Oil for brushcutter. how to choose, in what proportions to dilute. What kind of gasoline is needed for the grass trimmer and how much oil to use? How to fill up your petrol grass trimmer
The grass trimmer specifications contain references to recommended fuels and lubricants. In this case, the octane number of gasoline brand specified, but in respect of oils is a lengthy explanation of the need to use a product of a particular manufacturer. For the sake of clarity, it is pointed out that the warranty is valid only if these recommendations are followed. What is it: A marketing ploy or other manufacturers’ oils do not meet the requirements?? The answer is in this article.
Two-stroke engine has a simple and, at the same time, extremely effective design:
- The piston stroke is every second stroke;
- the cylinder is lubricated by oil dissolved in gasoline;
- The combustion products are removed by compression, without any special mechanism.
All this has resulted in a family of small engines that have been successfully adapted for domestic and professional equipment:
For design reasons, it has only been possible to achieve the desired fuel consumption with small engines in the range of 15 to 20 hp.forces. This figure looks particularly good in the range of 1. 5 liters.с. Here the low weight and dimensions of the engine are fully in line with the consumption of gasoline.
As the size increases, so does the inlet and outlet area. The gas evacuation and fuel supply is sharply impaired. This necessitated the transition to a more efficient system of combustion of the gasoline mixture, which would include the presence of forced maintenance of the engine. Four-stroke models have taken over the palm of the high-powered engines. Combining them into multi-cylinder designs allowed the creation of special systems related to the formation of the composition of the fuel mixture, lubrication, etc., which had a favorable effect on gasoline consumption.
Lubrication of the rubbing elements of the piston and cylinder of a two-stroke engine is oil, which is in a certain proportion in the composition of the fuel. Gasoline burns and oil settles on the surface of the cylinder, reducing friction of the rubbing parts. Underlubrication causes damage to the cylinder and can even lead to seizure. In case of overdosing, under the influence of high temperatures, the thermally modified product deposits in the ring grooves. Compression goes down and so does power.
How to mix oil with gasoline
Engine oils are used to add to the gasoline for grass trimmer. Mixing is done in a certain proportion. Producers have different volume ratios: from 1 to 50 to 1 to 20. There is a reference to this in the technical data sheet. Care should be taken with small shares of oils. A slight inaccuracy leads to oil starvation of the engine, reduces its service life.
There are products that specify a proportion of 1 to 20-40. It is better to refrain from using such lubricants. A wide range of the mixture indicates the low quality of the product. Piston ring lodging, if such grades are constantly used, is practically guaranteed.
Motor oils, such as M-8, are added in a proportion of 1-20. In high-speed engines, their use is undesirable. The cycle between feed mixtures is so small that it will cause an overabundance of lubricant in the cylinder. Grass trimmers have small revolutions, so they allow the use of low-grade grease. Because of the inherently low life span, you don’t have to worry about ring caking. Before there is complete wear and tear on the equipment.
The principle is not to use the recommended oil or from other manufacturers. The main thing is to dilute petrol with oil for grass trimmer in proportions according to the characteristics of the product. Denial of warranty by the service workshops only on the basis of using a different brand of grease, but with permissible parameters, is illegal.
Today, there are few people left who use an ordinary scythe on their homestead. This “old-fashioned” method is almost never used. And many have no idea how to handle it, to sharpen and rivet. With the development of technology, there are devices called trimmers for grass.
There are two main types of these devices. These are gasoline and electric. From the name it is clear that their main difference is the power source. Each type has both advantages and disadvantages. The advantage of gasoline-powered is the absence of a cord for power, which does not limit the owner in moving around the site during the work. Electric trimmer needs 220 V mains for power. There is no way to do without an extension cord, which will always get in the way and get tangled underfoot.
Modern trimmer for the grass, which runs on fuel, thanks to the presence of various interchangeable heads of the ordinary grass trimmer has turned into a means of small-scale mechanization with multiple functions. By installing the appropriate nozzle, the owner will not have any difficulty in shaping the crown of shrubs on a personal garden plot. In the snowy winter it can be used as a snowplow. Changing the working heads is very time-saving and can be done with or without a tool.
What grass trimmer oil to choose?
When using a device such as a gasoline grass trimmer, maintenance is particularly difficult. When it is time to change oil, many people don’t know what kind of oil to use in a trimmer.
In each case, it all depends on the type of grass trimmer engine. In its majority, it is similar, but of higher power, used in the manufacture of mopeds. Therefore, it is necessary to use oils for trimmers, which are marked 2T.
