Running in a chain saw and other tools STIHL
The days of the first chain saws (“Ural” and “Druzhba”) in our country are gone. Gone are the days when questions like “How to run-in a chainsaw” were relevant. STIHL machines don’t need a running-in period. Quite! No. Even if you are told to break it in by the man at the market where you buy it.
By the way if you buy STIHL tools on the market it means you are 99,99999% sure you are not buying a STIHL tool but its Chinese replica. First of all, this tool is sold only at official retail outlets, through the manufacturer’s website and a small number of certified partners’ websites. Secondly, no company manager will tell you about the need to do a cold start and running-in STIHL chain saw. Why? Let’s look a little more closely below.
How to run in a STIHL chain saw
The chain saw came off the assembly line and was delivered to the workshop, where it was assembled, oil and fuel mixture were poured, checked, turned on and secured in a special gasoline tool running-in chamber, which is located there, at the factory, next to the conveyor. During the specified time, it passes a “hot” running-in to the complete lapping of nodes and mechanisms to each other. in fact, this is the purpose of running-in and the best way to run-in STIHL chain saw. So, as soon as you buy it, fill it up and pour oil. and right away to the fight! Work for 10-15 minutes, rest for 5 minutes, then 15-30 minutes, then rest again. After 3-5 tanks of gasoline, it will gain maximum power, and you can work on the regulation on the technical data sheet time.
Similar to the above described procedure, it is also not possible to run-in a STIHL brushcutter or STIHL brush cutter or even a STIHL ride-on shredder. Yes, other manufacturers may recommend it, but in this case with STIHL it would only be a waste of time and your resources (effort, fuel, oil).
If you want to run in your STIHL machine (whether it is running in a STIHL rotary cutter or a STIHL paver or something else) we would only recommend running it in for the parts you have replaced as a result of a routine replacement or repair. In a lawn mower, for example, such a replacement may have been necessary:
How to run-in a STIHL lawnmower in this case? Give it a gentle run for 30 to 60 minutes and cut out particularly tough grass stems and debris which generally cause damage.
How to run in the STIHL rotary blower
The blower is also referred to as a garden vacuum cleaner. This is a very handy tool, which in a few minutes can get rid of light debris and fallen leaves because of the garden plot (usually 30-50 sq.m.).м.). As with all STIHL power tools, it is precisely run in at the factory so that it does not need to be run in again. Only in the first days of work give him a reduced load, you can not immediately let it “in the fight” at 100%.
Ratio of amount of oil to petrol for fuel mixture
In order for a two-stroke chainsaw engine to work in an optimal mode, oil and gasoline must be mixed in certain proportions. These ratios are usually found in the instruction manual and on the lubricant carton. Let’s consider briefly what will happen if you do not observe the recommended ratios or break them by mistake (ignorance).
If you add too little oil to the gasoline, its concentration will not be sufficient to effectively lubricate the rubbing parts. The engine will make a ringing sound, heat up excessively, and quickly fail. A lot of oil is also bad, as the excess will not be able to burn fully. This will lead to the formation of soot on the cylinder walls and piston, contamination of the spark plugs, the exhaust system. Also the power will drop, fuel consumption will increase, and there will be excessive smokiness of the exhaust during operation.
To avoid these problems, oil and gasoline must be mixed in the proportions recommended by the manufacturer. They are stated as ratios. 1:50, 1:40, 1:25 and so on. Any of these proportions tells you how much oil to pour per volume of fuel. For example, to make a 1:25 mixture, you will need 1 liter of oil per 25 liters of gasoline.
It is important not to confuse the two! Quite often the indicated proportions are perceived by users in the opposite way. For example, 1:50 is understood to mean 50 milliliters of oil per liter of gasoline. It is a gross mistake which will lead to a higher concentration of oil in the fuel. In fact, this ratio requires only 20 milliliters of oil for 1 liter of oil.
How not to confuse the proportions? After all, very few people need to prepare 50, or even 25 liters of fuel mixture for a chainsaw. All the more so, that you can not store gasoline mixed with oil for a long time. Usually prepare as much as you need for a day or two. And taking into account the small consumption of the chainsaw, this is 1-5 liters.
There are three ways to properly dilute gasoline for a chain saw in small volumes:
- Divide 1000 by the second number in the proportion. For example, you need to prepare a mixture in a ratio of 1:40. Divide 1000 by 40, you get 25. This is how many milliliters of oil you pour into one liter of gasoline.
