How to remove the pulley from the electric motor without a puller?

The universal technique, the use of which justifies itself most often, is a simple mechanical action. light blows on opposite sides of the pulley, alternately. the pulley will pull away gradually from its mounting surface on the shaft and can be removed.

In more complicated cases, the list of necessary actions is planned on the basis of the following factors:

  • how the pulley is attached to the motor shaft (type of fit);
  • condition of the surfaces at the joint (depending on the service life, susceptibility to corrosion of the materials).

under what conditions is it possible to remove the pulley from the motor without a puller

There are a number of cases where to effectively solve the problem of how to remove the pulley from the motor, you can not do without a puller. However, there is usually no need to use special tools if:

  • the pulley has been installed without a puller, i.e. the shaft diameter does not exceed the diameter of the pulley bore;
  • the mating surfaces have not been subject to deformation in the course of operation of the motor.

On low-powered motors, pulleys can be reliably secured in place with a splined fit, with screw connections or with the aid of locking elements (rings, washers). To separate the pulley from the engine in such cases, it is sufficient to unscrew the nuts (or remove the rings). The situation is more complicated if a ring with serrated edges is used in the place of attachment.

Before unscrewing the fasteners it is recommended that the sheave is carefully clamped in a vice. To avoid deformation of the pulley, spacers made of wood are placed between the plates of the vice and the surface of the part to be clamped.

Front oil seal: peculiarities of replacement

Oil leaking from under the crankshaft lip gets onto the crankshaft pulley, and then splashes into the engine compartment. Wear on the front packing can be one of the causes of this condition. Before removing this part, you must ensure that the crankcase ventilation is in good condition, otherwise oil may leak, even from a part that does not have any complaints.

Before the operation to replace the front crankshaft oil seal should be prepared with the appropriate tools. This operation is carried out in a certain sequence:

The oil sump guard and the splashguard are removed.

Remove the power steering pump belt.

Unscrew the nut by which the alternator is secured to the adjustment bar, move it toward the engine to loosen the belt that is to be removed.

Unscrew the nut that secures the crankshaft pulleys using a socket head, and then remove them.

Remove the worn out front oil seal from its place by using a flat screwdriver that slightly lifts this part.

The socket is wiped with a clean rag, and then oiled, the new product is installed in place using a mandrel with the appropriate diameter. Note that this product should be placed inside the engine with the working edge first.

Assembly of the dismantled components is performed in reverse order.

Heating method

If you have used a thermal method to install the pulley, which is based on the expansion of materials, particularly metals, when heated, you will need to heat the pulley to remove it:

  • the heating produced by the edges of the pulley will increase the diameter of the bore by fractions of a millimeter and thus reduce the degree of contact with the shaft;
  • It then becomes possible to move the part from its seating position by tapping it successively at different ends.

What you need to watch out for with this technique:

  • One time heating may not be enough, especially if the pulley bore is large;
  • the shaft must be reliably insulated from the temperature-increasing action applied to the pulley, because if the shaft is indirectly heated, the mating elements will only become stronger;
  • if this happens, it is necessary to wait until the elements have cooled down completely and then repeat the procedure.

Depending on what material is used for the pulley and the shaft, you may choose a different strategy, which, on the contrary, the shaft is cooled.

How to unscrew the crankshaft pulley nut?

A nut on the end of crankshaft, keeping the pulley is a sign of a classic rear-drive car assembly of VAZ type from 2101 to 2107, “Niva” and the like. Such a nut is also called a “ratchet”, as it may have ledges for the “crooked starter.

It is better to work above the inspection pit. The crankshaft should be secured by engaging the transmission in 4th gear and applying the parking brake. the following tools should be provided beforehand

Standing under the vehicle try to unscrew the nut with a wrench with a long enough lever. If the attempt is unsuccessful, put the gearbox in neutral and proceed as follows:

  • The candlesticks are removed;
  • being in the pit, set the wrench and extension cord so that the end rested on the floor or a spar in the direction of rotation of the shaft;
  • by turning the key in the ignition switch, a brief impulse is given.

Usually, on the first or second try, the nut is loosened and then unscrewed with a normal wrench. Do not forget to loosen and remove the alternator belt.

Using the puller to remove the pulley

Before you remove the pulley from the shaft of the electric motor, you can install a special device. a puller, the structure of which is not complicated. The design includes:

remove, pulley, lawnmower, motor
  • metal plate with a hole in the center and not wide slots;
  • nut welded to the plate;
  • bolts (one should be the same size as the welded nut, and the other two should be smaller, with a recess in the face).

The disadvantage of the method is the need to slightly disturb the integrity of the pulley, which surface to attach the puller:

  • The plate is attached to the pulley with two screws;
  • start screwing the third bolt into the central nut, with its end resting against the metal ball, previously fastened in the alignment slot of the shaft;
  • As it is screwed in, the bolt pushes the puller plate away from the shaft, gradually removing the pulley from its seat.

There is a chance that the bolt’s travel is not sufficient to dislodge the part. If this happens, try putting extra nuts under the side bolts.

Knowing the basic principles of disassembly and using simple tools can therefore help you choose the best sequence of operations and quickly remove the pulley from the shaft.

When the lawnmower won’t start

Depending on the size of the lawn and the growth of the grass, the lawn owner can select the best technique for the job. It comes in several types:

Also, the restoration of lawnmowers with their own hands will be required if the conditions of winter storage turned out to be inappropriate. For example, after use, the working surfaces were not cleaned or interseasonal preventive maintenance was absent. A variety of problems show up as a result:

  • lawn mower blades need frequent sharpening;
  • the lawnmower just won’t start;
  • the engine starts but the lawnmower cuts out after a short time;
  • Malfunctions appear in the carburetor, which requires not only disassembly, but also cleaning with repair;
  • lawn mower repair with your own hands is required when there is a big drop in power during work.

You don’t need to go to an expensive service center. Many problems can be solved inexpensively and repaired on your own.

After each use of the tool it is necessary to clean the cutting elements. Change oil and service regularly to minimise the risk of breakdowns.

When the mower does not start

Depending on the area of the lawn and the growth of grass on it, the owners choose the optimal technique in terms of characteristics. It comes in several types:

An average-priced mower lasts about four seasons in the climatic conditions of St. Petersburg, Moscow or similar regions. expensive or less exploited garden assistants are able to endure in the field for 5-6 seasons.

Also, restoring lawn mowers with their own hands will be required if the conditions of winter storage turned out to be inappropriate. For example, no cleaning of working surfaces after use or absence of interseasonal preventive maintenance. As a result, a variety of problems appear:

  • frequent sharpening of mower blades is required;
  • the lawnmower simply will not start;
  • the engine starts but the lawnmower stops after a short period of time;
  • carburettor malfunctions occur and not only need to be disassembled but also need to be cleaned and repaired;
  • lawn mower repair with their own hands is required in case of a significant decrease in power during operation.

Going to an expensive service center is not worth it. Many problems can be solved with minimal costs and can be repaired by yourself.

The cutting elements should be cleaned after each use. Change oil and service oil at regular intervals to minimise risk of damage.
