Installing a chain on a STIHL chainsaw

A chain can stretch too much if it is used incorrectly or for too long. This is due to the fact that metal over time can deform. Very heavy wear and tear is the reason to get a new version, but it is possible to use the old one for a short period. Avoid sharp stretching is only possible by following the operating advice. It takes work to get the job done:

It is not difficult to put on the stretched version, but there are many problems with the restoration, because the metal is characterized by high strength. The main parts are riveted together. The work is carried out in the following way:

  • The product is fastened in tight spots.
  • If the work is performed using an angle grinder, in other words, it is possible that the surface will be damaged, because this tool is difficult to keep under control.
  • After grinding, the rivets are knocked out. No need to throw it away because of the ability to reintroduce.
  • Manufacturers of chains do not produce spare elements, which are required for maintenance.
  • Riveting can be done with their own hands, but the work is quite difficult.
  • The product is divided into two parts. It is worth remembering that the number and spacing of the guides must remain constant.

When dealing with long lengths, do not forget that a very small chain can no longer be tensioned. The chain should not be treated with oil or grease chain of the electric chainsaw.

The chainsaw chain is the element that is subjected to the highest stress and overheating. It can break, come off the guide bar or just become dull through years of use. For timely maintenance or replacement with a newer one, you need to know how to remove the saw chain from the chainsaw and put it back on without assistance. The step by step method of these operations will be shown below.

Causes of chain breakdowns

The accelerated lengthening of the part occurs during the running-in phase and in the last quarter of the operating life. During these time intervals the cutting attachment needs special attention and a thorough service.

  • The reason of fast stretching of the saw chain can be bad quality of the material of the budget model, wrong configuration of the rim and excessive wear of the drive sprocket, malfunction or ineffective operation of the lubrication system.
  • To a large extent, chain saw chain performance also depends on the condition of the bar and drive sprocket, the quality of the chain oil and performance of the lubrication system, and the timely and correct sharpening of the cutting edges.

According to the opinion of professional sawyers, the operator’s working style and the level of use influence the durability of the chainset. The chains of the budget group are exposed to a greater extent to stretching, the more expensive branded assortment has no remarks on the technical and working properties.

How to put the chain on the chainsaw correctly?

In most chainsaw models it is easy to put the chain on the bar by unscrewing the main screw, then the chainrings are placed on the drive sprocket. Before you start, check the general condition of all the cutting surfaces and the guide bar and setting wheel. It is not uncommon for dirt and small chips to accumulate in it, which will later lead to scheduled repairs, deterioration of sliding. Step-by-step operating procedure:

  • Loosen the screws that secure the sprocket cover, normally screwed on with a wing nut.
  • Turn the tightening sprocket to the right as far as it will go.
  • Put the links on the headset, starting from the top. Make sure they fit into the appropriate slots.
  • Reattach the chain sprocket mount, tighten the nut. The guides must engage in the guide groove.
  • Release the chain brake, pull the chain along the driving line to check the tension. If necessary, tighten the tensioning lever.

The thumbwheel should turn freely after setting the chain. Always lubricate all moving parts when you are finished with the tool to avoid unnecessary wear and tear.

Important:! Only wear thick protective gloves when installing the headset. This will save you from injuries and cuts by the sharp edges of the cutting edge of the tines.

How to tension a chainsaw chain correctly

Before we start talking about how to tension the chain correctly, there are a few simple rules. First, service should be performed with the engine off and without risk of accidental starting. Second, all work should only be carried out once the tool has cooled down. The reason is that a hot saw chain is longer than a cold chain. If you start to tension it, there is a risk that the bar will bind and deform once it has cooled.

Remember safety! Wear protective gloves to prevent cutting your hands with the sharp chain links.

