How to fit a chain onto a STIHL chain saw
The chain can become very stretched if used incorrectly or for long periods of time. This is because metal can become deformed over time. Very heavy wear and tear becomes a prerequisite for getting a new version of the performance, but it is possible to use the old one for a short period of time. Avoid sharp stretching can only be avoided by following the operating advice. The work requires:
Put on the stretched version of the performance is not difficult, but with the restoration there are quite a lot of difficulties, because the metal is characterized by high strength. In all these cases the main parts are riveted. The work is carried out as follows:
- The product is fastened in a squeeze.
- If the work is carried out using an angle grinder, in other words, the possibility that the surface will be damaged, because this tool is hard to keep under control.
- After shredding, the rivets are knocked out. There is no need to throw it away because of the ability to reintroduce.
- The chain manufacturers do not make spare parts that are needed for maintenance.
- Riveting is possible to make with your own hands, but the work is quite difficult.
- The product is divided into two parts. It is worth noting that the number of rails and the distance between them must remain constant.
When solving a problem with a long length, do not forget that a very small chain can no longer be tensioned. Apart from that, it is not recommended to apply oils to chain electric saw.
Chainsaw chain is the element that is subjected to the greatest stress and overheating. It can break, come off the guide bar, or just become dull from years of use. For timely service or replacement with the latest, you should know how to remove the chain from a chainsaw and put it back on without the help of others. The step-by-step method of these operations will be shown below.
How to tension a chainsaw chain correctly
Before we talk about how to properly tighten a chainsaw chain, it is important to outline a few simple rules. First, it should be serviced with the engine turned off and without risking starting it up accidentally. Second, all work should be carried out after the tool has cooled down. The reason is that a hot saw chain is longer than a cold saw chain. If you start to tension it, there is a risk of the bar pulling and deforming after it cools down.
Remember about safety! Wear protective gloves to prevent hands from being cut by the sharp chain links.
If the saw headset is recently installed and has little wear, there is no point in changing the chain. Just adjust its tension. What are the signs of insufficient tensioning?? The chain slackens at the bottom of the bar and slips sideways at the top. It causes misalignment while you are sawing and consequently affects the service life of the bar. it wears unevenly. In addition, insufficient tensioning of the chain increases the risk of the chain jumping off the bar and causes increased wear on the saw blade and drive sprocket. Because tightening the chain correctly is not the only way to avoid slack in the chain, it is also important not to overtighten it. Difficult to move the blade in the bar increases the load on the motor and other working parts of the tool. Try to turn the chain around the bar by hand. If it slips easily, you need to loosen it.
Important to know! A new chain most often needs tensioning because it tends to stretch at the beginning of operation. Check tensioning at all times and adjust if necessary. This will extend its life and reduce wear on other important parts of the saw.
Install a new chain on the bar
To replace the sawblade, you need to loosen the bar and remove the old chain. To do this, loosen the fasteners on the cover that holds the saw unit, remove the chain from the sprocket, and remove the accessories. The new chain must be the same size as the old one. Put it on the guide bar in the pitch with the drive links. Attach the free end of the chain to the sprocket. Be sure to check that the links fit into the slot along the entire length of the headset. Fit the bar on the pin where it is attached to the tool. Close this assembly with the cover and fasten the bar. Use screws or a rotary knob for this.
Tip: In order for the bar to wear evenly, it is recommended to turn it upside down. swap the top and bottom parts. You can orient yourself by the inscription on the tire. For example, if the letters have been positioned correctly, when you change it, it should be upside down.
The instructions to the tool should describe how to properly tighten the chain of a chainsaw. But it’s not always possible to use it. That’s why we’ll show you the sequence of steps for tensioning chain saws with different types of tensioning tools.
- Traditional chain tensioning with a tool. You will need a standard wrench, which is usually included with the chainsaw. On one side it has a working part for unscrewing the nuts, and on the other. a slotted screwdriver. First loosen the nuts on the cover that covers the mounting location of the tire. Then put a screwdriver in the slot and turn it to tension the chain. Do not force it. it’s better to tension the chain gradually. Make a few turns. control the tension with your hands by pulling the chain at the bottom of the bar. After you finish the adjustment, tighten the nuts on the cover.
- Tool-less chain tensioning. This way is easier and faster. There is a thumbwheel on the side of the cover to tension the chain. By turning it, you control the reduction of slack in the chain.
How to know if a chainsaw chain is tightened properly? It should not slacken at the bottom, and when you pull it back, the inner cogs should not protrude more than 4 to 6 inches out of the bar groove. It’s important to make sure the chain is not overtightened. To do so, turn it by hand along the bar in the direction of rotation, just as you would do with a saw. If it is easy to turn, you have done everything right. It is considered better to under tighten the chain than to over tighten it. You will find it out as you go along and will quickly get it right. But a blockage on the saw is not immediately apparent and has a detrimental effect on the engine. When you do your own maintenance, you’ll know how to tension the chain correctly without risking damage to the chainrings. Once you have achieved optimum tensioning, you can fix all fasteners and turn the tool on. Let it run idle without load. Then turn off the engine and make sure the chain is still intact and tensioned. You can now start working with it.

