Weeding with a trimmer. methods of work with a cultivator nozzle

In the arsenal of methods of weed control are increasingly common operations, in which the main role is given not to physical labor, but the use of mechanized means. One of these operations is weeding with trimmer or brushcutter, equipped with a special attachment. a cultivator.

In the set of interchangeable brushcutter attachments manufacturers have recently started to mention such a device as a cultivator or a weeder more often. Unlike classic attachments in the form of discs for mowing grass or a mowing head under a synthetic fishing line for the trimmer cultivator is designed to work directly with the ground. Grass trimmer bit is designed for loosening soil on cultivated areas and partially in places where there is turf cover.

The nozzle on the weeding grass trimmer is put on the boom instead of the lower gearbox. Grass trimmer is converted into a groundkeeper in 1-2 minutes and does not require any additional tools or equipment. The whole process is carried out with the hexagonal keys that are included in the tool kit brushcutter.

The body of the device is collapsible. There are special devices in the housing for adding grease. Body material. aluminum alloy, cutters are made of steel. The shaft on which the cutters are installed is made of steel, forged and the gear is made of bronze.

Grass trimmer operating principle is simple. from a two-stroke engine through the clutch rotational motion is transferred to the shaft in the boom. Further, the motion through the shaft goes to the connection shaft with the worm mechanism, from which starts to rotate the cutter shaft through the bronze gear.

Cutter speed is adjusted by adjusting the engine speed through the throttle knob. the more the carburettor flap opens, the higher the cutter speed.

What blades to put on the electric and lawnmower

Before buying and installing the blade on the brushcutter, let’s find out what they are and when they are used. Today, manufacturers offer the consumer a large number of types of these consumables. In general, all cutting tools designed for grass mowing can be classified:

The main material for making trimmer blades can be plastic or metal. The use of such expendable elements depends largely on two parameters:

For safety reasons, manufacturers do not recommend putting steel knives on electric grass trimmers. Almost all electric and battery-powered trimmers are equipped with blades made of plastic. Depending on the manufacturer, they may be of solid disc shape, with several blades, or in the form of a special mowing head that provides for the installation of removable blades of plastic.

Straight shaft of a gasoline grass trimmer and a curved shaft of an electric one

To put a metal blade on the electric grass trimmer does not allow its design features.

  • The curved boom of the machine reduces the distance from its working part to the mower’s legs. In case of a collision between blades of grass with a stone or other hard objects the brush cutter is thrown back to your feet.
  • The high torque mentioned above is transmitted to the flexible shaft and the motor of the grass trimmer in case of a collision between the metal blade and a hard object. Which causes their premature failure.
  • The handle of an electric grass trimmer usually has no stop bar. That does not exclude foot injury.

Exactly these features allow you to use only plastic knives on trimmers with electric motors. When the blades collide with an obstacle, they collapse, thereby protecting the mower’s legs from possible injury.

Plastic blades handle overgrown and dry grass. They can mow nettles and burdock stems.

Metal blades are only used on petrol-powered trimmers because of their design features.

  • The straight boom design increases the distance to the legs, giving the mower complete safety.
  • Comfortable U-shaped and J-shaped handles let you hold the tool firmly. D-handles of brushcutters are equipped with a limiter that rests against the mower’s leg, which prevents the head from getting too close to the legs when the cutting blade hits a hard obstacle.
  • Gasoline engine clutch delivers smooth speeds to the ground for optimum performance. And when the blade hits a hard surface, it can absorb some of the impact.

Gasoline grass trimmers with a metal blade are therefore best suited for large areas. They can successfully cope not only with high rough grass, weeds, burdocks and nettles, but also bushes and young trees.

The blade shape of the blade on the grass trimmer has no effect on the quality of the work performed. They do not affect the speed. Triangular, trapezoidal, rectangular forms are all a marketing move of the manufacturers.

If you plan to make hay, it is better to use a brushcutter with more blades. Consider discs with eight teeth or discs with four big blades and four extra blades. Two- and three-blade blades will strongly shred the grass.

Types of cultivator attachments for trimmers

Cultivator attachments are good for working small plots of land. Often there are several cutting parts at once. The working width of the blades can be adjusted within the range of 130-250 mm. They have a protective shield to keep debris out. Usage options:

  • Weeding small areas;
  • Digging up the vegetable garden and flowerbeds;
  • Loosening the ground near the trees;
  • hoeing carrots, potatoes, etc.д.