If the saw headset is recently installed and has little wear, there is no point in changing the chain. It is enough to adjust its tension. What are the signs of insufficient tensioning? The chain slackens at the bottom of the bar and shifts sideways at the top. This leads to misalignment during sawing and therefore affects the service life of the bar. it wears unevenly. Also, insufficient tension in the chain increases the risk of the chain jumping off the bar and causes increased wear on the saw blade and drive sprocket. Because tightening the chain correctly is not the only way to remove slack in the chain, it is also important not to overtighten it. Stiff webbing in the bar increases the load on the engine and other working parts of the tool. Try to turn the chain around the bar by hand. If it is difficult to tighten it, you need to loosen it.

Important to know! The chain most often needs tensioning when new, because it tends to stretch at the beginning of use. Always check the tension and adjust if necessary. This is important for extending its life and reducing wear on other important parts of the saw.

How To Change A Chainsaw Chain | Stihl Chainsaw

To replace the sawblade you need to loosen the guide bar and remove the old chain. To do this, loosen the fasteners of the cover that holds the saw headset, remove the chain from the sprocket, and remove the tooling. The new chain must have the same dimensions as the old one. It is placed on the bar in the longitudinal groove with the drive links. Attach the free end of the chain to the sprocket. Be sure to make sure that the links fit into the groove along the entire length of the set. Fit the bar on the dowel where it will be attached to the tool. Close this assembly with the cover and secure the bar. This is done using screws or a rotary knob.

Tip: To evenly wear the bar, it is recommended that you flip it over. swap the top and bottom. The inscription on the tire is a good guide. For example, if the letters have been positioned correctly, the inscription must be upside down when you change it.

The instructions for your chain saw should tell you how to tension the chain correctly. But it is not always possible to use it. So we’ll show you the sequence of steps for tightening a chain with different tensioning systems.

  • Traditional chain tensioning with a tool. You’ll need a standard wrench, which is usually included with your chain saw. It has a working part for unscrewing the nuts on one side and a slotted screwdriver on the other. First you need to loosen the nuts on the cover that covers the place where the bar is attached. Then put a screwdriver in the special groove and turn it to tighten the chain. Don’t overdo it. it’s better to tighten the chain gradually. Make a few revolutions. check the tension by hand by pulling the chain at the bottom of the bar. After the adjustment is completed, the nuts on the cover should be tightened.
  • Tool-less chain tensioning. This way is easier and faster. On the side of the cover there is an adjusting screw for tensioning the chain. By turning it, you control the amount of slack in the chain.

How do you know if your chainsaw chain is tensioned properly?? The chain sprocket should not slacken at the bottom, and when it is pulled back, the inner teeth should not protrude more than 4 to 6 mm out of the bar groove. It is important to make sure the chain is not over tightened. To do this, twist it by hand along the bar in the direction of rotation as when sawing. If it is smooth, you have done everything right. It’s better to under tighten the chain than over tighten it. This can be readily detected and corrected as you work. But if the saw chain won’t run smoothly, it is not immediately noticeable and has a detrimental effect on the engine. When you service the tool with your own hands, you’ll know how to tighten the chainsaw chain correctly without risk of damaging its working parts. Once you have achieved optimum tensioning, you can lock all fasteners and start the tool. Let it run idle, without load. Then turn off the engine and check that the chain is still intact and slack. You’re ready to go to work with this tool.

Causes of Circuit Failure

A saw chain needs attention and good maintenance just like any other part. This particularly applies to the break-in period for chain saws and chainsaws. However, they should be monitored throughout the entire service life.

The main causes of circuit malfunction:

  • Poor metal quality on low-end models;
  • Operator’s operating style;
  • Improper tensioning;
  • Faulty or excessive wear on the drive sprocket;
  • Malfunctions in automatic lubrication system;
  • A bent, clogged, or otherwise broken saw bar;
  • Use of poor quality materials;
  • Untimely sharpening of working edges;
  • Level of chainsaw operating stress;

All of these can lead to rather unfortunate circumstances, and significant expenditures on the purchase of new parts and chainsaw repairs:

  • Deterioration of operational capabilities and labor productivity;
  • Safety of operator during sawing operations;
  • Premature wear of individual parts and components and the entire chainsaw;

Why the chain is coming off, why is it coming off?

