Chainsaw chain. How to choose the right one.

These days chainsaws have become a must-have tool in almost every homeowner’s home. But along with this, there has been an increase in the number of questions asking about how to properly select a chainsaw chain to a chainsaw.

When buying a chain for a chainsaw you need to consider such parameters as purpose, pitch, driving link thickness, profile height and depth of cut.

Purpose. Chainsaws are available for both longitudinal and transverse cutting. The main difference between these chains is the angle of attack of the cutting links. For cross-cutting chains they are 25-35 degrees, for longitudinal chains. 25-35 degrees. 5 to 15 degrees.

If you use the chain for purposes other than those for which it is intended, the result will be lower productivity or more “aggressiveness”, higher vibration and greater stress on the saw’s engine.

Chain pitch. is the distance between three rivets in series divided by two. This parameter is determinative, and depending on its value, all existing chains can be divided into five groups with 1/4”, 0.325”, 3/8”, 0.404”, and 3/4” steps.

Pitch is traditionally measured in inches, and written as follows: three digits. regular fractions, and two. decimal fractions. This is to avoid confusion. In particular the result of converting 3/4” into a decimal is 0.375”. The difference with the previous standard (0.325”) is only one digit.

The higher the pitch of the chain, the bigger the link size and the higher the cutting performance, but at the same time the wider kerf causes cutting resistance. The chains which have a small pitch have, accordingly, other advantages. teeth per unit length, a smoother sawing motion and therefore less vibration. They also give a cleaner cut.

Thickness of the drive link (shank). the second highest value. During work the chain slides in the bar groove, and this sliding has to be smooth, without snags and at the same time without excessive “chatter. In other words. shank thickness and groove thickness should be strictly matched to each other, increasing chain fit reliability and eliminating the possibility of “jumping off.

there are five sizes in inches or millimeters, depending on your needs: 1.1 mm (0.043″), 1.3 mm (0.050″), 1.5 mm (0.058″), 1.6 mm (0.063″) and 2.0 mm (0.080″).

Profile height. Saw chains are available as high or low profile depending on the height of the cutting edge above the guide bar surface. The first ones are used for professional purposes to get the best performance. The latter are installed on household and semi-professional chainsaws, because they are safer because of the increased support area of the cutting links and reduced thickness of the cut chips.

Depth of Cut. the clearance between the top edge of the tooth and the kerf to control the thickness of the cut. Patterns with 0.025” (0.635 mm) and 0.030” (0.762 mm) clearances are most common, less frequently. with gaps up to 0.070” (1.778 mm), but they are designed for professional saws. The depth of cut largely determines the performance of the chain, its cutting speed. The greater the clearance. the higher the performance. but in the pursuit of efficiency do not forget about vibration: chains with small cutting depths in the kerf move softer, less twitching. So manufacturers, in an effort to balance vibration and productivity, very often install cutters with a minimum depth of cut on chains with a large pitch, and vice versa.

Engine displacement is a characteristic of the chainsaw, and does not seem to have anything to do with the chain itself. But the various catalogs and instructions for chains quite often indicate the engine sizes for which they are designed. And these recommendations should be followed. a chain fitted to an overpowered motor will be exposed to significantly higher loads and, consequently, will fail prematurely.

Chain Components. Every saw chain is made up of three types of links: cutting links, drive links (shanks) and connecting links. The rivets ensure a permanently tight joint. Cutting link. is probably the most complex part of the saw chain and consists of actually two parts: the cutting depth limiter and the L-shaped cutter with a contour cutting angle.

The upper cutting edge of the link is always wider than the chain and bar, resulting in a relatively free cut and minimal cutting resistance. The prong works like a planer: the further the blade (upper cutting edge) is extended above the plane of the planer (cutting limiter). the thicker the chip.