Cultivator nozzles The rotating moment from the engine of the machine is transmitted to the nozzle-cultivator through the shaft in a special bar. it must be bought separately. This unit differs in the number of slots on the end part of the boom. Available with either 7 or 9. An Oleo-Mac tool-cultivator attachment, for example, would not work with a Husqvarna trimmer.

Slotted coupling of the cutters or discs on the shaft is ideal for. It allows free rotation of the cutting units. ideal for cultivation. The soil can be loosened with a broad grip. up to 200-250 mm per pass. When selecting a nozzle, mechanical limitations on drive power must be taken into account. If the implement has a capacity of up to 1,500. Available in 7 or 9 Watts, the cultivator is best suited just for loosening soil or dibbling on seedbeds, potato bushes or ridges.

Construction varieties

Grass trimmer attachments differ in the type of cutting mechanism. The efficiency and quality of the work to be done with a gasoline-powered machine depends on it. Cultivator attachment for grass trimmer comes in two types:

  • Toothed. This type includes a straight row consisting of several curved and sharpened blades. They turn out the earth and open it up. Toothed nozzle is heavy. its weight is up to 5 kg.
  • Disc. These cultivator devices are equipped with several discs, which have fixed blades. The ends of the blades are curved in a certain direction. They have a protective flap on top, which prevents soil from flying out during the work process.

Operating Features

Given the capabilities of the grass trimmer and the attachment itself, work with the attachment is carried out before the period when the weeds have not yet particularly grown and strengthened. So, the work of the user will be more effective, because it is easier to cut low grass, rather than deal with coarse and thick stems. Harrowing the soil in good time helps to speed up the growth and strength of the crop, and increases yields.

It is important to securely attach the mowing head to the petrol grass trimmer. It is important to take into account the fact that not every gardener will be able to work with a brushcutter with a cultivator attachment, the reason for which is the weight of the grass mower and the attachment

If the machine’s engine is not rated at more than 1500 watts, the blower head is good for no more than a ripper or a light hoe. It is important to understand that the mowing head for cultivating the soil with a gasoline mower is no substitute for a machine for weeding, ploughing and hoeing. It is a miniature device for small applications.

Rotating knives are dangerous enough in the process of work, and therefore work with gasoline trimmer should be extremely carefully. No attempt should be made to clear the blades of weeds when the unit is on. Only do this when the engine is at a complete standstill. Never grasp or try to block the blades with your hands. Check the machine in good time, correcting faults and worn parts.

It is important to make sure there is no oil or fuel leakage. Do not overheat the engine

During work, the operator must stay away from the rotating elements, because the cutters can damage limbs. Before you start work, you should inspect the area to be treated and make sure it is free of hard objects. For example, it is desirable to get rid of stones, which can cause a stop, if not breakage of the cutter.

A variety of brushcutter attachments

A large variety of brushcutter attachments are available from specialised dealers. These devices require a grasshopper with a folding bar. Standard head can be removed and replaced with the correct element. When choosing a mowing head it is important to check whether or not the model fits into your existing flail mower. Because different companies make models with different attachment types.

Attachments for brushcutters

All brushcutter attachments are classified according to the task they perform.

Pole Pruner

The Pole Pruner accessory is used for cutting branches and twigs up to 3 metres high. This is made possible by the design of the machine. It consists of a straight bar with a height of 1.5 meters. A small bar and chain is mounted on the boom. Usually chain width varies from 1-3mm. Pole pruner weights usually not more than 2.5 kg. It allows you to work comfortably with the mower for a long time.

Some Pole Pruner blades can be fitted with more efficient guide bars and boom extensions. If components break, they can be replaced individually. To keep the attachment in use for a long time, it is lubricated with oil before use.

Blower for brushcutters

This kind of attachment is used for knocking the leaves off trees in autumn and for sweeping up trash and leaves. It is powered by a powerful compressor that can accelerate the air to a speed of 60 m/sec. Powerful airflow even blows sand away. than 600 cubic meters of air in an hour.

STIHL BR 550 blower

Most models of this type are made of durable plastic. The only exceptions are the compressor and the shorter attachment rod. This design makes it possible to minimize the weight as much as possible. Average weight is 1.5 to 2.5 kg. The blower can be used either with a split bar or using only the brushcutter motor, depending on the model.

Hedge trimmer

This attachment is designed for working on young and small hedges, or for cutting branches on young fruit trees. It is powered by a brushcutter engine.

It has two 50 cm long blades (this varies depending on the model). Blade width 2-2.5 cm. During work, they act like scissors, with a stroke of 2 to 4 cm.

