Chains for chain saws

The chain is an important attribute of any gasoline or electric chainsaw. The efficiency of the tool, as well as the amount of fuel it consumes, depends on the condition and condition of this part. It is often difficult for a beginner to determine which chainsaw chain is better. You need to know the basic characteristics of the chainsaw and how to install and maintain it.

Today’s market is crowded with many kinds of sawing elements. They are divided by their characteristics and are divided into several categories.

According to the type of sawing direction, we distinguish between the following types of parts

  • transverse. the saw headset of this type is distinguished by the effect of smoothing vibration and reducing the load on the engine of the tool. This makes the saw easier and more comfortable to use;
  • Longitudinal. parts of this type are distinguished by high performance.

Another important characteristic is the pitch of the chainsaw chain.

According to this factor, the saw shank is divided into such types:

  • 0,25 or 1/4 “. these parts are equipped with one-handed household saws;
  • 0,325 or 3/8″. elements with this pitch are most often equipped with semi-professional tools;
  • 0.404 or 3/4″, suitable for concrete or aerated concrete.

As a rule, the pitch directly affects the performance of the set.

Correct Way To Adjust The Chain Tension On Your Chainsaw

The third characteristic is the thickness of the shanks. In order to install the element, it is necessary that this parameter coincide with the dimensions of the groove in the bar of the tool. This will keep the headset firmly fixed to the bar and minimize the risk of it accidentally sliding off.

The following types of parts are on sale:

  • Chains that have shank thicknesses of 1.1 mm are used for household appliances;
  • elements with a shank thickness of 1.3 mm. this type of headset is used to equip semi-professional chainsaws;
  • products with shank thickness of 1.5 mm. are used for regular equipment of small, but powerful household tools;
  • Parts with shank thicknesses of 1.6 to 2 mm. only fit heavy-duty industrial saws.

Many experts also divide the working bodies by the possibility of their installation on chainsaws with self-sharpening function. On the basis of this feature you can also encounter on the market the self-sharpening set or the chain, which must be sharpened manually.

Reasons for early failure of saw chains

chain, correctly

The accelerated lengthening of the part occurs during the running-in phase and in the last quarter of the service life. During these time intervals the harness needs special attention and careful maintenance.

  • The reason for chain stretching can be bad material quality of a budget model, inappropriate crowning and excessive wear of the drive sprocket, malfunction or ineffective lubrication system.
  • To a large extent, chain saw chain performance also depends on the condition of the bar and drive sprocket, the quality of the chain oil and performance of the lubrication system, and the timely and correct sharpening of the cutting edges.

According to professional sawyers, the durability of the chainsaw is affected by the operator’s operating style and the level of stress the chainsaw is subjected to. Budget chains are prone to chain stretching to a greater extent, more expensive brand name ranges do not have any technical or performance-related problems.

Tensioned chain

Any functional changes in the chain will result in poor tool performance and injuries during operation.

Check regularly to make sure there is no metal deformation or stretching beyond 1 cm.

If this problem still occurs, you need to buy a new riveting pattern or adjust the old one.

Separate the chain links on the machine or fix them in a vise, grind off the rivets with a saw and beat them with a beard (using a grinder is not recommended).

Remove 1-2 links depending on how tight the chain is. Then put all the elements in place, insert the rivets and use a special rivet tool to hit them with a hammer. We recommend the use of a welder for reliability. At the end of the job, grind off the excess and wrap with a fine saw.

Tools needed for the work

When starting riveting, the first thing to do is to remove the link from the chain, this will require rivets to be riveted out. You will need an anvil, hammer, thin bead, vise, angle grinder with grinding wheel or emery wheel for riveting. These tools do not allow high-quality work, but everyone can find them. A more cultured and gentle way, to remove rivets with a special puncher.

There are several designs of punches, let’s talk about the most popular.

Rivet Punch

Puncher is a machine that is used to remove rivets.

It is mechanical, working on the principle of the press. It comes with a special anvil, in which grooves are selected to install the headset with different spacing. There are also interchangeable tips that are used to squeeze out the rivet.

