Vibratory plate with their own hands: technical availability and quality assurance
Coordinated and very fast action of machines on a large construction site seems. Just yesterday a huge bucket was digging into the ground, and today there is already the first level of the future building. On large construction sites. But even if you need to put a summer house, the principles are the same: first you need to prepare the ground, ram it. Buying expensive mechanisms for short-term use is impractical. The vibratory plate with their own hands. a real and affordable solution.
The vibratory plate is a special unit designed for compacting soils, concrete surfaces, asphalt surfaces
Selection criteria for the machine
Several conditions affect the quality of work. To get an excellent result you need to consider all the properties of the model and choose a site compactor, focusing on the tasks facing the unit.
Characteristics by weight
This is the main quality of the vibrator for compacting any surface, which affects the performance of the task. This is something to pay special attention to when buying or making a homemade vibratory plate. With their own hands assembled device is often skewed towards one feature, so it is necessary to understand all the characteristics of the mechanism.
By weight, the devices for vibratory ramming are distributed as follows:
- Light models weighing up to 75 kilograms are suitable for working on surfaces with a small (up to 15 centimeters) layer of soil: paths in the garden, yard area for laying tiles or mats.
- The medium ones with a thickness of up to 25 cm are quite universal. They can equally effectively cope with non-weighty works, help in the laying of asphalt and paving tiles. Their weight is in the range of 75-90 kg.
- Medium-duty vibrators weighing up to 140 kg and with a compaction depth of up to 60 cm are well-suited for use on site for pouring foundations and reinforcing bottom trenches, as well as for laying multiple layers of asphalt pavement.
- Heavy plates do the same work as the previous ones and weigh more than 140 kg.
The balance between the weight of the platen and the power of the power plant is the main thing that affects the performance of the device. Skewed toward the weight of the plate will sink the installation in the ground, low weight with excessive force on the ground will not reach the desired density of the surface. A ratio of 100 kilograms of plate weight to 5 horsepower is considered optimal.
In addition to the basic, there are other characteristics that you need to pay attention to. They have just as much influence on the efficiency and control of the machine:
The level of oscillating movements that exert pressure on the metal plate is called the vibratory force. The denser the ground, the higher the ratio should be.
The strength of the pressure of the slab per unit area to be treated depends on the size of the substrate.
Fuel consumed by vibratory rammers is traditional. gasoline, diesel and electric power. All professionals recognize the advantage of a stove with a gasoline engine. They are unpretentious about working conditions, their cost is in the middle, if you compare them with their counterparts. Diesel units are the most expensive and noisy ones. The only advantage is the economical engine. Electric tool is the cheapest, it doesn’t lag behind gasoline tools in performance, but it is tied to the mains.
Lightweight vibrators have the most balanced power. The range of works they perform does not imply serious characteristics for the equipment. A motor with power appropriate to the nature of the work and the weight of the sole will drive itself, and the operator will only have to set the direction.
All the vibrating machines have accessories that make it easier to work or give extra protection. In order to move the machine to a new place of work, the wheels and the folding handle make this task easy.
Various guards protect the machine from debris from the ramming area. The slab wetting system is effective when rolling hot asphalt. Without it, it will stick to the top layer.
Reinforcing trench bottoms or ramming in narrow places is almost impossible without reverse motion.
The main work item is a heavy metal platform, which can be made of gray ductile iron or steel. The vibration effect is transmitted by a mechanical vibrator driven by a gasoline, diesel or electric engine.
A sturdy handle is provided to control the vibratory plate as it moves across the work site. Additional equipment, such as a fuel tank and electric starter, is available. The engine and the vibrating unit are mounted on a frame, which is directly attached to the ramming platform.
Rules of operation
Everyone wants his equipment to work as long as possible and not to break. In the case of the vibrating device for this you need to follow the rules that apply to both homemade and branded device:
- Every time before starting work, the machine should be thoroughly inspected. If you find cracks, loose connections, do not start using the equipment until the deficiencies are eliminated.
- The gasoline engine needs more care than any other component. Inspection and cleaning of spark plugs and checking of oil level must be done regularly.
- The vibratory plate also needs attention. If there is no oil, the eccentrics and bearings break down.
- The machine itself must be kept free of dirt.
- Do not transport a running vibrator.
- Do not use the equipment on hardened asphalt or concrete.
What is a vibratory plate?
Compaction of various loose substrates is indispensable for construction work. For crushed rock, sand, soil and other similar materials.
