Preparing the fuel mix
Two-stroke engines run on a gasoline-oil mixture. The primary cause of malfunction is improperly proportioned fuel mixture or complete lack of oil in the gasoline. When preparing the fuel mixture, use special oil for two-stroke engines marked “For gardening equipment”. Do not use oil for boat engines, motorcycles, etc. The gasoline/oil ratio may vary depending on the engine model, oil grade, and your power tool manufacturer’s recommendations. A 50:1, 32:1 or 24:1 mix ratio is used for two-stroke engines.
Under conditions of insufficient lubrication or pure gasoline operation, an engine can run for quite a long time. A characteristic symptom of prolonged use of pure gasoline is increased vibration and irregular engine sound. Piston and cylinder develop shallow scoring across the entire side surface height. Piston ring damage may occur.
Lack of lubrication causes transfer of metal from the piston to the cylinder wall and engine seizure.
Excessive oil in the fuel mixture leads to coking of the piston ring and formation of heavy fouling on the piston.
Continuous operation of the engine with the carburettor choke closed for a long time may also cause intensive sooting of the piston.
Another sign of an engine with excessive amount of oil in the fuel mixture is the presence of sludge on the spark plug and heavy coking of the muffler screen, which is manifested by the loss of engine power during operation.
Let’s look at some indications that the user has not followed the Operator’s Manual recommendations regarding improper fuel use and mower storage.
If dirty gasoline is used to prepare the fuel mixture, dirty deposits will be present in the carburetor.
The fuel filter in the gas tank will also be contaminated if dirty fuel is used.
An indicator of an extended storage of lawnmower with fuel is the oxidation of the carburettor components. If the engine is running and the regular brake is released, the vehicle may be braked for more time and the engine may be braked for longer. There may also be tar deposits on carburetor parts.
Gasoline tool manufacturers recommend the following proportions when preparing the fuel mixture:
Use oil marked “For garden equipment. Do not use oil for boat engines, motorcycles, etc.д.
Use clean, fresh, unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 92.
Do not mix gasoline and oil together unless specifically instructed to do so. Use the special container to mix gasoline and oil. Do not mix gasoline and oil directly in the fuel tank.
Do not use old fuel mix that has been stored for more than 30 days.
When preparing your lawnmower for long-term storage:- drain all fuel from the fuel tank;- run the engine until the fuel is completely out;- unscrew the spark plug, pour 30 ml of high-quality engine oil for 2-stroke or 4-stroke engines into the cylinder, pull the starter handle so oil is evenly distributed inside the engine, and install the spark plug in place. Before starting the engine after long periods of storage, unscrew the spark plug and drain the oil from the cylinder.
What to choose oil to fill the grass trimmer or types of lubricants
Grass trimmers and lawnmowers are powered by two-stroke engines, which have a simplified design. Rarely, but there are trimmer models with 4-stroke engines that run on pure gasoline. Power units of two-stroke type do not have a compartment for pouring engine oil (oil sump), due to which the weight of the tool and reduce their cost. If the rotating parts of the motor will not be lubricated, then eventually they will quickly fail. To prevent this, the grass trimmer is not filled with pure gasoline, but with a mixture of oil. What oil to dilute with gasoline for the grass trimmer?
To begin with, let’s remember or find out what types of oils by chemical composition are available:
- Mineral fluids. designed for low-power, air-cooled machinery. This is the cheapest type of engine lubricant
- Semi-synthetics. they are used for machinery that are air- and water-cooled
- Synthetic. suitable for all types of engines with different types of cooling. They do not require frequent replacement, and this type of lubricant is several times more expensive than mineral and semi-synthetic
From the above, it follows that for grass trimmer oil with any composition. mineral, synthetic and semi-synthetic. Oils with different chemical composition differs in price, so when buying should be based on the recommendations of the tool manufacturer. The instructions indicate advisory information about which types of oil are best to use. If it is a TC-W3 standard, then it is not so important what composition the substance should have. In this case, you can dilute mineral, semi-synthetic and synthetic with gasoline.
This is interesting! The main thing when choosing oil is not to get caught on a fake, since today you can very often find different types of lubricating compositions for two-stroke engines, which consist mainly of low-quality petroleum products.

What are the characteristics of a chainsaw?
If you have a cottage or a house in the countryside, you need a chainsaw. Gardening work can be handled with a chainsaw. Its power is low, but it is enough to remove old tree branches, cut firewood and boards. This saw does not have much weight or size. If you need to cut down trees in your yard or if you’re planning construction work, a semi-professional chainsaw is the way to go. You should not use it for more than 8 hours a day. Professional chainsaw has high power and can work up to 16 hours in a row. High-strength materials are used for making such saws, and use requires certain skills. Professional chainsaws are used in felling on an industrial scale and for other similar work.