In most devices of this kind, oil is filled with gasoline. Therefore, the owner must be sure to know, when using a grass trimmer, the ratio of gasoline to oil. In most cases, 20 grams of oil per liter of fuel. The higher the quality of the fuel, the lower the oil consumption.
There are also 4-stroke engines for trimmers. In these trimmer oils are poured into a separate container, which does not cause any particular difficulties. One of the main advantages of these devices is their low noise, which allows you to work without headphones. Oils for trimmers with the marking 4T, which must be paid attention to.
It is recommended to buy unleaded gasoline to operate your garden equipment. Otherwise there is a risk of engine failure. Manufacturers recommend a fuel with an octane rating of at least A-90, preferably A-92 or A-95. Please consult the instruction manual for your tool to determine the proper oil to use for your particular tool. At the filling station, fill the canister with the required amount of fuel. Metal containers are recommended, as they contain no static electricity produced by friction, increasing operational safety.
Use branded oils for two-stroke engines, preferably API-TB or API-TC. The manufacturer should indicate the recommended oils in the instruction manual of the tool. Also note their composition. Mineral oils are suitable for use in warm weather. Synthetics are better, they are less viscous and can be used even in freezing temperatures. Semi-synthetic. these are mineral oils with improved qualities, universal for any season. For the temperature limit of operation, see the package. Also pay attention to the volume. It is not the proportion of gasoline and oil for a chainsaw that matters, but how much fuel mixture you will need for one filling and how often you will work with the tool. If you have a grass trimmer or chain saw in your arsenal, and you use one or the other tool several times a week, it makes sense to buy a big canister of oil of 3 to 5 liters. For several mowing in a country season, it is enough to take a bottle of 1 liter.
Mixing oil with gasoline
When you start working with a tool, there is always the question of how much oil to add to gasoline for a chainsaw or grass trimmer. It is important to remember that for two-stroke engines the ratio is 1:50, t.е. 100 ml of oil per 5 liters of fuel. Why it is important to keep the proportions? The most important thing is to keep the oil in the proper mixing ratio, so that it does not overload the pistons and spark plugs, and insufficient oil reduces the lubricating power of the fuel mixture, which leads to burrs on the piston group and increases the risk of engine damage.
The easiest way to follow the gasoline and oil proportions for a chainsaw is to use measuring jugs. They are marked with a scale and easy to follow. Before pouring gasoline and oil in, make sure the container is clean. Avoid getting water and dirt inside. it can affect the quality of the fuel mixture. First pour in the gasoline as needed, then pour the oil as needed. Tilt the container several times to mix the liquids. The fluids will mix quickly and the mixture will take on a uniform color, e.g., green or red (depending on the oil composition).
Good to know! Never use plastic drink bottles for storing and mixing the fuel mixture. Gasoline corrodes plastic. Even if the walls of the bottle seem to be intact, harmful components will enter the fuel mixture and with it the engine. It is very bad for the carburetor.
Wearing gloves is recommended to protect your hands from the gasoline and oil. Do not forget about the elementary rules of fire safety. mix liquids outdoors so that gasoline vapors do not accumulate indoors. Do not smoke while working and exclude other factors that can cause inflammation of fuel and lubricants.
Pour the blend you have prepared into the fuel tank and close the cap tightly. If you have blended more than you can use at one time, empty it into a separate canister for storage or leave it in the blending tank. The main thing is to close the cap tightly. The mixture may be stored for up to two weeks and used for refueling without risk to the engine. The only condition is not to leave it in the fuel tank. If you will not use the tool for a long time. use up the leftovers completely or drain them.
Now you know how to dilute gasoline for a chainsaw so as not to damage the engine. Try and do it yourself. After you prepare the fuel mixture a few times, it will be clear what quantity of components will be needed, so that there is no excessive mixture. Buy everything you need in our online store. With brand-name oils your tool will last a long time.
Gasoline for a four-stroke engine
Devices with a four-stroke motor are more complex. Oil and gasoline are poured into separate containers, from where they are then pumped into the engine. For a mower with such a motor you need gasoline brands AI-92 and AI-95. It is best not to use fuel with a lower octane rating because it makes the engine unstable.к. You might get unstable engine performance. In addition, you can not use a lubricant designed for two-stroke models.
The ready mixture of gasoline and oil can be stored for no more than 3 months (pure gasoline keeps less). Dilute enough fuel for several uses of the grass trimmer. In general, prepare:
How to Choose the Right Fuel for Your Mower
- Gasoline and oil suitable for two-stroke engines with air cooling system;
- metal canister and mixing container;
Adding oil to gasoline
- Pour 1 liter of gasoline into a container of suitable volume, and add 1/2 the desired amount of oil.