- Solve the proportion, like in school. To do this, divide the required volume of gasoline in liters by the second digit in the proportion. As a result, we get the necessary volume of oil in liters. Let’s convert from liters to milliliters for your convenience. Let’s say you need 3 liters of mixture in the ratio of 1:50. We solve: 3/50=0.06 liters. To turn liters into milliliters, move the comma three digits to the right and you get 60 milliliters.
- Look at the table. This is the easiest, fastest and most obvious way if the proportions are standard. The other two methods are needed to understand why you need to pour 20 milliliters of oil per liter of gasoline, not 50, in the 1:50 proportion.
Now briefly about why the proportions differ from manufacturer to manufacturer and why there is no single standard. There are at least three reasons for that. First, the different characteristics of oils and gasoline. Secondly, the quality of engine assembly (technology, materials) is also different. Third, the mode of operation of the tool. For example, for chain saws of some manufacturers it is recommended to add 20% more oil in the mix for running-in.
The alternative fuel option
For chainsaws for household and professional use it is recommended to use auto gasoline AI-92 without alcohol components and additives.
Whether it is possible to fill in the gasoline of the 95-th gasoline in a chainsaw till now remains a debatable question. Theoretically, the anti-detonation properties of gasoline AI-95 are higher than those of standard fuel AI-92, but in practice it is better to give preference to the second version.
The problem is that in order to improve the anti-detonation characteristics in the composition of the 95th gasoline manufacturers and sellers introduce additives, the quality and effectiveness of which raise reasonable doubts among experts.
Such fuel does not fully meet the required specifications, does not have proper stability during long storage. After 3 to 4 months of ageing its working properties deteriorate by 25-30%.
In order to prepare fuel properly, you will need a list of additional tools:
- A plastic or metal container to dilute the substance;
- A measuring bottle for gasoline;
- A dispenser;
- A pouring tube into the gasoline saw’s tank.
Some manufacturers, like STIHL, have measuring jugs for easy measuring of fuel.
Different makers make oil in different tints. HP manufacturer makes red fluid. Green oil is a premium synthetic oil. You need the right oil for your Husqvarna chain saw. It is high cost, good quality and has a green or blue color.
What kind of gasoline should be used for 2-stroke machines
My advice to you. never listen to “Petrovich” or “Mikhalych” from the neighboring garage, because he spent 10 years working on the “Kamaz”. The instruction manual, which comes with every chainsaw and brushcutter, should be your main and most authoritative source of advice. In every manual it is stated black and white what kind of fuel you have to put into your machine.
And that is why, no matter what “Petrovich” with “Mikhalych” told you, equipment manufacturers know better than they do what kind of gasoline their saws and grass scythes are designed for. So don’t be lazy, get the manual and read. From myself, I would add that most of the two-stroke equipment are designed for gasoline brand A-92, but there are some models, for which the manufacturer recommends using the 95th gasoline.
Once again, I strongly recommend not playing “guessing”. And watch the instruction manual, as the use of fuel that is not designed to work your technique can lead to overheating and various costly failures.
Choosing chain oil for chainsaws
In addition to the motor, the chainsaw has another important component with many moving parts. the chain. It is not engine oil, but chain saw oil, which is cheaper and has completely different properties.
What chain oil to use for a chainsaw depends on its “age”. If your chainsaw is new and under warranty, you will have to use ONLY brand-name oils recommended by the manufacturer. Otherwise your dealer will take your saw out of warranty immediately if it breaks down, because it is best to change it twice a year: in winter and summer use a thicker oil, and in summer use a thicker oil.к. it is a violation of the operating conditions to use lubricants that do not meet the manufacturer’s requirements. On the other hand, brand name oils are really high quality:
- allows for operation in a wide temperature range from.30 to 50 C,
- High adhesion improves oil “sticking” to the chain and reduces oil consumption;
- additives reduce friction and prolong chain life.
If your saw is out of warranty and you can’t afford to buy brand name chain oil, you can use any gear oil or engine oil. It is best to change it twice a year: a thin oil in winter and a thicker one in summer.
what kind of oil to use to lubricate the chainsaw chain also depends on the wood to be worked with. For dry wood, gear oil is recommended, for raw wood it is better to use some kind of oil for diesel engines.