Operating characteristics of a cutting link determine numerous factors, namely: sharpening angle of the upper edge and its working cutting angle, angle of a lateral edge (angle of attack) and the height of the cutting limiter. When sharpening, all these parameters must be kept very clearly, as even small changes can lead to negative consequences.

cutting teeth are right-handed and left-handed and they are attached to the chain in alternating patterns. But generally speaking, cutters are divided into different types depending on their profile. A close examination of the “shapes” formed by the upper and lateral edges can distinguish two “boundary” options: a “seven” with a sharp angle between the edges and a rounded “sickle”.

The first variant is called a chisel. chisel. cutter, chisel), the second. chipper. to chip. chop into chips). All other profiles, including the quite popular in recent years seven-chisel. various modifications of these two versions.

Chisel, or chisel-like, chisels are noted for their high performance and sawing speed. Their configuration gives them a smaller contact area with the wood when working, which reduces the cutting resistance. This is a professional version, but it is very sensitive to abrasive environment, it blunts quickly when working with “dirty” wood, and when sharpening it requires precise observation of all angles and parameters.

Sickle-shaped profile. chipper. is less effective, because it has a slightly larger contact area with wood, but is also much easier to care for. The rounded corner is less susceptible to minor sharpening errors. Chains with this cutting link profile are therefore often fitted on domestic and semi-professional saws. In addition, such links are also good for working with contaminated wood.

The concept of pitch

the pitch is half the distance between two neighboring shanks or between three neighboring rivets.

There are several sizes, 1/4 inch being the smallest, 3/4 inch being the largest and 3/8 and 0.325 inch, the most popular.

find, chain, chainsaw

The pitch is a parameter that is not only in the headset, but also in the sprockets of the bar and chainsaw.

How to tell if the chain has blunted?

Answers to frequently asked questions:

Inspect chain. Teeth must be sharp.

A blunt chain will result in reduced performance. You will need to use more force to operate the tool. You will use more fuel than with a sharpened chain. In addition to higher gasoline and oil consumption, it puts more pressure on the engine and accelerates tool wear. Working with a blunt chain will damage the bar and drive sprocket, reducing the life of the chain saw.

Any saw has its own limit of sharpening 5-10 sharpening approximately. It so happens that there is nothing left to sharpen and you can’t do without a new chain.

Let’s see: If your chain is suitable for sharpening, then the workshop we sharpen the chain for 100 and 5 minutes.

And if you decide to buy a new chain, it will cost you from 500. And that’s regular, and if diamond, even more expensive.

You can sharpen your chain with a file, a diamond handy file with a guide for self-sharpening. it costs about 500 or buy a sharpening machine, vary. Some craftsmen sharpen with angle grinder, but we do not recommend doing it, to avoid injury. No one has ever had a new sharpening pin.

We can sharpen your saw chain in 5 minutes. professionally. Time for self-sharpening. about 1/2 hour.

In our workshop there is a special offer, removalinstallation on the bar 50 rubles.

Sand and soil, one minute blunt. Metal/iron in any form, wires, nails, rock. Dry oak, wet wood dulls the chain quickly. If there is no oil supply to the chain. It is best to determine sharpening quality when the material is clean and wet. drying is notoriously tricky.

, You have to look for a specialized repair shop. Not everyone sharpens diamond chains. (we don’t sharpen such chains yet) But we can say from experience that when it comes time to sharpen diamond chains, they are missing half of their teeth. So you need a new chain.

Normal chain on same STIHL 180 saw, 3/8, 1.3, 50 links- 700. Sharpening 100, removing and installing on saw 50.

The most important thing is to know the geometry of the saw blade and the nuances of sharpening. Parameters such as height of cut-off stop and sharpness of cutter corners must match the values specified by the manufacturer. Besides it is very important that the dimensions of all cutting links of one chain are identical. Otherwise, performance may be reduced, and the load on the motor and vibration level may increase. Uneven loading increases the likelihood of chain breakage. And there will be a crooked cut. You need to choose the right file to fit your chain.

sharpening the chain independently a file, it is very difficult to maintain the necessary sharpening angle on all links, and different sharpening angle will make itself felt at sawing. The wrong sharpening angle reduces the operating time of a saw chain and often results in too much chain being cut in workshops, not to mention the average person. Basic types of circuits

The main and basic parameter in dividing. is the chain pitch. Pitch is the distance between the links of the teeth, measured in inches. It is calculated according to the size of the drive and idler sprocket.