The hedge trimmer can be used in both directions:

The mowing head weighs 2-2,5 kg. Such shears can be used not only for trimming branches and bushes, but also for cutting flowerbeds. High blade speed makes cutting operations much easier. The transition from boom to blade is equipped with a blade guard. It prevents chips from flying out when working on the bar and prevents your hand from slipping on the cutting edge when working without the bar.

Husqvarna 545F brush cutter

Edge cutter

The edge trimmer is designed almost identical to a standard lawnmower head. But here a more curved rod is used. This allows you to effectively level the edges of the lawn and work in areas that are more difficult to reach. This tool uses a head with a semi-automatic line feed system, which allows you to more accurately adjust the width of the mowed field. In most trimmers the width can be set up to 25 cm.

Many models are equipped with special adjustable handles that allow you to increase or decrease the width of the grass mower grip. The weight of such a tool is on average 2.7 kg.

What blades for trimmers there are

It should be noted that when choosing a blade for the grass trimmer, I was a little confused. Blades come in different shapes and sizes, from a simple circle to a four-pointed star. Depending on the material of manufacture, grass trimmer blades come in steel and plastic.

Of course, the metal blade is more reliable than the plastic one. However, if you can notice, it also has a certain “softness”. Made on purpose, so as to reduce the load on the transmission and motor trimmer for grass, which will allow for jamming not to put them out of operation.

It should be noted that discs with peoration are somewhat lighter. Therefore, grass trimmer picks up speed faster when mowing grass than with a solid blade. On cheap brushcutters, the use of a solid disc can cause problems with engine overheating, and even put the grass trimmer out of operation.

Self-Made Knife

The easiest way to make a disc for a grass trimmer is to use a paddle. For this you will need:

  • Part of the pipe (preferably copper rather than steel) with a suitable diameter. from it will be made transition sleeve for the output part of the flexible shaft.
  • Steel plate not more than one millimeter thick (for making the washer).
  • Standard splint (GOST 297-66) (fixing the base in the shaft).
  • Stainless steel strips (thickness from 1 to 1,2 mm) (blade blades themselves).
  • Fixing element (it is preferable to use rivets rather than nuts/screws, even though they come with the machine as spare parts).
  • Firstly, the total dimensions of the fixture should be marked out so that they do not go beyond the protective cover when cut out. Then the sleeve can be fabricated from the pipe.
  • To improve the fit, the bushing is split and shrunk along the outer surface of the trimmer shaft. Since the diameter of the washer can only be determined by the dimensions of the available space, it is also possible to choose from the closest possible sizes.
  • A washer must be welded to the sleeve so that the resulting joint cathetus occupies a minimum of space.
  • It is better to produce the blades on a milling machine, paying special attention to the sharp edges and corners. they should not bend excessively during their subsequent sharpening.
  • Rivet fasteners with a small vertical play will allow high-quality cutting, especially from dead wood.
  • In order to prevent mashing of the blades in the case of their possible expansion from heat, you must carefully check the existence of gaps (not less than 1.5 millimeters) between the blades and the pipe.
  • The last step is to securely fasten the entire structure to the shaft with a cotter pin.

Plastic discs on the grass trimmer. when to use

If metal milling and paddle discs are used on gasoline trimmers, then it is recommended to use plastic circles for electric tools. Their main advantage is their low weight, so the load on the electric motor is completely eliminated. Structurally, the nozzle is a plastic base, on which the blades are mounted along the perimeter. Blades are made of soft plastic, which bends without deforming when in contact with obstacles. Blades are mounted on a circular base at a 120 degree angle.

They are designed to cut dense grass with electric trimmers when a trimmer blade cannot cut it. If the mowing head has a high moment of inertia, it can be reduced by making symmetrical holes. When the teeth are blunted, they must be sharpened at an angle of 30 degrees, using a grinding wheel with low or medium roughness.

disc design Application Characteristics
Perforated cutter with 40 tines Gentle cut of lawn and tall grass. Great for mowing grass in fields and wooded areas Eliminates grass winding on disc and low gearbox load. High efficiency in large quantities of grass
Perforated cutter with more than 40 tines (60-80) For small trees with a stem thickness of 7-8 cm Suitable for cutting the grass with small growing trees
Blade with 8 to 32 teeth Cut thin and tough bushes of raspberries, currants. Cope effectively with grass mowing, but only with powerful equipment Effective at cutting small brush stems. Cause stress on the gearbox
Blade with one, two, and three blades Tough grass, thistles Breaks the grass several times, shredding it, which increases the load on the gearbox
V-blade with 4 or more knives Bristle brush and tough grass cutter, can be used for making hay Has a low moment of inertia
Plastic discs For smaller and denser lawns Does not stress the electric motors of trimmers