- Mix gently, at a reasonable distance from open flames.
- Add the rest of the oil to the fuel and mix everything again.
Grass trimmer fueling process
General recommendations for fueling a grass trimmer with a two- or four-stroke engine:
- Position the fuel tank so that the lid is on top, then pour in the required amount of fuel.
- Do not overfill the fuel tank. This will lead to one of the problems: overflow into the intake manifold and fuel filter, ignition of the fuel or engine failure.
- Try to pour the mixture in such a way that it does not spill. You can use a watering can for this.
- If you do spill fuel, wipe it off immediately. Dispose of cleaning cloths, do not pile them indoors as they are a fire hazard.
- The unit should be started after the fuel canister has been removed more than 10 meters away.
- If there has been a long break between mower runs, be sure to drain any remaining old fuel.
What kind of gasoline should be used for 2-stroke machines
My advice to you. never listen to “Petrovich” or “Mikhalych” from the neighboring garage, because he worked for 10 years on the “Kamaz”. For you, the most important and authoritative advisor should be the instruction manual that comes with absolutely every chainsaw or brushcutter. In any manual “black and white” indicates the type of fuel that you need to fill your equipment.
So, no matter what “Petrovich” with “Mikhalych” told you, machinery manufactures know better than they do what kind of gasoline their saws and grass scythes are designed for. So don’t be lazy, take out the manual and read it. From myself, I would add that most of the two-stroke equipment are designed for gasoline brand A-92, but there are some models for which the manufacturer recommends using the 95th gasoline.
Once again, strongly, I recommend not to play “guessing”. but look in the instruction manual, because using the fuel that is not designed to run your equipment can lead to overheating and various costly damages.
How to mix (dilute) petrol and oil for 2T engines.
Let us summarize the above. Use for your brand name equipment the oil designed by or recommended by the machine manufacturer. For example, for the STIHL FS 55 brushcutter, use STIHL HP oil (see Figure 1b). Figure 1a) or STIHL HP SUPER, for the Husqvarna 128R brushcutter use Husqvarna HP oil (Figure 1b) or Husqvarna LS oil. For 2.Do not use 4-stroke motor oils for the following engines. e.g. 10W30, SAE 30, etc.д.
Figure 1 a-Husqvarna oil (left), STIHL oil (right)
Never use 2-stroke oil intended for water-cooled engines, as these oils are designed to operate at lower temperatures.
The proportions of oil and gasoline for the fuel mixture specified by the manufacturers in the instruction manual must be observed. Chinese manufacturers most commonly specify a ratio of 1 part oil to 25 parts gasoline, and STIHL and Husqvarna specifies a ratio of 1/ 50.When mixing small amounts of oil (up to 1 liter) it is important to carefully measure the oil in the mixture. Even small miscalculations in the amount of oil can lead to serious inconsistencies in the mixture. In these cases a medicine syringe can be used for accurate dispensing. It is necessary to prepare fuel mixture in a clean container intended for this purpose. (see Fig. Fig. 2)
Do not use plastic jerrycans and bottles, because gasoline can dissolve plastics and sludge from the jerrycans will get into the fuel tank and cause damage to the carburettor.
Plastic canisters designed for gasoline are always marked with the “flame” sign. It is very convenient to use a canister with a no-fill system (see Fig. 3). figure 3). The no-fill system has a valve that prevents fuel from spilling when the tank is full.

STIHL which petrol to use. 92 or 95??
We’ll talk about gasoline. Which one is better to pour.Ai-92 or Ai-95.
Let’s think if it is possible to pour 92 instead of 95? What will be the consequences for the engine?? Let’s also remember.
There is also a way: pour half of the tank of Ai-95, and the other half as much as Ai-92. The dynamics of such a “mixture” will not be affected at all. But inside the engine it can cause damage. During the ignition of high-octane fuel in an engine with a low compression ratio, the combustion temperature will increase. It’s bound to burn through the exhaust valves. The higher is the octane number, the slower will the fuel burn. Modern cars have the ability to adapt to it with a special ignition system, but low-octane gasoline will increase consumption and reduce engine power.
It’s easier for you with gasoline.you can fill up with 95 gasoline in japan. You can also fill up with 92 gasoline instead of 95. But because of the lower octane number the fuel consumption of the engine will increase. Combustion of the mixture will be disturbed. The speed at which the flame front spreads will increase to 1500-2000 m/s. Inevitably waves will hit the walls in the combustion chamber. There will be a characteristic metal sound. Shock waves will cause vibration of parts inside the engine and their wear and tear will greatly increase.
