Electrical installation tools

I noticed that there is a League of electricians on our favorite Pikabu, but there are not so many articles in it yet. I will also bring my contribution to our common cause of education and tell about hand tools which are used by electricians.

Electrical installation is usually divided into two stages. Rough, when they lay cable routes, cut strokes, drill and drill walls, etc.е. And when you install switches, sockets, hang light fixtures, and so on.

At the end of the rough electric installation, and, of course, the finishing electric installation is done not with your bare hands, but with special tools. And it is about these tools that I would like to talk to you today.

Unfortunately, there are still such “masters”, who froth at the mouth and shout that all that an electrician needs is side cutters, a knife and pliers. They consider taking insulation off wires with diagonal cutters and cutting outer cable insulation with a utility knife a privilege of a skilled installer. But I do not belong to such super-masters and I think that self-respecting installer should have special tools for every kind of job. Or maybe my hands are just growing out of the same place, judge for yourself))).

Set of my tools I have just started to gather, so the list below is very short. For me, the brand of the tool is of secondary importance, and the first thing that is important is the relationship of functionality-cost. So you won’t see anything mega expensive here, but I hope you’ll see a lot of quality.

Of course I cannot go anywhere without side cutters. That’s why they’re at the top of my list. They are very handy for biting off small cross-section copper wires, handy for biting off the ends of plastic zip ties. They also easily bite small nails, iron wire or some not very thick plates.

This tool is next to side cutters, but has a slightly different function. You can only chew copper wire and anything softer with a cable cutter. No steel cables, nails, plates or any other iron stuff. If diagonal cutters are by nature pliers that crumple the metal at the point of cutting, the cable cutter is a pair of scissors. And if you can cut a 2.5mm copper core with both tools without much difference, you can cut a 10mm core with diagonal cutters only by squeezing with both hands and farting, but the cable cutter can handle it in two counts without a titanic effort. And in the first case we get flattened edges of the wire, and in the second case we get an even cut without crumpling.

There’s nothing new to be said about this tool. Pliers are necessary thing, but I’ll tell you a secret, I use pliers with classic jaws much less often than the next tool in the list.

And these pliers I use everywhere and very often. They are very handy for gripping strands of wire when you want to get it under the clamp of the outlet or any other installation tool, or pulling plastic cable ties, twisting wires, pulling tips of wires from the places you can’t reach with your fingers.

You can do all this with ordinary pliers and at first I used them both with equal frequency, but I soon realized that the former are less convenient.

Many craftsmen have a bunch of screwdrivers and a lot of bits, but in my practice, the most commonly used screwdrivers are exactly like in the picture. Two large ones, which I use most often to pull the terminals on the protection devices during the assembly and installation of switchboards, one small flathead screwdriver, which I use to turn the screws on the small terminal clamps, and two medium-sized screwdrivers, which I use for almost everything else. I still have a box with a set of assorted bits, but it’s very rarely used, that I didn’t even bring it from the last site to take a photo for this article.

Now, a few tools I use to cut the cable.

Used mainly for the assembly of shields. I noticed that when you strip the insulation from the wire PV-3 (PuGV) stripper, whether it’s my KVT or expensive Weidemuller, which I had a chance to work, the place of separation is not very flat. Especially it is visible on wires with a large cross-section. So with the office knife I cut the insulation in a circle, and with the stripper I tear it exactly along the obtained line. But this is for the record, I will probably tell you about the shields separately later. And as for the knife, it is very handy to cut unnecessary elements of junction boxes, receptacles, to open thick packaging and to cut the packing ropes and bands.

My friend and I have a couple of those knives. It is indispensable thing to cut outside insulation of cable. You can cut through even two meters of outer insulation very quickly and effortlessly, without damaging the insulation. The knife masterfully slides the heel over the strands, which prevents them from damaging. When choosing a knife with a heel, I fell on the Knifex. I had watched a bunch of videos and read reviews before I bought it so I decided to buy it. But what was my surprise when after trying to cut insulation with it for the first time I understood that there was no gain in speed at all. I was very disappointed, but continued to work with this knife. But after a while, I realized that the problem was just a matter of skill. I would never go back to a regular knife again.к. The knife with the heel is just cosmos.

RiM electric meter control

In the last 3-4 years, they have begun to introduce “pole meters” to replace or go along with the residential meters. I had one installed. They gave me a remote control like the one in the photo

I used it to find out that the pole is equipped with a RiM 189 meter.16.

So I had to replace the automatic circuit breaker, which is after the counter at the entrance to the house. I would like to break the circuit and disconnect from the network, so as not to fumble under voltage.

I downloaded the manual for the remote from the manufacturer’s website. There is a paragraph in the instructions on how to connect the load-subscriber, and how to disconnect. no.

So the question is who has encountered or serviced such meters. Disconnection is not provided from the remote control and it can only be done from a remote control system? Or so I did not find in the instructions how to do it? Or is it possible only for representatives of the electricity supply company and to replace the circuit breaker, I have to call an electrician from the service?