Raw material requirements
Gasoline used in the preparation of the mixture must be no lower than grade A-92. Other types can be used, such as AI-92 or AI-95. They must not be stored for more than three months. The reason is that when it expires, the mass fraction of tar in gasoline increases, causing polymerization reactions, which have a negative effect on the combustion chamber, where a layer of soot is formed. Gasoline must be unleaded, because the use of leaded variety will put the engine out of operation.
Chapter 7: Fueling Your STIHL Chainsaw
You should also follow the oil’s expiration date. Any high quality Partner, STIHL, or Husqvarna two-stroke oil can be used for the mixture. The choice of oil should be conditioned by the fact that it is impossible to use the latter for four-stroke engines and boats to prepare the right composition.
Always read the manual for the engine’s power rating when preparing the mixture. The last indicator shows the ratio of the volume and power of the motor and the maximum rpm).
How to prepare the fuel mix: oil and petrol proportions for a chainsaw
The chainsaw engine is the “heart” of the machine, which is why it is important to use a proper mixture of fuel.
Chain saw fuel mixture is made of two components. oil and gasoline. Chainsaws are fitted with a two-stroke engine, so oil is not added to the lubrication system (like in a four-stroke engine) but directly to the gasoline. It is very important to observe correct proportions of ingredients and, of course, in no case try to work on pure gasoline, because that way you will very quickly “kill” the chainsaw.
The oil must necessarily be designed for two-stroke engines of gardening and forestry equipment (that is, in no case can you use oil for boat motors or scooters). As practice shows, such oil can be bought in any store or service center, where chainsaws are sold or serviced.
If we talk about what gasoline pour into the chain saw, it would be optimal to use fuel with the octane number of A-95, in this case, saving on fuel can turn out badly. European manufacturers often indicate that you can use gasoline A-90 or A-92, but in post-Soviet countries, the quality of gasoline inferior to the European, so in our reality it is better to use a higher-quality gasoline.
As for the proportion of gasoline-oil mixture itself, then everything is simple: you must clearly follow the instructions of the tool. All chainsaw manufacturers indicate the necessary ratio in the instruction manual or in the tool’s certificate, moreover, the proportions for filling the chainsaw may differ depending on the model of chain saw. as a rule, the ratio of oil to gasoline in brand-name chainsaws is 1:40 or 1:50, which means one part oil to 40 parts gasoline, for instance.
Now the arithmetic: 1 liter of gasoline = 1000 ml of gasoline, divide by 40 and you get 25 ml of oil. If you do the same for the 1:50 ratio, you get 20 ml of oil per 1 liter of gasoline.
As for budget Chinese-made chainsaws, the situation is a little different. Ratio of gasoline to oil for chainsaw made in China 1:25, that is 1000 ml of petrol divided by 25, you get 40 ml of oil. the thing is that in branded chainsaws there is a solid build and the distance between pistons and cylinders in the engine is much less than in Chinese chainsaws, that’s why the required oil amount is twice as much different.
In order to measure a correct portion of oil, use an ordinary medical syringe of sufficient volume.
One more thing to be careful with. pour gasoline into a dry gasoline canister first, then oil. The procedure on the contrary is fraught with low-quality fuel mixture, because oil is more dense and will stick to the bottom of the canister. Therefore, good blending is out of the question.
Always prepare the fuel mixture in a canister and fill the gas tank with already prepared special fuel! Never prepare and do not mix it directly in the fuel tank of a chainsaw!
If the question of how to dilute gasoline for a chainsaw is solved, then and about the storage conditions and expiration date of the fuel mixture it’s worth saying a few words. It is best and easiest to prepare the fuel-oil mixture for 1 liter of gasoline, it is recommended to do it just before working with the tool. The fuel tanks in chainsaws have a capacity of 0.3 to 1 liter. In domestic use, the entire volume of the prepared combustible mixture is rarely used in a single session, so the remainder can be saved until the next session. Store the fuel mixture in a special gasoline can, in a dry, dark place. It is optimal to calculate that the storage time of the ready mixture is 7-10 days
The fact that the oil on the market now is not synthetic, but organic, that is natural. After 10 days all lubricating properties are lost, gasoline simply “eats” the oil. Naturally, you can no longer use such fuel, it can cause breakdown and failure of the chainsaw.
At the end of work it is necessary to drain the fuel mixture and start the chainsaw. the tool will stall (so that the saw has a dry carburetor) and now you can leave it until the next session of operation.