All of these types of saws vary in both power and weight. If you are not planning on doing a lot of regular work, it is best to limit your use to a regular chainsaw, which weighs much less and is therefore easier to handle. Professional saws, on the other hand, are rated at up to 6 kW and therefore weigh more. The correct choice depends on the thickness and toughness of the material to be cut.
How to mix (thin) gasoline and oil for 2 t engines.
To summarize. Use an oil for your brand-name equipment that is designed or recommended by the manufacturer of that equipment. For the STIHL FS 55 brushcutter, for example, STIHL HP oil (see STIHL Instruction Manual for use with STIHL brushcutters). Figure 1a) or STIHL HP SUPER, use Husqvarna HP oil (Figure 1b) or Husqvarna LS oil for the Husqvarna 128R brushcutter. For 2.Do not use 4-stroke motor oil on conventional 4-stroke engines. e.g. 10W30, SAE 30, etc.д.
Figure 1 a-Husqvarna oil (left), STIHL oil (right)
Never use 2-stroke oil designed for water-cooled engines, as these oils are designed to operate at lower temperatures.
You must follow the proportions of oil and gasoline for the fuel mixture specified by the manufacturers in the owner’s manual. The ratio commonly quoted by Chinese manufacturers is 1 part oil to 25 parts gasoline, and 1:50 for STIHL and Husqvarna. When preparing a small volume of mixture (up to 1 liter), it is very important to carefully measure the amount of oil included in the mixture. Even small miscalculations in the amount of oil can lead to serious inconsistencies in the mixture. In these cases a medicine syringe may be used for exact dosing. It is necessary to prepare fuel mixture in a clean container designed specifically for this purpose. (refer to. figure 2)
I do not recommend to use improvised plastic bottles and canisters, because petrol can dissolve plastics and all this “slurry” gets into a fuel tank and causes failure of carburetor.
Plastic canisters designed for gasoline are always marked with a.flame sign. It is very convenient to use a fuel canister with a spill-free fuel system (see Hopper Safety Data Sheet). Figure 3). The spill-free refueling system has a valve that prevents fuel from spilling when the tank is full.

What kind of petrol to fill up
Gasoline for grass trimmer should be chose unleaded with the tact number 92 or 95. Practice shows that gasoline AI-80 can cause damage to the device, which is doubtful economy. The fuel must be fresh, i.e. it must not be stored for more than 60 days after purchase.
Other factors influence the quality of fuel, e.g. the use of special lawnmower lubricant and diluting it in a separate container. It is also recommended to use special jerrycans designed for gasoline storage.
It is recommended to buy unleaded gasoline to operate the garden equipment. Otherwise there is a risk of engine failure. Manufacturers advise fuel with an octane number no lower than AI-90, better AI-92 or AI-95. Consult the instruction manual for your tool to determine the proper oil for your particular application. At the gas station, fill the canister with the amount of fuel needed. Metal containers are recommended: they reduce the generation of static electricity from friction and increase operational safety.
Buy branded oils for two-stroke engines, preferably API-TB or API-TC. The manufacturer should state the recommended brands in the tool’s instruction manual. Also note their composition. Mineral oils are suitable for use in warm weather. Synthetic is better, it is less viscous and can be used even in freezing temperatures. Semi-synthetic is a mineral with improved qualities, versatile for any season. Check the temperature rating on the package. Also pay attention to the volume. It is not the proportion of gasoline and chain saw oil that is important, but how much fuel mixture you will need for one filling and how often you will work with the tool. If you have a grass trimmer or chain saw, and you use one or the other tool several times a week, it makes sense to buy a large 3 to 5 liter canister of oil. For several mowing operations during the gardening season, a bottle of 1 liter is sufficient.
Mixing oil with gasoline
When you start working with a tool, the question always arises how much oil to add to gasoline for a chainsaw or grass trimmer. It is important to remember that for two-stroke engines the ratio is 1:50, t.е. 100 ml of oil per 5 liters of fuel. Why it is important to follow the proportions? Excess oil causes soot on pistons and spark plugs, and the lack of oil reduces the lubricating properties of the fuel mixture, which leads to scuffing of the piston group and increases the risk of engine failure.
It is easiest to observe the proportions of gasoline and oil for a chainsaw, using measuring containers. They have a scale with markings that are easy to follow. Make sure the container is clean before pouring in gasoline and oil. Do not get any water or dirt in it. this will affect the quality of the fuel mixture. Add gasoline at the proper level, then add oil at the correct level. Tilt the container several times to mix it. Liquids will mix quickly and the mixture will get a homogeneous color, e.g. green or red (depending on oil composition).