Important: rivet sizes are different for different types of chains, so when buying a riveting machine, make sure that the kit has several tips that are used for different types of chains.

We suggest watching a video that shows how to rivet a saw chain with a mechanical punch.

After the chain is riveted, you need to remove the old link, install a new one, and rivet. A riveting-rolling machine is used for this purpose. It is electric, so it costs much more than a punching machine.

Riveting machine

The machine has a geared motor with high torque.

It is used for riveting and rolling of the set with spacing from 1/4″ to 0.404″. Cutting depths of chains that can be riveted with this machine range from 1.1 mm, to 2 mm (0.043″. 0.080″). Special rotating inserts and anvils for various types are supplied with the machine. Inserts and anvils are marked. The “A” marking means that the inserts are designed for 3/8″ and 0.404″ set spacing. “B” for 1/4″ and 0.325″.

The machine works as follows. Saw chain with new link and rivets is installed in guide inserts. Repair link with rivets installed in it is pressed by the working roller to the anvil, then the motor is turned on and the roller begins to rotate, gradually crushing the rivet, at this point, the machine operator slightly increases the pressure roller force, tightening the adjusting screw. For clarity, we suggest watching a video about the work of the riveting-rolling machine.

Using such a machine for riveting at home is not profitable, because. к. it is expensive. If you do not need to rivet regularly, you can do without it. Consider how to shorten the chain of a chainsaw with your own hands without the use of expensive machines. Start by riveting and removing a link.

The advantage of the machine is that the rivets riveted with its help are of almost the same quality as those riveted in the factory.

How to tension a chainsaw chain correctly

Before we talk about how to properly tighten the chain of a chainsaw, it is important to outline a few simple rules. First, maintenance should be done with the engine off and without risk of accidental starting. Secondly, all work is carried out after the tool has cooled. The reason is that a hot saw chain is longer than a cold saw chain. If you start to tension it, there is a risk that the guide bar will bind and deform once it has cooled.

Be aware of safety! Wear protective gloves so you don’t cut your hands with the sharp chain links.

If the bar is newly installed and there is very little wear, there is no point in changing the chain. It is sufficient to adjust the tension in the chain. What are the signs of insufficient tension? The chain is sagging at the bottom of the bar and slipping sideways at the top. It causes it to twist when you are sawing and consequently affects the service life of the bar. it wears unevenly. In addition, insufficient tensioning of the chain increases the risk of the chain jumping off the bar and causes increased wear on the saw blade and drive sprocket. Because tightening the chain correctly is not enough to remove slack from the chain, it is also important not to overtighten it. A tight running of the blade in the bar contributes to increased stress on the engine and other working units of the tool. Try to turn the chain around the bar by hand. If this is difficult, it must be loosened.

Important to know! A new chain most often needs tensioning, because it tends to stretch at the beginning of use. Check the tension of the chain at all times and readjust as necessary. This will extend its life and reduce wear on other important parts of the saw.

Installing the new chain on the bar

To change the saw blade, you must loosen the guide bar and remove the old chain. To do this, loosen the fasteners on the cover that holds the saw head, remove the chain from the sprocket and remove the bar. The new chain must have the same dimensions as the old one. Put it on the bar in the guide bar slot with the driving links. The free end of the chain is attached to the sprocket. Check that the chainrings fit into the groove over the entire length of the bar. Install the bar on the pin where it is attached to the tool. Close this assembly with the cover and secure the bar. This is done using screws or a rotary knob.

Tip: to get an even wear of the tire it is recommended to turn it upside down. to swap the upper and lower parts. A guide is given by the inscription on the tire. For example, if the letters have been positioned correctly, when replacing them, the lettering should be upside down.

The instruction to the tool should describe how to properly tighten the chain of a chainsaw. But it’s not always possible to use it. So we’ll cover the sequence of operations when servicing saws with different types of chain tension.

