you can use both special tools and improvised means. Before using them, it is worth getting acquainted with the main features of use.

Produced by manufacturers plastic skirting differs in the degree of rigidity and shape.

Depending on the rigidity of the product there are:

  • Rigid. Closely resembles a wooden skirting board. Allows for installation under ceilings and at the floor. Polyvinylchloride is used for the manufacture of rigid skirting boards, giving them sufficient strength and rigidity. The product has a moderate flexibility and is available in a wide range of colors. Can easily break under the action of the bending moment.
  • Soft. Similar to a flexible tape, which is installed without any additional trimming. Usually made of PVC. By the degree of popularity, they are considerably inferior to their rigid analogues. It is the best option for rooms with uneven walls. It is fixed on a special glue, the basis of which is polyurethane, or on putty.

What and how to cut plastic baseboards

Configuration of plastic skirting boards mounted on the floor may vary significantly.

  • T-shaped, designed for floors with carpeting as a decorative coating. For their decoration are suitable strips of carpet, fixed on the surface of the elements with double-sided adhesive tape.
  • L-shaped, allowing finishing material to be fixed to the floor surface.

The functionality of plastic skirting boards also differs.

  • inner cable-channel, allowing you to perform a hidden laying of one or two wires for different purposes;
  • Pressed rubber strips, thanks to which the profile will adhere better to an uneven or rough surface.

The sizes of produced profiles vary in a wide range. Their width can be 40-150 mm with a thickness of 10-38 mm and strip length of 2-2,5 m.

Other Ways

With good eye and accuracy of action of hands can be used homemade template, which resembles an imitation of a jigsaw. For this take a narrow board or thick plywood and draw a layout in the form of a horizontal rectangle. Use a protractor to mark 45° on the right and left sides of the rectangle. Mowing line draws, connecting the opposite edges.

Now you can cut the ceiling plinth using this template. Actions are ordinary and similar to the description above in the first option. Only the ceiling parts should not be inserted, but superimposed on the outline and co-operate the hacksaw with the layout marking.

Description of methods of gluing ceiling skirting boards (cornices) on the ceiling. Gluing method with glue, putty and sealant. How to make a smooth angle on the ceiling.

How to detect an angle between intersecting lines

To determine the size of the angle between the intersecting lines, you need both lines (or one of them) to move to a new location by the method of parallel transfer until they intersect. After that, find the size of the angle between the resulting intersecting lines.

Instructions

If you have nothing at hand except a sheet of paper and a pencil, you can even do without these tools. To do this, very carefully roll a sheet of paper in quarters, while perfectly smoothing the folds. As a result, at the place of the double fold get a right angle, the one that has 90°. Fold the corner in half again, and you have the desired angle of 45°. True, in this case a small error in the form of loss of a few degrees will appear. For a more accurate drawing draw a right angle with a pencil on a clean sheet of paper, carefully cut it out and fold in half. this will give the angle of 45 °.

Allowed to draw the angle with the support of right triangles, which can be different. with angles of 90 °, 45 °, 45 ° and 90 °, 60 °, 30 °. Take a triangle (with 90°, 45°, 45° angles) and draw a 45° acute angle on a piece of paper. If there is only a triangle with angles of 90 °, 60 °, 30 °, then on another sheet of paper outline the right angle, cut it out, fold it in half and trace on a proper drawing. This will be the angle of 45 °.

The most accurate variant of drawing will be the one that uses a protractor. Draw a line on a piece of paper for a trimmer, mark a corner point on it, attach a protractor and mark the point 45 °. Then combine them with each other.

How to cut the profile tube at an angle of 45 angle grinder

Fascinating that even with the compass is also allowed to depict the angle of 45 °. To do this rather have in front of a depicted angle of 90 ° (say, with the help of a right triangle, or by folding the paper in quarters). Then draw a circle from the corner point with a compass. At the intersection of the circle and the sides of the right angle, mark the points. Now, from any of the 2 points with the same solution of a compass make another two circles. At their intersection will be a point that will combine with the corner, resulting in two corners of 45 °.

Useful tip For a more accurate drawing take care that the pencil stick is sharp. Ruler and triangles is better to use a wooden.

Three working ways to trim a baseboard

For floor and ceiling skirting boards trimming instructions are almost the same. But if the floor curve angle can be something to cover, on the ceiling is a problem, so we will pay more attention to how to cut the ceiling skirting boards.

The way Classic Jigsaw

The classic bowie is a U-shaped bed with slots in the opposing sides. In this bed is inserted a suitable size detail and through the slots in the sides is sawed off with a hacksaw. The idea is not new, the tool is several hundred years old, but in spite of its simplicity, not everyone knows how to properly cut the corner of the ceiling plinth using a bow and arrow.

Not everyone knows how to cut a ceiling plinth in the corner with a classic wire cutter.

Tip: ceiling skirting boards when trimming attached to the edge of the skirting tool, which is closer to you, and the opposite of the floor, you should apply to the far side of the tool. It’s not a dogma, but it’s a lot easier to work with.