Basically, these are the stages of preparation for pouring concrete, asphalt, laying tiles or building a foundation.
In order to mechanize the tamping process the so-called vibratory plates are used. The mechanism of their action is quite simple.
The device creates vibrations which cause the fine particles of the compacting layer to be brought as close as possible to each other, thus displacing the excess air and leaving a level surface with the required density at the finish line.
Buy such a machine for yourself rather unprofitable. Homemade vibratory plate is much more profitable.
Advantages of a home-made tamping machine
The main advantage of a handmade vibratory plate is its low cost and the ability to perform quality and efficient work. The simple design ensures the reliability and durability of the mechanism. In addition, homemade vibratory plate allows:
- Safely perform tamping any surface;
- reduce the amount of manual labor in the performance of works;
- improve the quality of the foundations of walkways and grounds;
- Compact dry cement and semi-dry concrete mixes well when paving them.
Having a mechanism for compacting loose soils and bulk materials will allow you to perform any amount of work on landscaping and exterior design.
What a vibratory plate consists of
Before you start making a vibratory plate with your own hands, you need to make a drawing of it. To do this, you need to know what parts the technique consists of.
Any modern vibratory plate consists of several elements:
The working plate is made mostly of cast iron, and its characteristics are determined by the quality of this material.
Poor quality cast iron can be covered with cracks when working with sand and gravel mixes.
These types of soil contain small stones, which in the process of tamping pressure point to the surface of the plate.
The size of the working surface is also important. When the slab has the right geometry, its surface is able to clean itself without leaving any residual soil on it.
The smaller the work plate surface, the better the compaction of the ground.
Therefore, when making a vibratory plate with your own hands, it is better to make the surface a smaller area, if it will not reduce the vibration properties.
The vibro unit is attached to the slab, so all connections and attachment nodes must be assembled particularly carefully.
All parts must be made of high quality and durable materials. High vibration and a certain weight set the level of impact on the ground.
The seal of the vibrating unit should prevent leakage of the lubricating fluid, prevent dust and dirt, as well as withstand continuous loads.
The drive of the vibratory plate is carried out by the transfer of energy from the electric motor.
For better work in the vibrating machines, an internal combustion engine is used, which has the maximum power and performs tamping in all conditions.
What you can make yourself
Consider the instructions for making a vibratory plate for laying paving tiles. Therefore I am sure that the following instruction will be interesting to many people.
To compact the sand backfill to a depth of at least 20 cm, the finished unit must weigh at least 80 kg. If the weight of the construction is less, the rammer will be difficult to hold, but it will not have the required effect on the ground.
You can use a car trailer to transport equipment with a weight of 80 kg or more.
Materials and tools
A welding machine, an angle grinder with metal cutting discs, a drill with a set of drills, clamps, a sledgehammer, and a measuring tool will be needed to make a rammer. A list of materials and accessories is shown in the following table:

To avoid burning of the winding or melting of the insulation, you must install a RCD or at least an ordinary circuit breaker (circuit breaker).
Thinner metal is needed for the manufacture of the motor mounting plate.
In order to make the vibrator shaft rotate quickly, the pulley on the motor must have three times the diameter of the pulley on the shaft.
In addition, a tube of the same inner diameter as the bearing outer diameter is needed.
Assembling the rammer
Note that an electric motor will be used as the drive. But in the same way, an internal combustion engine can be installed on the assembled construction. The fact that the scheme of installation of electric motors and internal combustion engines is the same, since the motor is attached to the site with several bolts.
To change the number of plates, through holes can be drilled in the shaft cylinder. The same holes are drilled in the plates that are attached to the shaft with bolts and nuts.
On the plate, as shown in the photo, cut notches for the adjusting screws and weld the hinges.
On the opposite side of the frame a vertical stud is welded, which has to go through the slots in the slanted plate.
Then, when you tighten the tension, the plate will be lifted by tightening the nuts up.
In total, there should be four shock absorbers. one for each corner of the frame.
- Screw the motor with the installed pulley to the assembled frame with the swivel cover;
- We pass the belt through the pulleys and make sure that the construction is correctly assembled.
A rectangle is cut out along the made markings and fastened to the work surface of the workbench with clamps.
Use an angle grinder to cut each of the four corners on the plate, as shown in the photo.
An incision about 2/3 of the sheet thickness is made along the line.
Using a sledgehammer along the cut, bend the plate to create the edge of the ski, as shown in the photo.
By the way, the bends are needed on both sides for the front and back of the machine.
