How to properly cut a ceiling plinth at a corner joint

In the attachment of the fillet (so this element is called) there are no difficulties: in fact, all varieties of products are attached to a reliable glue.

In order to hang a ceiling plinth, even inexperienced repairmen have no difficulty. Worries them quite another thing: how to properly trim a ceiling molding? Virtually every room, no matter how intricately shaped, has corners.

And here in these inner corners, the individual elements of the baseboard must be beautifully and evenly docked. And in rooms of especially complex configuration will have to fiddle over the outer corners. Let’s try to figure out how to be in each of these situations, and how to cut the right part with the available tools.

Baseboard materials and cutting methods

First of all, let’s try to determine what can be used to make a fillet, and what a particular material is better to cut.

On sale today you can find products made of foam (polyvinyl chloride), wood, polystyrene foam and polyurethane.

Perhaps one of the cheapest are baseboards made of foam plastic, which is a fragile, soft and brittle material.

Even the fingers of the hand can leave dents, creases and defects on them easily. It is rather difficult to cut a nice and even corner of a PVC skirting board.

An inexperienced craftsman can throw away a large amount of purchased material for this very reason. Also, this polymer has high electrostatic properties, which explains its ability to collect dust.

It is best to cut such a skirting board with a hacksaw or a sharp construction knife.

Products made of polystyrene foam are also inexpensive, although this material is a more durable analog of the traditional foam.

Handled also with sharp tools.

Skirting boards made of extruded polystyrene foam are a bit more expensive, they are somewhat denser and more difficult to cut. But they are much less likely to crumble and break.

Therefore, it is more convenient and easier to cut them. For this purpose it is convenient to use a hacksaw or sharp knife.

Polyurethane skirting boards for the ceiling are currently, perhaps, one of the most expensive.

But they are worth their price: they are moisture resistant, quite strong and dense, and quite elastic.

Baseboards over a kitchen stove can warp and even crack a little.

They are perfectly cut with a special knife, without forming a crumb. But these products are very sensitive to temperature fluctuations.

Wooden skirting boards for the ceiling. these are quite heavy and dense products, hard and durable.

They lend themselves well to machining with a special fine-toothed hacksaw. It is also possible to use a reliable canvas on metal. So how do you cut a skirting board properly??

Prefabricated corners

Every craftsman can cut and fit corners without time-consuming painstakingly.

In a construction store you can buy a prefabricated corner element, in which the prepared edges of the baseboard can easily be inserted.

It is sufficient to measure the required length of the workpiece, and cut it at right angles.

All defects and imperfections will be covered by this special element. But such a convenient way to use is not always possible, because the standard sizes of such factory corners can differ markedly from the size of the baseboard itself.

Such corners will stand out for their disproportionality, and it will not look very neat. But if the design of the room and the size of blanks allow you to use this method, then you should not neglect it.

Those who have to use one of the methods of trimming ceiling plinths, the following tips will be useful.

Outer corners are less common than inner corners, and they are much easier to trim. We will now do everything the other way around than when we trimmed the inside corners.

Initially, we need to mark where our corner will begin, and to do this, we put the ceiling plinth to the wall with a marking: now the intersection point of the ceiling plinths will be the upper point of their adjacency, we mark it with a simple pencil and we can begin to make the plinth: to make the left-hand side, we place the plinth in the mortar so that the upper baguette was pressed to the wall, the lower. to the bottom, and the long edge was on the right. Again we cut along the slit with a mark of 45 degrees. The right side corner is prepared on the same principle, only the long edge of the leaf will be on the left.

In the case of rounded corners, no accessories will help us and we will have to do everything by eye.

The easiest way to make such a corner is to cut the skirting board into several parts, about 5 cm each, trim all parts on both sides, check the dock on the spot, adjust if necessary, and glue one by one. The pieces that will join with the baseboard at the beginning and end of the curvature, on one side leave flat. It is important not to mix up the fragments, so you can use a simple pencil to number them.

  • Do not worry that the joints in the ceiling plinth can leave gaps, because they are easy to putty and after drying and painting are invisible. Exceptions are wood ceiling baseboards. even the putty in the tone can be noticeable.
  • Try on the cuts even on the floor, as it is easier than on the stepladder. Do not affix the skirting boards until you are sure you have trimmed them correctly.
  • Do not be upset that something does not work, and the cuts have to fit a few times, have patience and everything will work.

As the saying goes, fear the eyes, but do the hands! If you think about every move, there’s nothing wrong with trimming the baseboard yourself, and a beautifully decorated room will delight the eye of the owner and his guests.

Quality repair involves careful and accurate attention to detail.

Completing the work with the ceiling, you need to decorate it well. for this purpose, ceiling plinths are used. As a rule, the installation of strips does not cause any special difficulties, it will be necessary to tinker with the corners. Let’s consider in detail how to cut a ceiling plinth in the corners, talk about different ways, give useful recommendations

Ceiling skirting boards made of any material can be cut, using one of the following methods. They are suitable for all except for plastic: these are decorated using prefabricated corners.