How to fit a bar and chain to your chainsaw?
It’s not uncommon for chainsaws to run into problems if the bar is not installed correctly. You can tell by the rattling, vibration, and low performance of the saw during cutting. The guide bar is fastened to the body between the outer plate, the bar is secured with a special bolt.
Popularly referred to as the “engine assembly”, this part consists of the drive sprocket and locking bolts. Simply install the guide bar and the chain saw together. remove all protective covers, unscrew the clamping screws by a third of the length and fit the bar. Then tighten all nuts tightly, twist tensioner with special lever.
Installing the guide bar on STIHL and Husqvarna
STIHL chain saw models may vary in the assembly process. A step-by-step guide:
- Open the wing nut, remove the chain sprocket cover. Turn it on the tire all the way to the right.
- Place the chain on the bar, starting from the bar nose, the cutting tooth on the top side must point straight ahead.
- Put the assembled guide bar on the chainsaw and pull the assembly onto the sprocket. Slide the guide bar onto the shoulder bolt. Close the cover by getting the pins into the holes provided by the manufacturer.
- Turn wing nut until sprocket cover touches motor housing.
- Rotate the clamping bolt forward, the drive links should engage in the bar grooves. Tighten the wing nut fully.
At the end of your work, check the tension; if the headset does not move well, adjust the tension with the nut. Apply the chain brake before starting.
Algorithm for installing the guide bar and chain for Husqvarna saws is almost identical. The main difference is that most models have two wing nuts instead of one to control the tension and the positioning of the headset against the body. There is seldom a separate adjustment lever on the outer sprocket guard, so you should adjust the tension only with the bolts.
Important! Before operating the chainsaw, the owner’s manual should be read carefully. It details all the steps to set up and assemble the tool.
Why is the chain flying?
If you’ve been wondering why the chain comes off your chainsaw, then there are some problems in the mechanism. There are three main reasons for this: bar malfunction, chain lengthening and a loose sprocket. We will discuss each possible cause of failure in detail.

The chain must be tensioned correctly so that it can run freely on the bar by hand. The classic type of tensioner is used to adjust the tensioner, which is used in budget-priced tools. This tensioner is a threaded bolt, and the adjusting component is either a classic or side-mounted.
Quality chainsaw models are equipped with adjustment mechanisms whereby tensioning can be done with a single movement of the lever or by turning the adjustment dial. If a tensioner is used to tension the chain, the tightening torque is locked with a locknut. Otherwise, the chain is tensioned by locking the bar in a given position with the cap. Both methods are designed to hold the product securely in position.
Another way to position the tensioning screw
Important to know! It is strictly forbidden to adjust the chain tension on a chainsaw when it is hot. The product must be cool or the procedure will not be completed correctly.
About how to properly tighten the chain of a chainsaw, it is necessary to learn in more detail, because this moment is very important, the performance of the tool and human safety depends on it.

How to fit the chain to your chainsaw
The chainsaw chain is the element that is subjected to the highest stress and overheating. the chain can be cracked, come off the guide bar or just blunted from prolonged use. For preventive maintenance or replacement with a new one, it is important to know how to remove and reinstall the saw chain on a chain saw by yourself. A step-by-step algorithm for these operations will be shown below.
Many chain saw users, even the most experienced ones, have had to deal with the problem of the chain jumping off the guide bar in the course of their work. The most common cause is insufficient tensioning or wear of the chain.
In 80% of the cases, the stretched chain links run off the teeth of the drive sprocket and, under the centrifugal force, the chain falls off the guide bar. Sometimes the problem is caused by wrong sprocket position in relation to its pivot or a chain saw bar that is not securely fastened to the chain saw.
There are basically 3 main things that cause chain to get stretched: low quality metal, excessive tension and use of low quality oil. We also recommend that you read about what chain oil to use for your chain saw, and about STIHL and Husqvarna oils.
How to tension the chain on a chainsaw correctly?
Well-known brands produce garden tools so that even an inexperienced beginner can install the chain on a chainsaw. For this purpose, practically each model has a side tensioner that allows both to put a chain on a chainsaw and to tighten an already installed headset. Thanks to this mechanism, chain tensioning on a chainsaw can be done with your own hands. In most cases, saw manufacturers provide free access to the tensioner, which greatly simplifies the replacement of the drive roller and other parts of the mechanism.
Installing the chain on a chainsaw should only be done when the motor and the guide bar of the garden tool have cooled down completely. If this requirement is ignored, the cold saw element on the hot bar can deform. over, it often happens even when a chain for a chainsaw is mounted.