  • Traditional chain tightening with a tool. You’ll need a standard wrench, which is usually included with the chainsaw. it has a working part for loosening the nuts on one side and a slotted screwdriver on the other. The first thing to do is to loosen the nuts on the cover that secures the tire. Then put a screwdriver in the special slot and rotate it to tension the chain. Don’t overdo it. it’s better to tension the chain gradually. Make a few revolutions. check the tension by hand by pulling the chain at the bottom of the bar. When you’re done with the adjustment, you have to tighten the nuts on the cover.
  • No tool is needed to tension the chain. This way is easier and faster. There is a tensioning screw on the side of the cover to tension the chain. By turning it, you control the amount of slack in the chain.

How do you know your chainsaw chain is tightened properly?? It should not be loose at the bottom and when you pull it back the teeth inside the bar should be no more than 4-6mm out of the guide bar groove. It is important to make sure the chain is not over tightened. To do this, rotate it by hand along the bar in the direction of rotation, just as you would do with a saw. If it’s easy, you’ve done everything right. It is considered better to under tighten the chain than to over tighten it. This is readily apparent and can be adjusted in the process. But the difficult movement of the sawing equipment is not immediately noticeable and has a detrimental effect on the motor. When you take care of your own tools you will know how to tension the chain correctly without risking damage to the chain. Once you’ve got the right tension, you can lock all the fasteners in place and start the machine. Let it idle for a while without load. Then turn off the engine and check that the chain is still intact. You can start working with it now.

Why the chain comes off, why is it coming off?

If you’re wondering why the chain on your chain saw is coming off, it means there’s something wrong with the mechanism. There are three main causes of this malfunction: improper operation of the bar, chain stretching and poorly secured sprocket. Let’s look at each of the possible causes.

Tire Trouble

If there is a problem with the tire, it is almost always the chain tension that is loose. This problem usually occurs where the tire is attached.

This location is in the slot between the outer plate, which is on the chain guard, and the inner plate, which is on the motor housing. The housing, along with the tire, is secured with a bolt. This attachment is called the “engine knot”. The drive sprocket and the tire mounting are protected by special covers.

If the securing bolts come loose, the tire begins to move or vibrate. If the tire is in good condition, the chain should be properly tensioned. After tensioning, it will run for at least five working days without tensioning. So you need to get a good grip on the bolts that hold the tire in place.

Did you know? In the town of Nore, which is in Canada, chainsaw wood carving is highly developed. All the streets and squares of this town are decorated with products created by chainsaw craftsmen.

To figure out how to tension the chain on a chainsaw, we first need to find and put down the chain brake. The tensioning screw is next to the bar and is turned until the chain is tensioned on the bar. Then pull the chain clockwise. If it doesn’t move, you have to loosen it a little by turning the tensioning screw in the opposite direction.

The chain is stretched

If you have a sagging chain on the chain saw, it indicates a malfunction of some mechanism, one of the options is the wear of the chain itself.

Over time, the metal deforms and the chain becomes 0.5 to 1 cm longer. The best way to fix this malfunction is to buy a new chain, but there is a way to get the old one back to work. Experts say it’s very tricky and nearly impossible, but we’ll tell you how you can do it at home.

For this we will need:

A regular chainsaw chain is made of strong steel, so it’s hard to disconnect. The chain must be separated on the inside of the rivet, which serves as the connecting mechanism.

First you need to fix the chain in a vice and then gradually grind away the protruding part. Use a file or file to grind. Do not use an angle grinder, as there is a risk to damage the side parts of the links. After sharpening rivets are knocked out with a bead. Do not throw the rivet away. You might not be able to find a replacement. Petrol saw manufacturers do not make separate parts for the chain, because they do not expect customers to be able to repair the chain themselves. You probably won’t be able to make a new rivet yourself, so you’ll have to install the old one.

To shorten the chain, you have to split it in two places. But remember that the number of guide lugs on the inside of the chain and the distance between them should match the drive sprocket.

Important! Set current to minimum when welding a link. Choose the smallest diameter electrode so you don’t hit the neighboring links.

After removing one or more links (depending on how stretched the chain is) the chain can be connected. We connect on the old rivets, while pressing them tightly on the sides.