Good to know! Never use plastic drink bottles for storing and mixing the fuel mixture. Gasoline corrodes plastics. And even if the walls of the bottle seem to be intact, harmful components will enter the fuel mixture, and with it the engine. This is very bad for the carburetor.
Wearing gloves is recommended to protect your hands from the oil and gasoline. Also remember the elementary rules of fire safety. Mix the liquids outside so that gasoline fumes do not accumulate indoors. Do not smoke while working and avoid other factors that can cause inflammation of combustible and lubricating materials.
Pour the prepared fuel mixture into the fuel tank and close the cap tightly. If you have made more gasoline than you can use at one time, empty it into a separate canister for storage or leave it in the mixing tank. The main thing is to close the cap tightly. The ready-to-use mixture may be stored for up to two weeks and used for refueling without risk to the engine. The only condition. do not leave it in the fuel tank. If you will not be using the tool for an extended period, use up all the leftovers or drain it.
Now you know how to dilute gasoline for a chainsaw so as not to harm the engine. Try to do it yourself. After you prepare the fuel mixture several times, it will be clear what amount of components will be needed, so that there is no excess mixture. You can buy everything you need in our online store. With brand-name oils, your tool will last a long time.
Rules of mixing
And now about how to mix the components correctly. But it’s better to start with analysis of widespread, but totally unacceptable mistakes made by many owners of this mower. The following are considered mistakes in mixing the fuel mixture.
- Adding oil to the fuel already in the trimmer’s gas tank. You won’t get a homogeneous fuel mixture in such a way. It may work, if only then shake the grass trimmer for a long time. But it’s unlikely that you do, because of the weight of the machine.
- First of all, to pour oil into the mixing tank and then to add gasoline to it. Gasoline has a lower density than oil, so if it is poured over oil, it will remain in the upper layer, that is, there will be no natural mixing. Of course, you can mix it afterwards, but it will require much more energy than if you do it the other way around. pouring oil to the poured gasoline.
- Ignoring precise measuring tools to take the necessary volumes of ingredients used. In other words, it is a bad habit to dilute the amount of oil or gasoline “by eye” when operating a motorcycle.
- Taking empty drinking water bottles for the fuel mixture. It is made of polyethylene, which is too thin and can dissolve with gasoline.
Taking all the above mentioned into consideration, we recommend to use the following rules when mixing the fuel mixture for the two-stroke engines of your grass trimmer.
- Use only clean containers made of metal or special plastic for storing gasoline, oil, ready fuel mixture and its preparation.
- To add oil, use a measuring cup with volume markings or a 5 ml and 10 ml medical syringe.
- First pour petrol into the canister for preparation of the fuel mixture, and then oil.
- To dilute the mixture, first pour only half of the planned volume of gasoline into the container.
- Next add to the gasoline all the amount of oil required to make the mixture.
- Thoroughly mix the contents of the dilution tank. it is better to stir stir with a tightly closed container in a circular motion. Do not mix fuel with an object inside the canister, because you do not know what material it is made of, what kind of reaction it may have with the ingredients of the mixture and how clean it is.
- Add the rest of the gasoline to the stirred mixture and stir thoroughly again.
- It is possible to fill the fuel tank of a lawnmower with a prepared mixture.
Recommendations for storing the ready-to-use fuel mixture for the grass trimmer
After filling up the grass trimmer, many put off the remaining mixture in the bottle until the next time. Sometimes this next time comes not soon, and stretches into the next year. Do not keep the mixture ready for so long, because the oil will decompose. After preparing the mixture, use it up within 1-2 weeks. In addition, you should also not store the tool for a long time with the fuel mixture poured into the tank, because the effect will be similar. To prevent unforeseen circumstances, it is advisable to consider the following recommendations for storing the finished gasoline-oil mixture:
- Prepare the fuel mixture in the amount that will be used. If you don’t know how much fuel you’re using, it’s better to make less
- If there is fuel mixture left in the trimmer’s grass tank (when the tool is hidden until the next season), then it must be completely used up or drained
- Before pouring the prepared mixture into the tank, you need to stir it thoroughly
- Store ready mix in a tightly screwed container and in a place restricted to sunlight
If all the recommendations are followed, the life of the grass trimmer will be at least as long as specified in the manual. The use of quality consumables paired with adherence to the recommendations on the preparation of the mixture into the grass trimmer, will result in a long and efficient service of the gasoline tool.