Note that the larger the file diameter, the larger the pitch. The basic step values adhered to by the world’s leading companies:

  • ⅜ “picco”. very popular, used mainly for soft wood. Round file up to 4 mm in diameter is used for sharpening;
  • 0.325 inch. Complete both domestic and professional saws with power from 3.5 l.с. File for sharpening 4.8 mm;
  • 0,375 (⅜). are only used in expensive professional saws. A 5.2 mm file will fit best;
  • 0,404. If previous 0,375 pitch was used for expensive saws, it is only for professional sawing equipment. A sharpening file will fit. 5,5 mm.

How To Buy The Proper Chain For A Chainsaw

The Top 8 Chainsaws from How to Choose is a ranking of the best light, semi-professional, and professional chainsaws for 2022.

Choosing a chain for your chainsaw (electric saw)

In order to choose a chain for your chainsaw, you need to know the following parameters (they overlap with the parameters of your saw bar).

The chain size should match the size of your tire. If you bought a chain smaller than your tire, you just won’t fit it. But if you bought a chain larger than your saw bar. the chain will not fit correctly or tension over your bar. Both lead to the impossibility of working with a chainsaw. Chain size is specified in inches and can be 10″, 12″, 13″, 14″, 15″, 16″, 18″ and higher.

The chain pitch (in the picture it is a distance “a”) is measured in inches and is labeled 0.325″, 0.375″ и 0.404″. Not to confuse similar numbers chain pitch 0.375″ is most commonly referred to as 3/8. Why is this so?? If you divide 3 by 8 you get 0.375. It should be understood that the higher the pitch of the chain, the more professional and powerful the saw is. The most used and popular chain pitch is 0.325″. This chain pitch is used in amateur and semi-professional saws. If you are using the saw for limbing and felling non-thick trees or construction work, then the 0.325″ chain pitch is more appropriate. A chain of this pitch will make your work smoother, more comfortable and will not tear the wood when you start sawing. A 3/8 pitch chain is used when felling thin trees and for cutting through medium thickness wood. And the chain pitch is 0.404″ is only used in professional saws and we won’t talk about it in this article, because it’s not the most popular saw. к. it is not very popular and our readers probably won’t encounter it.

Saw chain shank thickness (drive link thickness) is one of the important chain parameters. The drive links are designed for different tires, so pay attention to this parameter. shank thickness may be of the following sizes: 1.1 mm, 1.3 mm, 1.5 mm, 1.6 mm and 2 mm (0.043″, 0.058″, 0.063″ and 0.08″ respectively). A 1.1 mm chain is used in small saws and it is impossible to do serious work with such a chain. A chain with a drive link thickness of 1.3 to 1.6 mm is capable of handling heavier loads. chain is quite popular and is used on amateur and semi-professional saws. If thickness of its shank is 2 mm, we can say at once that a chain is used in professional saws. The following conclusion can be drawn: the higher is thickness of driving link, and accordingly the wider is bar groove of chainsaw, the higher is chain of high quality and the more durable it is.

The number of chain links (chain tails) is such a parameter by which the chain length can be determined. Т. е. you may call out the number of links or the chain size in inches when choosing. Some chain manufacturers specify the number of links in the item number and not the chain length. That is why it is better if you know both parameters of the saw chain when you buy it.

The following features are used to select a saw chain for a professional saw. Those who use household and semi-professional saws do not need to read our material further. We will go into the rest of the parameters only in passing, without going into depth.