Useful tips when cutting ceiling plinths

Rules of cutting a baseboard in a jigsaw

There are two things to keep in mind when working with a wire cutter:

The inner corner of the ceiling plinth is formed of two elements: the first bring the right into the chair and cut from right to left, the second bring it to the left and cut from left to right.

Before you start cutting the baguette with a chisel, try to cut a test bar, so as not to make mistakes.

We have familiarized ourselves with the question of how to cut the corners of the ceiling plinth with a jig, using a template or the method of marking. Of course, you can try to cut “by eye”, but then the result will be appropriate. If you follow our instructions, you will promptly and correctly cut the fillet at the right angle.

Selection of tools for cutting ceiling plinths

To properly and accurately cut the ceiling plinth, you need to use the right tool for cutting. It is chosen depending on the material used to make the fillets:

Styrofoam. Characterized by low strength and relatively inexpensive, and therefore foam models are becoming more and more popular. Their strength does not particularly affect the performance, because usually the ceiling plinth is not subjected to mechanical stress. An ordinary office knife is suitable for cutting.

It can be purchased in a construction store or make your own hands according to these instructions:

Three 5015 cm boards are nailed with a long edge into a three-sided rectangular box shape. Note, a 90-degree angle must be maintained between the side bars and the cross plank.

To work with this homemade device was convenient and safe, the boards should be well sanded before stapling.

The first method is by means of a joiner

A professional jigsaw with a rotary hacksaw

The jigsaw usually takes the form of a tray with vertical holes for a hacksaw. It can be made of wood, metal, or plastic. This tool represents the oldest and simplest carpenter’s tool, designed for cutting wooden parts at 90° and 45° angles. There are types of such a device and for professional work, with a rotating mechanism, in which the cutting tool can be rotated and fixed in any position.

How to cut a ceiling plinth

Ceiling corners are divided into internal and external, the method of joining them is slightly different.

If necessary, you can make a chair with your own hands. You will need three scraps of plywood or boards of equal size. First, they are attached in the form of an inverted letter “U” and make a marking of the corners. Then, according to the markings, cut slots under the hacksaw almost to the bottom, and the boards are twisted.

Inner corner

  • Then the boards are properly measured.
  • Install the baseboard plank in the jig so that this position exactly coincided with the placement on the ceiling.
  • The baseboard must be pressed tightly against the opposite wall of the jig. Hold and press down with your free hand.
  • We put a hacksaw at an angle of 45° in a special hole and cut the piece.

When cutting soft materials (PVC, polystyrene foam) use a metal hacksaw or a normal construction knife. Then the work will be neat and with straight edges.

Exterior Corner

  • Measure the length of the skirting board from the nearest wall to the outer corner, leave a trimmer line on the wrong side of the skirting board with a pencil, marking the desired length. Take into account that the edge (its upper part) should protrude a little.
  • The skirting board is moved into a diagonal cutter and cut.
  • Adjacent strip should also measure with a margin and cut in a mirror reflection to the first part.

Try on the ceiling skirting: the joining of parts must be perfectly even. If the result is not achieved and the joints are uneven, you can trim the edges with a regular knife until the perfect join.

What we will cut with?

Before you get to work, you should determine what material the ceiling plinths are made of.

The table. Materials that are used in the manufacture of ceiling plinths.

As a side note! There are special fittings that allow you to facilitate the difficult process of installing the fillets. These are special corners, designed for the insertion of skirting boards in them.

They are useful in that they hide the various errors made when working with the installation of the skirting boards. You only need to cut the skirting at a 90 degree angle, and the corner will do the rest of the work for you. It will disguise the holes and gaps, if any, will give the ceiling a nice look and greatly facilitate the work.

Trimming the corner with a false chisel

The third way to trim the corner of the baseboard is not quite usual. with the use of a kind of false stool. You can make such a “tool” in two ways.

The first is to draw a jig. You can use plain heavy paper or cardboard: draw two parallel lines on the sheet and, using a protractor or a simple angle, set off the angles with the required degree. A corner is cut in much the same way as with the joiner’s plane: hold the skirting board against the “tool”, make the necessary marks and use them to make the cut.

The second method is to make a prototype of a crosscut out of three wooden boards by joining them in the shape of an oblong U-shape and notching them at 45 and 90 degrees. To mark the corners you can use the same protractor.

A chair made of wooden planks

Trimming the corners of the baseboard without a notch, it is very important not to miscalculate the length of the plank and directly to the degree of notch. To avoid mistakes, at first it is better to cut blanks 10 cm longer, then try on the dry to the ceiling and only after that adjust until you get the desired result. In addition, let’s not forget that not all bathrooms have ideal angles of 90 degrees. you still can’t do without adjusting the products.

Tip:. Fix the baseboard to the ceiling only after adjusting the angle of the next baseboard blank. It is best to try the cuts not under the ceiling itself, but on the table. it will take more time, but the cut lines will be more accurate.

Thus, we have several ways of trimming the ceiling plinth: with a joiner’s chisel, without a chisel, using a kind of false chisel. Whatever variant of execution of the corners you have not chosen, it is important to do everything accurately and precisely. only in this case you will get a really effective tool for the final design of the ceiling, thereby making the interior of your bathroom aesthetically complete.
