Running in and out of STIHL chain saws and other power tools

The times of the first chainsaws (“Ural” and “Druzhba”) in our country are gone. Gone are the days when the question “How to run in a chain saw” was relevant. STIHL machines do not require a running-in period. Not at all! No. Not even if you are told to run it in, by the guys at the market where you buy it.

By the way: If you buy a STIHL machine on the market it means you are 99.99999% sure you are not buying a STIHL machine but a Chinese replica. First of all, the machines are only sold through authorized dealers, the manufacturer’s website and a small number of authorized dealers. Secondly, no sales manager will tell you to cold start your STIHL chain saw and run it in. Why? Let’s see below in a little more detail.

How to run-in STIHL power tools

The chainsaw comes off the assembly line and is taken to the machine shop where you assemble it, pour the oil and fuel mixture, check it, turn it on and have been fixed in the special running-in chamber for power tools in the factory, right next to the conveyor belt. During the regulated time, it passes a “hot” running-in period until the nodes and mechanisms are fully lapped to each other. this is actually the purpose of running-in and the best way to run-in a STIHL chainsaw. So as soon as you get it, fill it up and pour the oil in. and go straight to battle! Work for 10-15 minutes, rest for 5 minutes, then 15-30 minutes and rest again. After 3 to 5 carats of gas it will have reached its maximum performance and you are ready to work for the specified time.

Similar to the above described procedure, you should not run your STIHL brushcutter or STIHL brush cutter in, or even run your STIHL pole trimmer in. Yes, some manufacturers may recommend it, but in this STIHL case it would only be a waste of time and your resources (effort, fuel, oil).

A blower is also called a garden vacuum cleaner. It is a very handy tool that can remove light debris and fallen leaves from a garden plot (usually 30-50 square meters.м.). Like all STIHL power tools it is precisely run-in at the factory so you do not need to run it in addition. Only in the first days of work, give it a reduced load, do not let it “in the fight” at all 100% at once.

Let us summarize the above stated. Use for your brand equipment an oil designed or recommended by the manufacturer of that equipment. For the STIHL FS 55 brushcutter, for example, STIHL HP oil (see lithium-ion filter, page 5). Useful tip

Never use 2-stroke oil intended for water-cooled engines, because these oils are designed to operate at lower temperatures.

The proportions of oil and gasoline for the fuel mix in the owner’s manual should be followed. The most frequently quoted ratio according to Chinese manufacturers is 1 part oil to 25 parts gasoline; STIHL and Husqvarna specifies 1:50.When preparing a small volume of mixture (up to 1 liter), it is very important to carefully measure the amount of oil included in the mixture. Even small errors in the amount of oil can lead to big differences in the mix. In these cases it is possible to use medical syringe for accurate dosing.Fuel mixture should be prepared in a clean, purpose-built container. (see Figure 2). figure 2)

Useful tip

I do not recommend using improvised plastic bottles and canisters as gasoline can dissolve plastics and all this “slurry” gets into fuel tank and causes failure of carburetor.

Plastic canisters designed for gasoline are always marked with the “flame” sign. It is very convenient to use a canister equipped with a spill-free filling system (see Figure 2). figure 3). The no-fill system has a valve that prevents fuel from spilling when the tank is full.

Preparation of fuel mixture for two-stroke engine with forced air cooling. Such engines are commonly used in chainsaws and brushcutters.To make the fuel we need:

  • Gasoline. I buy 92 t.к. It contains fewer additives. Most chain saw and brush maker recommends that you use gasoline with an octane rating of 90 or higher, so 92 is fine.
  • Oil. This time I have semi-synthetic oil from ALC. The color of the oil is green. The actual color has no meaning and is determined by the dye that is added to the engine oil. Dye is needed to understand that there is oil in the fuel mixture, and to be able to roughly estimate the amount of.
  • Glass bottle for mixing gasoline and oil. Never mix petrol and oil in the tank. You just can’t do it properly. Don’t use plastic bottles to mix the fuel mixture. The plastic used in Coke bottles and other beverages dissolves and settles on the membranes of chainsaw and brush cutter carburetors and causes them to malfunction.
  • A measuring cup or syringe. I need it to dose the oil precisely. I use a 20cc medicine syringe, which you can buy at any drugstore.
  • A paintbrush, so you don’t spill any fuel past the bottle.
  • A small reservoir in which you can pour the oil. You can take the oil out of the bottle with a syringe, but it’s not convenient.

Pour some oil for chain saws and brush cutters into a small container and use a syringe to measure out the amount we need. I make fuel for my Echo SRM-22GES brushcutter. According to the manual the oil to gasoline ratio for this engine is 50:1. This brushcutter has a fuel tank capacity of 0.5 L. It turns out that I need 20 ml per liter of gasoline. I only need 10ml of engine oil for a half a liter bottle, which is just enough to fill up my brushcutter completely.

Once you’ve determined the oil setting, you only need to pour the oil from the syringe into a glass mixing bottle, add your gasoline, and mix.