There are different types of cutting links, we will touch upon the basic ones. cheaper (left picture) and chipper (right picture). In the picture we see what kind of shape a jigsaw profile has. In a cut, this profile reminds the number seven. This type is popularly called the “seven”. This profile is said to be designed for fast and quality saw work. The reason is that the entire work surface is straight and cuts evenly into the wood. This kind of the link is used mainly on professional saws. but it also has disadvantages. For example, it is quite difficult to sharpen such a chain, because even at a small deviation from the correct angle the work completely loses all the advantage of the chisel. The chipper type looks a lot like a sickle in section, which is why this profile is called the “sickle type” and “sickle”. The contact area of such a link is larger, which imposes higher loads and reduces the cutting performance. However, the chipper type of link is much easier to handle dirt, and when sharpening, you don’t have to be too precise with the angles.

It is very important to know the material of the saw chain cutting links. In general, high-alloy chrome-nickel steel is used in saw chains for the cutting teeth. That’s why when you buy a new chain you should check the manufacturing quality of the cutting elements and their sharpness. But if the tool is to be used in extremely hard, cold or very dirty materials, it is necessary to harden the teeth. For such purposes, there are variants with special carbide tips on the teeth. They have a higher resistance to wear. The tips are marked on the surface of each cutting tooth.

Depth of Cut and Chain Profile Height. The depth of cut is the profile height that indicates the depth of cut of the saw (it is worth adding that the height dimension also plays a role, but the depth of cut is the main parameter). The higher the profile, the deeper the chain “bites” and therefore the higher the performance. The smaller the profile, the finer the chips are removed, i.e. the chain does not cut deep into the wood. This depth can be adjusted by sharpening the stops on each cutter, but in the new chain these sizes are already of a certain type. There are two types of profile: 0.025″ (0.635 mm). low profile chain and 0.03″ (0.762 mm). high profile chain. This information must also be stated in the specification of the saw (often the brands of chains that fit are simply stated, and they already match the right size). The choice here is not great, this information is given more as an introduction. After all, when sharpening the chains yourself, you need to know the type of profile, so that when grinding the limiters to bring them into an appropriate form. But in essence both types are divided into professional and amateur chainsaw profiles. But there is a nuance here, too. Professional chainsaws do not always have high-profile chains, but chains for household use are always equipped with low-profile versions. And if with low-profile types everything is clear, then the high profile requires clarification. It makes the chain highly productive and therefore increases the vibration and aggressiveness of the chain, as already mentioned. And the strong vibrations will not let you work long hours in the forest. Here the developers have made some cunning, they take into account the chain pitch in order to keep the aggressiveness low. If the pitch is big (which causes vibration) and the profile is high (which also increases vibration), the saw will end up cutting fast, but it will not be comfortable for long periods of work. And this balance is kept by choosing not the two most effective settings, but by alternating between them. That is, if the pitch is big. the profile is low, if the pitch is smaller. the profile can be high. Such way of balancing lets chainsaw work less aggressively and more effectively at the same time. But to say which chain is better (with a bigger profile and smaller pitch or with a smaller profile and maximum pitch) is hard, it all depends on the wood, the working conditions and every case is different, you just have to try. Note that in professional saws when cutting big trees chains with big pitch and high profile are used, because the speed is very important here. It happens that the profile is made even larger than this, even 0.07″. (1,778 mm), but it is extremely rare and is often used on machine felling machines. In general, this whole point can be attributed to the professional use of serious chainsaws. For the average DIYer this is important for one reason only. when sharpening their chainsaw at home. You can cut the depth limiters only with sound knowledge, otherwise your domestic chainsaw will not cut at all and is bound to get tired from high loads.

When selecting a chain for your chainsaw you should pay attention to the following parameters:

saw chain cutting tooth design.

Four basic rules for working with a saw chain.

Please read the chain saw chain handling instructions. If you follow these rules, you will get the most out of your chainsaw chain, bar, and sprocket. Also, following these rules greatly improves safety when working with a chainsaw.