Next, we need a welder. The rivet must be welded to the sides of the link. After that, use a file to grind off the excess that was created when working with the weld. The chain can be considered as operational again.

The drive sprocket is loose

One possibility for a slack chain on your machine is a problem with the drive sprocket. This is frequently caused by a loose sprocket. Now we will tell you how to attach the sprocket correctly and then put the chain on the chainsaw.

The first thing to do is to remove the motor cover. Next, remove the spark plug cover, pull out the air filter. Then use a special wrench to unscrew the spark plug. In its place, a special stopper is put, which fixes the piston in a certain position. Using a special wrench (you can use a universal wrench for the angle grinder) we rotate the clutch disk clockwise until the piston reaches the extreme upper position. When viewed through the spark plug hole, the piston should remain at the bottom. A thick rope can be used as a stopper and it is better to fold it several times. After locking, you can clamp the drive sprocket by turning the clutch disc counterclockwise.

Did you know? The Druzhba chainsaw got its name in honor of the three hundredth anniversary of the union of Ukraine and Russia in 1954.

After clamping it is necessary to do everything in the reverse order, that is to assemble the chainsaw. The chain should be put on the bar and hit the drive sprocket to retain it. The tire is put into the special mounting holes and bolted down. Then a guard is put in place.

Resharpening the chain of an electric saw with your own hands

It is best to entrust the restoration of the cutting set to professionals from the service center. If there is no such a possibility, you can sharpen the chain of electric saw by yourself.

To do this, the gardener will need a set that includes:

  • A round file with reference lines marked on it;
  • A flat file needed to correct the depth stop;
  • A calibration tool;
  • a mandrel for finding the right angle.

While sharpening the teeth with a round file, the operator must always make sure that its surface protrudes over the teeth of the chain by no more than 1/5 of its length. It’s better to mark the first tooth to be sharpened beforehand, to avoid sharpening it again later. All movements of the operator must be strictly in one direction.

After processing each prong, you need to move on to restoring its limiter. To do this, hold the calibration tool against its edge. As a result the end piece should be close to the limiter. Otherwise, the limiter will need to be trimmed with a flat file. So the calibrator must be perpendicular to the guide bar of the electric saw.

Besides special kits there are also self-sharpening cutter sharpening machines available on the market. They are divided into manual and electric. A simpler device stands out handheld devices, which resemble a jigsaw or frame. To sharpen the chain with their help, the user must clamp the bar in a special vise. this will comfortably process each of the worn teeth.

Electric machines can only be used in garages or other rooms with access to electricity. Among the advantages of these devices stand out the possibility of sharpening different types of cutting tools, precise adjustment of the pitch and depth of cut, as well as the choice of the correct angle of cut.

To work on an electric machine, the gardener must sharpen the first cutting tooth. After that, set the resharpening parameters for the first tooth and start sharpening the remaining teeth.

Repair and maintenance of chainsaws chains

Repair of this constructional part of the power tool is usually not very difficult. Its features, as well as care requirements, are outlined in the owner’s manual for the saw itself. Important:

The latter circumstance can be omitted due to the fact that some of the new models are self-sharpening.

With original spare parts, cutting chain repair has long ceased to be a problem. And it doesn’t matter if you plan to replace the drive roller or sprocket.

It is impossible to say which chainsaw chain is better. After all, the range of chains, as well as the requirements of the customers, is constantly changing.

Diamond and pobedite chains for chain saws are in great demand, making high-quality cuts not only in wood, but also in concrete, aerated concrete, bricks and other material structures. In spite of high price and rather complicated maintenance cycle carbide chains more often become a choice of professionals. After all, a chain with pobedite tips is not afraid of any dirt and easily cuts through metal parts. nails, shavings, which often get in the way of cutting

Deciding to buy a new chain, you should understand one thing. high price is not always a guarantee of quality. Besides, those are the blades that are most often forged. That’s why it’s better to purchase original headsets directly in a store, checking the documentation accompanying the product and the availability of the warranty card.