We can get to work. A properly made fuel mix guarantees that our chain saw and lawnmower will work for a long time without the need to change the piston group.

Ratio of oil to gasoline for the fuel mixture

For a two-stroke chainsaw engine to work in optimum conditions, oil and gasoline need to be mixed in certain proportions. These are usually found in the tool owner’s manual and on grease packages. Let’s consider briefly what will happen if the recommended ratios are not observed or violated by mistake (ignorance).

If you add too little oil to the gasoline, its concentration will not be enough to effectively lubricate the working parts. The engine will make a ringing sound, heat up excessively, and will fail quickly. Too much oil is not good either, because the surplus will not burn properly. This will cause fouling of the cylinder walls and piston, fouling of the spark plugs, fouling of the exhaust system. Also the power will fall, fuel consumption will increase, and during the work excessive smokiness of the exhaust will be observed.

To avoid these problems, oil and gasoline should be mixed in the proportions recommended by the manufacturer. They are indicated as ratios. 1:50, 1:40, 1:25, and so on. Either of these proportions tells you how much oil to pour per volume of fuel. For example, you need 1 liter of oil for 25 liters of gasoline to make a 1:25 mixture.

It is important not to confuse the proportions! Quite often the indicated proportions are perceived by users in the opposite way. For example, 1:50 means 50 milliliters of oil for 1 liter of gasoline. It is a serious mistake that will lead to a higher concentration of oil in the fuel. In fact, with this ratio, you only need 20 milliliters of oil per liter of oil.

How not to get mixed up in the proportions? After all, few people need to prepare 50, or even 25 liters of fuel mixture for a chainsaw. You should not keep petrol mixed with oil for a long time. You usually make as much as you need for a day or two. And taking into account the small consumption of the chainsaw, this is 1-5 liters.

There are three ways to properly dilute gasoline for a chain saw in small volumes:

  • Divide 1,000 by the second digit in the proportion. For example, we have to prepare a mixture in the ratio of 1:40. Divide 1000 by 40, you get 25. That’s how many milliliters of oil you put in a liter of gasoline.
  • To solve a proportion, just like in school. So we divide the needed volume of gasoline in liters by the second number in the proportion. As a result, we get the necessary amount of oil in liters. Convert liters into milliliters for convenience. Let’s say you need 3 liters of mixture in the proportion of 1:50. We solve: 3/50 = 0.06 liter. To give milliliters, put a comma three digits to the right and you have 60 milliliters.
  • Look at the table. It is the easiest, quickest and most straightforward method if the proportions are standard. The other two methods are needed to understand why you need to pour 20 milliliters of oil per liter of gasoline, not 50, in the 1:50 ratio.

Now briefly about why the proportions differ from manufacturer to manufacturer and why there is no single standard. There are at least three reasons for this. First, different characteristics of oils and gasoline. Secondly, the quality of engine assembly (technology, materials) is also different. Third, the mode of operation of the tool. For example, for running-in of chain saws of some manufacturers it is recommended to add 20% more oil to the mixture.

How to dilute gasoline for a chainsaw?

Before pouring fuel into the tank, it is necessary to prepare a gasoline mixture. The ratio of oil and gasoline for a chainsaw is regulated in strict proportions. as a rule, they are specified in the instruction manual. In that case, if you don’t know how much oil to pour into the gasoline for a domestic gasoline chainsaw, it’s recommended to use the ratio 1:15. 1:20. Т.е., use 50-70 ml of oil per 1 liter of gasoline.

As for imported equipment, the proportions are quite different. For example, how to dilute gasoline with oil for a 2 kW Husqvarna chainsaw? For this we look at the manual and see that the manufacturer recommends using a ratio of 1:50, i.e.е. use max 20 ml of oil per 1 liter of petrol. If there is no passport (it is lost, torn, etc) the oil is used to fill the chain saw.e), use the internet or contact a service center. that way you will know exactly how much oil to put in your gasoline for your chainsaw. Too much oil can cause more carbon deposits and clogging of the cylinder, which can lead to cracked piston rings and decreased compression, and is expensive. If the amount of oil in the mixture for chain saws is low, it will lead to overheating of the engine and drastically reduce its resource.

If you don’t know how much oil to pour into Chinese chain saw, and you have no manual at hand, the proportion is about 1:25, that is 40 ml of oil to 1 liter of gasoline. In general, the amount of oil depends on the layout. the tighter all the parts are installed, the less oil is needed.

Before you prepare the gasoline mixture for a chainsaw, you must first pour gasoline into the canister, and only then add oil, not otherwise. Otherwise the more viscous oil will stick to the walls and the bottom of the canister and dissolve worse, thus disturbing the correct proportions of gasoline and chainsaw oil.

Oil for two-stroke chainsaw engines

Today’s modern chainsaws can be equipped with either a 2 or 4-stroke engine. In the latter, the oil originally comes to the crank group parts directly from the engine crankcase.

