Profile height. Saw chains are available as high or low profile depending on the height of the cutting edge above the guide bar surface. The first ones are used for professional purposes to get the best performance. The latter are installed on household and semi-professional chainsaws, because they are safer because of the increased support area of the cutting links and reduced thickness of the cut chips.

Depth of Cut. the clearance between the top edge of the tooth and the kerf to control the thickness of the cut. Patterns with 0.025” (0.635 mm) and 0.030” (0.762 mm) clearances are most common, less frequently. with gaps up to 0.070” (1.778 mm), but they are designed for professional saws. The depth of cut largely determines the performance of the chain, its cutting speed. The greater the clearance. the higher the performance. but in the pursuit of efficiency do not forget about vibration: chains with small cutting depths in the kerf move softer, less twitching. So manufacturers, in an effort to balance vibration and productivity, very often install cutters with a minimum depth of cut on chains with a large pitch, and vice versa.

Engine displacement is a characteristic of the chainsaw, and does not seem to have anything to do with the chain itself. But the various catalogs and instructions for chains quite often indicate the engine sizes for which they are designed. And these recommendations should be followed. a chain fitted to an overpowered motor will be exposed to significantly higher loads and, consequently, will fail prematurely.

Chain Components. Every saw chain is made up of three types of links: cutting links, drive links (shanks) and connecting links. The rivets ensure a permanently tight joint. Cutting link. is probably the most complex part of the saw chain and consists of actually two parts: the cutting depth limiter and the L-shaped cutter with a contour cutting angle.

The upper cutting edge of the link is always wider than the chain and bar, resulting in a relatively free cut and minimal cutting resistance. The prong works like a planer: the further the blade (upper cutting edge) is extended above the plane of the planer (cutting limiter). the thicker the chip.

Operating characteristics of a cutting link determine numerous factors, namely: sharpening angle of the upper edge and its working cutting angle, angle of a lateral edge (angle of attack) and the height of the cutting limiter. When sharpening, all these parameters must be kept very clearly, as even small changes can lead to negative consequences.

Depth of Cut and Chain Profile Height. And this balance is kept by choosing not the two most effective settings, but by alternating between them. That is, if the pitch is big. the profile is low, if the pitch is smaller. the profile can be high. Such way of balancing lets chainsaw work less aggressively and more effectively at the same time. But to say which chain is better (with a bigger profile and smaller pitch or with a smaller profile and maximum pitch) is hard, it all depends on the wood, the working conditions and every case is different, you just have to try.