With floor skirting boards is easier to work with, as the jig is on a horizontal plane you easier to orientate the position of the skirting board. People most often make mistakes when trimming ceiling tacks, they simply do not put it correctly in the tool. Here is a simple but important rule.

Important: the edge of the ceiling fillet, which touches the wall, must be directed to the upper edge of the edge of the chair, and that part of the baseboard, which borders the ceiling, is placed on the bottom of the chair.

The angle, as you know, 2 sides, so, to make fewer mistakes accustom yourself to the bar, which will be mounted on the right side of the angle to put into the stud on the right, and the bar, which is fastened to the left, put into the stud on the left. For more details on the intricacies of using the Classic Jigsaw, see the video in this article.

How to properly trim the inner and outer corner of the ceiling tile.

In addition to the classic U-shaped jig, there are two other types of such designs. this is a professional and rotary tool. As for the professional version, it is used only by masters. The appliance is quite bulky, but can be rotated at any angle and has a hacksaw that can be fixed in position.

Professional power pliers with a locking mechanism for hacksaws and workpieces.

Rotating tool can be freely called a “” jigsaw. Of the pluses here is only the ability to clearly fix the angle of rotation of the bar. On the one hand it is easy to work with it. you just set the angle, put it on the baseboard and cut it. But on the other hand to such a tool takes some getting used to, if you have no experience in working with a hacksaw, then take a rotary jigsaw is not worth it.

Tip: When choosing a classic U-chisel, first of all, do not take the Chinese products. And secondly, try to buy models with the ability to rigidly fix the part inside, one such model is shown in the photo below.

A compound pliers with the possibility of fixation of the workpiece inside is much more convenient to work with.

The Way to Trim by Template

Most often both ceiling and floor baseboards need to be trimmed at 45º. If there are no specialized tools nearby, an improvised jig can be drawn on a notebook page. From the school course of geometry we know that the diagonal of any square in relation to the base has an angle of 45º.

To set aside an angle of 45º it is possible by putting a plinth on a diagonal of a square.

Next you need to draw a square and spend two diagonals in it. this will be the desired 45º. You will only have to properly attach the skirting to the sheet and mark. True, to cut the skirting board evenly without guides, you need a good eye and a good hand.

The method Applied universal

Trimming at 45º is a common option, but what can you do if you need another angle, and all you have is a hacksaw and a pencil?? It turns out that there is a very simple way out of this situation. Plus, this method is universal, it is suitable for both exterior and interior corners.

over, I can assure you that those corners, which visually seem straight, in fact have a couple of degrees of deviation. As a result, you buy a good tool, cut a clear 45º, and when docking “comes out” a gap between the skirting boards. This problem is eliminated here. And further on we will consider how to cut the ceiling plinth in the inner corner as an example.

Tip: For lines to be inconspicuous they can not be drawn with a pencil, but, for example, with a nail or the tip of a knife.

Important details

If you tried as hard as you could, but a small gap at the junction still “came out” do not get upset. With wooden fillets, such a gap can easily be filled with furniture wax. To seal the gap in the skirting boards made of polyurethane, foam plastic, plastic or plaster, putty is excellent. Naturally, the color of the composition must match the color of the baseboard.

Trimming baseboards in the joiner. Trimming technology

  • The right strip is placed in the jig from left to right. The back part, which will be attached to the ceiling, lies on the bottom.
  • Press the profile firmly to the trough and cut at a 45º angle.
  • From right to left another plank is placed and the same way is cut.
  • The corners of the cuts are docked at the point of attachment and adjusted with a knife (for foam and plastic).

The standard room is rectangular with 90º corners. In fact, such perfect corners are quite rare and are only the dream of the installer. If you are lucky, the procedure for cutting the corner of the edge of the baseboard is as described above, it is very easy to do it with a facing tool.

When cutting, remember which side the baseboard will be located on. To create a perfect corner for wooden surfaces or joints, you can use putty, but a good carpenter will never do this, and just saw evenly.

Cutting the inside corner

Tools used

First about how to cut a polymer or wood ceiling plinth, how to do it correctly and quickly. In this case, 2 tools will be needed for the work. a plier and a cutting tool.

How to cut baseboards?

As for the latter, the choice depends on the baseboard material:

  • Products made of foam plastic (all polystyrene) assume the use of a sharp office knife;
  • Polyurethane baseboards are usually cut with a hacksaw for metal;
  • Wood requires a jigsaw or saw to be “active.

The second potential tool for polyurethane. the same office knife. The reason is the rather low density of the material. Another alternative is a sharpened kitchen knife. A special requirement for it is not too thick a blade.

A metal saw is a good alternative to the wood jigsaw. The blade that has the smallest teeth is optimal. Otherwise the tool will get stuck in the material, and in such conditions it is extremely difficult to make a perfect cut.

Chisel and its self-made

The chisel is the second indispensable tool for working with baseboards.

What is it?

not everyone may know what it is. This is a device that allows you to cut any workpiece at different angles (45-90°). This is a groove, consisting of the bottom and two sides, in which slots are made for tools. At the bottom of it lay the material, and in the slots are inserted a hacksaw (knife, etc. д.). After sawing baguettes with it you get almost perfect blanks.