In contrast, with two-stroke factory engines, the fuel flows into the plane below the piston. In order to fill such chainsaws with fresh gasoline you need to add engine oil. It lubricates the engine’s friction parts, preventing premature wear and tear.

2-stroke chainsaw engine oil must comply with a number of important parameters:

  • Oil combustion should produce a minimum amount of ash. It is best that the oil used is fully burned;
  • The lubricant should dissolve quickly in petrol;
  • 2-stroke oil must be free of detrimental impurities that could block the carburettor pipes.

The choice of oils for 2-stroke engines largely depends on the types of cooling systems. Compounds of 2T standard are suitable for the lubrication of internal combustion engines equipped with air cooling systems. For liquid-cooled engines, choose TC-W3 oils.

The oil used for permanent lubrication of the engine of the tool used must be of the highest quality. Low-quality oils in the combustion form a large amount of sludge, which is deposited on the cylinder walls and under the piston rings of the internal combustion engine. Because of this, the original rings lose their ability to shrink, resulting in burrs on the inner walls of the engine cylinder. In addition, poor lubrication leads to overheating of the crank mechanism. As a result, they jam and completely fail.

Preparing the fuel mix: proportion of oil and gasoline for a chainsaw

The chainsaw engine is the “heart” of the tool, so it is very important to use a properly prepared fuel mixture.

The fuel mixture for a chainsaw is made of two components. oil and gasoline. chainsaws are equipped with a two-stroke engine, so oil is not added to the lubrication system (as in a four-stroke engine) but directly to the gasoline. It is very important to observe the correct proportions of ingredients and, of course, in no case try to work on pure gasoline, because that way you will very quickly “kill” the chainsaw.

The oil must be necessarily designed for two-stroke engines of gardening and forestry machinery (that is, in no case can you use oil for boat motors or scooters). As practice shows, such oil can be purchased at any store or service center, where chainsaws are sold or serviced.

If we talk about what gasoline to fill a chainsaw, it would be optimal to use fuel with the octane number of A-95, in this case, the savings on fuel can turn out badly. Often, European manufacturers indicate that you can use gasoline A-90 or A-92, but in post-Soviet countries the quality of gasoline is inferior to European, so in our realities it is better to use higher-quality gasoline.

As for the proportion of gasoline-oil mixture itself, then everything is simple: you must clearly follow the instructions of the tool. All chainsaw manufacturers indicate the required ratio in the instruction manual or in the tool’s certificate, in addition, the proportions for filling the chainsaw may vary depending on the model of chain saw. As a rule, the ratio of oil to gasoline in a chain saw from reputable manufacturers is 1:40 or 1:50, which means one part oil to, say, 40 parts gasoline.

Now the arithmetic: 1 liter of gasoline = 1000 ml of gasoline, divide by 40 and you get 25 ml of oil. If we do the same for a 1:50 ratio, we get 20 ml of oil in 1 liter of gasoline.

As for the budget Chinese-made chainsaws, the situation is a little different. Petrol to oil ratio for chain saw made in China 1:25, so 1000 ml of gasoline divided by 25, in other words 40 ml of oil. The reason is that brand name chain saws have a solid build and the distance between pistons and cylinders in the engine is much smaller than in Chinese-made chain saws, so the required oil amount is almost twice as much.

One more thing. in a dry gasoline canister fill up with gasoline first and then with oil. The procedure on the contrary is fraught with poor quality fuel mixture, because the oil is more dense, will stick to the bottom of the canister. That’s why there is no way to talk about a good mixture.

Be sure to prepare the fuel mixture in a canister and fill the gas tank with already prepared special fuel! Never prepare or mix it directly in the fuel tank of the chainsaw!

If the question how to dilute gasoline for a chainsaw is solved, then the about fuel mixture storage conditions and expiration dates a few words must be said. It is best and easiest to prepare gasoline-oil mixture for 1 liter of gasoline, it is recommended to do it just before working with the tool. Gasoline tanks of chainsaws have the volume from 0,3 to 1 liter. In domestic use, the entire volume of the prepared fuel mixture is rarely used in one session, so the remainder can be saved until the next session. It is necessary to store the fuel mixture in a special canister for gasoline, in a dry, dark place. It is optimal to calculate that The period of storage of the ready mixture is 7-10 days

The fact that the oil presented now on the market is not synthetic, and organic, that is natural. After 10 days all lubricating properties are gone, gasoline simply “eats up” the oil. Naturally, it is no longer possible to use such fuel, it could cause breakdown and failure of the chainsaw.

At the end of the work it is necessary to drain the fuel mixture and start the chainsaw. the tool will stall (so that the saw has a dry carburetor) and now you can leave it until the next session of operation.

Peculiarities of the running-in of a new tool

This includes gentle operation of the chainsaw at the initial stage of its operation. The technology also involves running the engine on a mixture with 20% more engine oil.

The operating hours are indicated in the service manual. In practice it is enough to fill 3-5 times the gas tank of a chainsaw to reach the operating level.

New models do not need a running-in period, but it is not recommended to use the chain saw with heavy loads for the first hours.