In order to put the chain on the chainsaw correctly, it is necessary to observe the following order of actions:
- The first thing to do is to make sure that the key lock is engaged and that it can not be accidentally switched on. Also, the owner of the saw will need to engage the inertia brake in advance;
- Next is to remove the protective plastic cover located on the right side of the saw and remove the screws;
- Then it will be necessary to determine which side to put the chain on the chainsaw. Manufacturers advise to install the headset in such a way that the cutter, located at the top of the installed bar, was exactly directed directly in the direction of the rotation of the chain;
- After that, you should put on protective gloves made of thick material and start slowly rotating the headset on the guide bar;
- If the operator finds that the saw element being used is sagging, it must be tightened. To do this, rotate the tensioner until the sawing part is tensioned;
- Then you need to loosen the screws that are designed to mount the factory tire as standard;
- Then insert the guide bar and tighten the screws.
Finally it’s just a matter of checking the tensioning of the saw element once again. The chain should not sag if installed correctly and, at the same time, it should not be stretched too much. It is best to have the part sag by about 0.5 cm when pressing it with the index finger of your hand.
Why is the chain slipping and why does it come off?
If you wonder why the chain on your chainsaw comes off, it means there is something wrong with the mechanism. There are three main reasons for this malfunction: the bar is not working properly, the chain is stretched and the sprocket is loose. Let’s look at each of the possible causes in more detail.
Problems with the guide bar
If there is a problem with the tire, it is almost always the tension in the chain that is loose. Usually this is a problem at the tire’s mounting point.
This is the location in the groove between the outer plate that is on the chain guard and the inner plate that is on the motor housing. The outer casing with the bar is secured with a bolt. This attachment is called the “engine knot”. The drive sprocket and the bar mount are protected by special covers.
If the fixing bolts are loose, the bar will start to move or vibrate. If the bar is serviceable, the chain tension should be normal. After tensioning, it will go at least five working days without tensioning. So you need to tighten the bolts that hold the tire.
Did you know? In the town of Nora, which is located in Canada, chainsaw wood carving is highly developed. All the streets and squares of this town are decorated with products created by chainsaw masters.
To figure out how to tighten the chain on a chainsaw, you first need to find and put down the chain brake. The tensioning screw is next to the bar, turn it until the chain is tensioned on the bar. Then pull the chain in a clockwise direction. If it doesn’t move, you need to loosen it a little by turning the tensioning screw in the opposite direction.
The chain is stretched
If your chain on your chain saw is slack, it is an indication of a defective mechanism, one of the possibilities is that the chain itself is worn.
Over time, the metal deforms and the chain becomes 0.5-1 cm longer. The best way to fix this problem is to buy a new chain, but there is a way to get the old chain back to work. Experts say that it is very difficult and almost impossible, but we will tell you how it can be done at home.
How to Change the Chain and Bar on a Stihl MS170 Chainsaw | L&S Engineers
For this we will need:
A regular chainsaw chain is made of strong steel, so it’s hard to break it loose. The chain should be loosened on the inside of the rivet, which serves as a connecting mechanism.
To begin with, the chain should be fixed in a vise, and then the protruding part should be gradually ground down. Grind with a file or file. it is not recommended to use an angle grinder, as there is a risk of damaging the side parts of the links. After grinding, the rivets are knocked out with a bead. Do not discard the rivet that you have punched out. You might not be able to find a replacement. Petrol saw manufacturers do not make separate parts for the chain because they do not expect customers to be able to repair the chain themselves. You might not be able to make a new rivet yourself, so reattach the old rivet.
To shorten the chain, you have to split it in two places. But remember, the number and spacing of guide lugs on the inside of the chain must match the drive sprocket.
Important! When welding a link, set current to minimum. Use the smallest diameter electrode so you don’t hit the adjacent links.
After removing one or more links (depending on how stretched the chain is), the chain can be connected. We connect on the old rivets, while pressing them tightly on the sides.
Next we need a welding machine. A rivet must be welded to the sides of the link. After that, use a file to grind off the excess that was created when working on the weld. The chain can be considered as working again.
The drive sprocket is loose
One possibility for a sagging chain on your unit is a problem with the drive sprocket. Most of the time it happens because the star is not properly secured. Now we will tell you how to fix the sprocket correctly and then put the chain on the chainsaw.
First you need to remove the motor guard. Then remove the spark plug cover, pull out the air filter. Then use a special wrench to unscrew the spark plug. In its place, a special stopper is placed, which fixes the piston in a certain position. Using a special wrench (you can use a universal wrench for an angle grinder) turn the clutch disk clockwise until the piston reaches its highest position. If you look through the spark plug hole, the piston should stay underneath. As a stopper you can use a thick rope, it is better to fold it several times. After locking, you can clamp the drive sprocket by turning the clutch disc counterclockwise.
Did you know? Druzhba chainsaw got its name in honor of three hundredth anniversary of Ukraine and Russia connection in 1954.
After clamping it is necessary to do everything in the reverse order, that is to assemble the chainsaw. The chain is put on the bar and it must hit the drive sprocket that holds it in place. The bar is put in special holes for fastening and bolted. Then you put on the cover.