Don’t refuel at dubious gas stations. Outdated equipment, inconvenient location of the filling station, poor service. do not cover the cheapness of the fuel they sell. You are likely to have to pay a lot of money for an engine or fuel system repair in the future if you refuel with one of these.
Many modern cars are equipped with engine detonation prevention systems. The fuel lines and engine are tested for a specific type of gasoline. And if you fill up with other fuel, the car assemblies may work improperly under load and require servicing quicker. That’s why it’s best to fill your tank with the manufacturer’s recommended gasoline.
There may also be a punctured ignition coil in the electrical system. If the lawnmower does not start or starts intermittently and then shuts down or does not start on hot water at all.
Check the coil condition in the same way as for spark check: unscrew the spark plug, lean it against the body of the weed trimmer. If there is no spark or it appears intermittently when you jerk the starter, change the coil.
Preparing the fuel mixture: proportion of oil and gasoline for a chainsaw
The chainsaw engine is the “heart” of the tool, so it is very important to use the right fuel mixture.
Chain saw fuel mixture is made of two components. oil and gasoline. Chainsaws are equipped with a two-stroke engine, so oil is not added to the lubrication system (like a four-stroke engine), but directly to the gasoline. It is very important to observe the correct proportions of ingredients and of course not to try to run on pure gasoline, because that way you will “kill” the chainsaw very quickly.
Always use oil for two-stroke engines of gardening and forestry equipment (i.e. never use oil for boat motors or scooters). As practice shows, you can buy such oil in any store or service center, where chainsaws are sold or serviced.
If we talk about what gasoline to fill a chainsaw, it would be optimal to use fuel with the octane number of A-95, in this case, the savings on fuel can turn out badly. European manufacturers often indicate that you can use gasoline A-90 or A-92, but in post-Soviet countries, the quality of gasoline inferior to the European, so in our reality it is better to use a higher-quality gasoline.
As for the petrol-oil mixture ratio itself, everything is simple: you need to follow the instructions of the tool clearly. All chainsaw manufacturers indicate the correct ratio in the owner’s manual or in the machine’s manual, and the proportions for filling your chainsaw may also vary depending on the model of chain saw. As a rule, the ratio of oil and gasoline in a chain saw of famous manufacturers is 1:40 or 1:50, which means one part of oil to, for example, 40 parts of gasoline.
Now the arithmetic: 1 liter of gasoline = 1000 ml of gasoline, divide by 40 and you get 25 ml of oil. If you do the same for a 1:50 ratio you get 20 ml of oil for 1 liter of gasoline.
As for budget Chinese-made chainsaws, the situation is a little different. Gasoline to oil ratio for chainsaws made in China 1:25, so we divide 1000 ml of gasoline by 25, we get 40 ml of oil. The thing is that in branded chainsaws the solid build and distance between pistons and cylinders in the engine is much less than in Chinese chainsaws, that’s why the required oil amount is twice as much different.
In order to measure the correct portion of oil, use an ordinary medical syringe of sufficient volume.
One more subtlety. pour petrol into a dry gasoline canister first, then oil. The procedure on the contrary is fraught with poor quality fuel mixture, because the oil is denser, will stick to the bottom of the canister. That’s why there is no way to talk about good mixing.
Be sure to prepare the fuel mixture in the canister and fill the gas tank already ready special fuel! Never prepare and mix it directly in the fuel tank of the chainsaw!
If the question of how to dilute gasoline for a chainsaw is solved, then and about storage conditions and shelf life of the fuel mixture it is worth saying a few words. It is best and easiest to prepare gasoline-oil mixture for 1 liter of gasoline, it is recommended to do it just before working with the tool. Gasoline fuel tanks in chainsaws have capacities of 0.3 to 1 liter. In residential use, the entire volume of the prepared combustible mixture is rarely used in a single session, so the remainder can be saved until the next session. Store the fuel mixture should be in a special canister for gasoline, in a dry, dark place. It is optimal to calculate that storage time of the ready mixture will be 7-10 days
The fact is that the oil currently on the market is not synthetic, but organic, that is natural. After 10 days all lubricating properties are lost, gasoline simply “eats up” the oil. Naturally, it is no longer possible to use such fuel, it can cause breakdown and failure of the chainsaw.
At the end of work it is necessary to drain the fuel mixture and start the chainsaw. the tool will stall (so that the saw has a dry carburetor) and now you can leave it until the next session of operation.