If you’re wondering why the chain on your chainsaw is coming off, it means there’s something wrong with the mechanism. There are three main reasons for this malfunction: the bar is not working properly, the chain is stretched, and the sprocket is loose. Let’s take a closer look at each of the possible causes.

Trouble with the tire

If there is a problem with the tire, the tensioning of the chain almost always becomes loose. The problem usually occurs at the mounting location of the tire.

This location is in the groove between the outer plate, which is located on the chain guard, and the inner plate, which is located on the engine housing. The casing with the tire is bolted together. This attachment is called an “engine assembly.”. The drive sprocket and tire mounting are protected by special covers.

If the securing bolts come loose, the tire starts to move or vibrate. If the bar is serviceable, the chain tension should be normal. Once it is tightened, it will go at least five working days without any tensioning. That’s why you need to tighten the bolts that hold the tire in place.

Did you know? In the town of Nore, which is in Canada, chainsaw wood carving is highly developed. All the streets and squares of this town are decorated with products that were created by the masters of chainsaws.

To understand how to tighten the chain on a chainsaw, you first need to find and lower the chain brake. the tensioning screw is next to the bar and is turned until the chain is tensioned on the bar. Then the chain is pulled off in a clockwise direction. If it does not move, you need to loosen it a little by turning the tensioning screw in the opposite direction.

Stretched chain

If you have a sagging chain on the chain saw, it indicates a malfunction of some mechanism, one of the options is the wear of the chain itself.

Over time, the metal deforms and the chain goes to 0.5-1 cm longer. The best way to fix this problem is to buy a new chain, but there is a way to get the old one back to work. Experts say it’s very tricky and nearly impossible, but we’ll tell you how you can do it at home.

For this we will need:

An ordinary chainsaw chain is made of strong steel and is therefore difficult to detach. To loosen the chain, you must be on the inside of the rivet, which serves as a connecting mechanism.

To begin with, the chain should be secured in a vise, and then gradually grind down the protruding part. You need to file or file to grind. Do not use an angle grinder since you risk damaging the side parts of the links. After grinding, the rivets are knocked out with a bead. The rivet should not be thrown away. You might not be able to find a replacement. Manufacturers of gasoline saws do not produce separate parts for the chain, as they do not assume that consumers will be able to repair the chain themselves. You will probably not be able to make a new rivet yourself, so you must put the old one in.

To shorten the chain, split it in two places. But remember that the number of guide lugs on the inside of the chain and the distance between them should match the drive sprocket.

Important! When welding a link, set the current to the minimum value. Use the smallest diameter electrode so you don’t hit the neighboring links.

After removing one or more links (depending on how stretched the chain is) the chain can be put back together. Join on the old rivets, pressing them tightly against the sides.

Next, we need a welder. The rivet should be welded to the sides of the link. After that, use a file to grind away any excess that was created by working with the weld. The chain can be considered as working again.

The drive sprocket is loose

One possible cause of slack in the chain on your machine is a problem with the drive sprocket. This is most often caused by a loose sprocket. Now we’ll show you how to attach the sprocket correctly and then put the chain on the chain saw.

First you need to remove the motor protective cover. Next, remove the protective cap of the candle, pull out the air filter. Then use a special wrench to unscrew the spark plug. A special stopper is put in its place, which fixes the piston in a certain position. Using a special wrench (you can use a universal wrench for angle grinder) turn clockwise the clutch disk until the piston reaches the extreme upper position. If you look into the spark plug hole, the piston should stay underneath. We can use a thick rope as a stopper, it is better to fold it several times. After clamping, you can clamp the drive sprocket by turning the clutch disc counterclockwise.

After clamping you have to do everything in the reverse order, i.e. to reassemble the chainsaw. The chain should be put on the bar and hit the sprocket that holds it. The bar is placed in the special mounting holes and screwed down. Protection.