Chisel. a necessity for trimming any baseboards, because the joints of the elements require a 45° angle. Otherwise, the connection of the parts will not work: or there will be a gap between the adjacent baseboards, or they will simply need to be trimmed again, as it will be impossible to dock the adjacent products.

Yes, the remaining hole can be masked with a compound. However, this option is still not the best. The filler may soon change color slightly, and this discrepancy will become very noticeable. But even here there is an exception.

How to Make a Jigsaw?

To make it yourself will need to find a board length of about a meter or more, or a sheet of plywood (chipboard). You still need to prepare:

  • From the selected material, cut 3 parts with a width of 200 to 250 mm, their length. 300 mm (400, 500 mm). Using self-tapping screws connect them in a “U” shape.
  • Using a protractor, on top of the sides make marks corresponding to an angle of 45 ° (if necessary, and 90 °).
  • Then they take a hacksaw and saw the holes through so that the grooves reach the bottom of the tool.

Finished holes are bored raspilnym so that they could freely enter a jigsaw or hacksaw.

Ceiling baseboard. fillet

To do it correctly, it is important to strictly follow the existing recommendations and rules of finishing work. And then you will be pleased with the result.

In fixing the fillet (as this element is called) there are no difficulties: in fact, all varieties of products are attached to a reliable adhesive.

In order to hang a ceiling plinth, even inexperienced repairmen have no difficulty. They worry about something else entirely: how to properly cut the ceiling plinth? Virtually every room, no matter how intricately shaped, has corners.

And here in these internal corners of the individual elements of the skirting boards should be beautiful and evenly docked. And in rooms especially complex configuration will have to fudge and over the outer corners. Let’s try to figure out how to be in each of these situations, and how to cut the right part with the tools available.

Baseboard materials and cutting methods

First of all, let’s try to determine what can be made from the fillet, and what a particular material is better to cut.

On sale today you can find products made of foam (PVC), wood, polystyrene foam and polyurethane.

Perhaps some of the cheapest are skirting boards made of foam plastic, which is a fragile, soft and brittle material.

Even the fingers of the hand can leave dents on them, they are easy to form creases and defects. To cut a nice and even corner of the PVC baseboard is quite difficult.

An inexperienced craftsman may have a large amount of purchased material go to waste for this very reason. Also, this polymer has high electrostatic properties, which explains its ability to collect dust.

It is best to cut such skirting boards with a hacksaw or a sharp construction knife.

Products made of polystyrene foam are also inexpensive, although this material is a stronger analogue of traditional foam.

It is also machined with a sharp tool.

Extruded polystyrene foam

Skirting boards made of extruded polystyrene foam are a bit more expensive, they are somewhat denser and more difficult to cut. But they are much less likely to crumble and break.

That is why it is more convenient and easier to cut them. For this purpose, it is convenient to use a hacksaw or sharp knife.

Polyurethane skirting boards for the ceiling is currently probably one of the most expensive.

But they are worth their price: moisture-resistant, quite strong and tight, quite elastic.

Placed over the kitchen stove, the baseboard can be deformed and even crack a little.

They are perfectly cut with a special knife, without forming a crumb. But these products are very sensitive to temperature changes.

Wooden skirting boards for the ceiling are quite heavy and dense products, hard and durable.

They are well amenable to processing with a special fine-toothed hacksaw. You can also use a reliable metal blade. So how do you cut a ceiling plinth properly??

Prefabricated corners

Note that every master has the opportunity not to pore over the exact cut and fit corners.

In a construction store, you can purchase a factory-made corner element, into which you can easily insert the prepared edges of the skirting board.

It is enough to measure the required length of the workpiece, and cut it at right angles.

All defects and flaws can be hidden by this special element. But such a convenient way to use is not always possible, because the standard dimensions of these factory corners may differ markedly from the size of the baseboard itself.

These corners will stand out because of their disproportionality, and it will not look very neat. But if the design of the room and the size of workpieces allow you to use this method, you should not neglect it.

How to Make a Jigsaw at Home?

If the above methods are not to your liking. you can make a crosscut at home yourself. The chisel is a device that resembles a tray and is U-shaped.

It is equipped with saw slots, designed to cut the material at a certain angle. The size of the parts is not very important, but the wider our homemade device will be, the wider and more accurate we will be able to saw wide bars.

Important: You must do everything wisely, do not overdo it, because if the width of the crosscut will exceed half the width of the hacksaw, it will be inconvenient to cut.

You can make a mark by resorting to the methods described above, and then use small pieces of plywood and a hacksaw. And in order to fasten everything together, you can use self-tapping screws or even super glue. However, all this is more complicated and will take much more time, though it will provide the most accurate result (of course, if you do it right).

Undoubtedly, the plier is a handy and practical tool. It is sold in almost any construction store and has a low price that absolutely everyone can afford.

However, if for some reason it is impossible to get the tool in the short term. you can use improvised tools, such as a ruler, protractor or even tiles, which can easily create a template with the desired layout or even recreate the jig at home.