Major chain and bar malfunctions are usually due to improper chain tensioning. To tension the chain properly, turn off the chain saw engine and loosen the bar nuts. Grasp the guide bar by the toe and pull upward. Hold the bar this way the whole time you are adjusting the chain tension. Adjust the chain tensioning bolt on the chainsaw so that the lower link surfaces of the part of the chain under the bar easily touch the surface of the lower guide bar. Pull the bar toe up and tighten first the rear nut, then the front nut. Wear gloves when working. Never adjust tension immediately after use. Let the chain cool down. Check chain tension periodically during operation. If the tension is loose, stop working, let the chain cool down, and retighten it.

Without constant lubrication, increased friction, wear and tear on the bar, chain and sprocket will occur. Always fill the lubrication system with clean oil to ensure proper operation. Never fill up the chain saw’s lubrication system with used oil. Check the bar and chain oil supply as you work. Fill oil tank while refueling.

The size and shape of the kerf has a major impact on how the chainsaw chain works. For information on how to properly adjust the depth stop, see the “sharpening the chain” page.

A properly sharpened chain will cut well. If the chain is not sharpened, it will wear out all the parts of your chainsaw’s cutting attachment during use. Read how to sharpen your chain on the “sharpening the chain” page.

find, chain, chainsaw

A good quality chain can cut wood quickly and for a long time without any discomfort. Buying a chain on a chainsaw with the necessary parameters, you need to know its characteristics: the width of the shank, the thickness of the drive link, the length of the bar, the size of the pitch, the number of links. This all allows you to choose what you need for your chainsaw and get the best results with it. Incorrectly chosen chain can reduce productivity of work, or completely break a chainsaw.

Chain pitch. Table

Today, chains are divided into several subtypes depending on the pitch:

As you can see from the table, the chain pitch is marked as a regular number (3/4) not decimal. “0.375”. Number of links a small chainsaw with a bar length of 14 saws in a given chain. Such a division was caused by the similarity of the decimal values. “0,325” not “0,375”, because the difference of one digit created confusion when choosing a saw. That is why at one time it was decided to have two different designations: with decimal and not with fractions.

The pitch is stamped in the area of the special sawing depth limiter on each tooth.

The advantages of chains with a large pitch include:

However, you should consider that a wide kerf requires the use of a more powerful motor, which consequently significantly increases the resistance.

The advantages of fine pitch chains are:

Advantages are achieved due to the majority of teeth not small spacing.

All known classification of chains is formed by peculiarities of their marking based on the pitch, which is designed for certain needs is not made for a specific power of electrical equipment. For a better understanding of each type of pitch, they should be considered separately.

What information you need to know to find the chain size of your chainsaw?

Where can I find this information to find the chain size of a chainsaw chain?

These are usually listed in the chainsaw‘s manual. Otherwise, look in the box or in the manual of your chainsaw. This information is displayed in inches, the standard unit of measure. Sometimes they are listed in cm or even mm.

If you’ve thrown out or lost the instructions and packaging, here’s how to find out these dimensions to choose the right size.

Measure the length of the rail

Use a tape measure to measure the length of the old guide flat.

Determine the chain pitch

The pitch corresponds to the distance between the two drive links. Therefore, it is equal to half the distance between two of these links. Use a caliper and measure the distance between the three rivets. Then divide this value by two to get the pitch value. This value in millimeters must then be converted to inches. For your information, one inch is 2.54 cm.

Find the gauge measurement

You need to determine the thickness of the gauge. To do this, use a caliper and measure the thickness of the drive link (bottom link as an inverted triangle) or the thickness of the guide groove. Again, don’t forget to convert the resulting value to inches.

Calculate the number of links

No tools are required for this measurement. Just lay the chain out on a flat surface so that the links face each other. Then count the links one by one.

That’s it, you now have all the information you need to choose the right size chainsaw chain. You do not have to use your manufacturer’s brand. But in this case, make sure that the pitch, gauge, guide length and number of links are the same.