Set of tools is packed in a suitcase. The minimum set consists of 6 items:

In addition to these tools, the suitcase contains additional tools for an electrician. It includes the following devices:

  • pliers;
  • Screwdriver-indicator for checking phases;
  • hammer;
  • combination pliers;
  • wrenches;
  • colorful insulating tapes;
  • heat shrink.

Electrician‘s kit in briefcases sometimes contains many items. They are used for highly complex electrical work. These cases are designed for high-end professionals.

Practically possible, in these cases a few thin conductors are added to 6mm wire, to completely fill the sleeve. This way the connection is tighter. Crimping is done with standard hydraulic pincers, but it’s better to use wires of the same diameter.

For jobs where you have to measure the parameters of electrical circuits, not only to test the cable, buy a set with the ability to measure currents up to 10A. Carefully read the specifications, some models do not measure AC current at all.

With clamp meters in any case is better, but we must proceed from the needs and financial capabilities. Electricians who test three-phase motors need non-contact current clamps every day. In other cases, perhaps less frequently, it is also possible to connect in series to the circuit to measure the load current.

When buying, be sure to ask about the pliers’ design and features. Pliers with a transformer-type frame measure only AC currents, while those with a hall sensor measure DC and AC currents.

What tools and equipment are needed for electrical installation

To perform electrical wiring, quality tools and attachments are needed for a variety of operations-from preparing grooves, recesses, and holes for routing wires and installing electrical fittings, to fixtures for sharpening tools.

Tools and appliances for electrical installation work

Of the special devices for electrical installation we should mention indicators, which are used to determine the parameters of the power grid and the presence of voltage in it.

The simplest indicator of the presence or absence of current in the network is easy to make yourself, having at hand a threaded socket, a low-powered incandescent lamp (eg, from a flashlight), two strips of wire in insulation and two metal probes.

What other tools and equipment you need to do electrical work

If you plan to place the outlet a short distance from the floor, you should prefer a device with a swivel washer or moving flap that will cover the opening when it is not in use. This is important for families with young children.

But knowing which wire is a phase wire and which is the neutral will not help you. This procedure requires such a device for electrical work as an indicator screwdriver. It works like this: it is placed against the area to be tested; touch the contact head with your hand. If it is a phase wire, the light will turn on, if it is a neutral wire, it won’t.

Use a screwdriver to determine which wire is neutral (the switch should be in the “on” position, and mark it.

To measure the parameters of the network to get a tester, which combines the functions of an ammeter, voltmeter and ohmmeter and can easily determine the current strength, voltage and network resistance.

An electric screwdriver is a quick helper

For many jobs it will be much more convenient to use an indispensable tool. an electric screwdriver. In addition to its main purpose, it will help to make holes in the walls of the panel or junction boxes. But if the price of such a tool is too high, it can be easily replaced with a cordless screwdriver. A photo of the kit is shown below.

It is recommended to buy a complete set with all the necessary attachments, since access to the right places is very often difficult in electrical installation work.

In many cases, wrenches may be necessary when performing installation work. These tools should be marked and match the diameter of the bolts and nuts. Tool jaws should be parallel, there should be no protruding pieces or splinters, and the grip should rest comfortably in the palm of the hand.

Different wrench diameters

This marking should appear on the tool:

Open ended wrenches. This kind of tool helps you work with nuts and bolts when it’s quite tight over the nut. It is necessary when the bolt head is inaccessible.

Not suitable for deep and tightly driven screws.

Combination wrenches. One side open, the other side closed. The socket side can have up to twenty faces.

What’s in an electrician‘s kit?


Screwdrivers are indispensable tools for electricians. When choosing, pay attention to the handle. it should lie comfortably in the hand, not slip out of it. Finger support is a must.

Screwdrivers are available in 18 types, not including hexagonal or rectangular screw heads for the standard wrench. You don’t need to buy everything. Most exotic slits you are unlikely to meet.

A standard set of five to six screwdrivers is enough:

In addition, you can buy a screwdriver with removable bits, which will be in addition to the standard flat and Phillips head, Torx (star) and Hexagon (Allen key, aka Allen key or INBUS).

If you plan to repair appliances yourself. a torque screwdriver will not hurt. Screws with Tri-Wing (triangle), Torq-set (offset cross-shaped slot) are also increasingly common in foreign-made electrical equipment.

Please note! Professional dielectric screwdrivers have an insulated rod. This is a must for repairing high voltage electrical systems from 1000 V. But such an improvement can save a lot of effort, nerves. It will protect you from accidental electric shock, short circuits. Therefore, at least a couple of fully insulated screwdrivers should be in the kit.


When installing or repairing electrical wires, you may need wrenches. They are used infrequently, so a minimal set is enough:

  • Standard impact wrenches with 10, 12, 14, 17 mm heads;
  • adjustable wrench;
  • It is also helpful to have swivel keys for work in hard-to-reach places.

In today’s kit a set of Torx and INBUS (socket head with internal hex) wrenches comes in handy.

Pliers, wire cutters, pliers

  • Pliers. combine pliers, wire cutters, wire cutters (grooves on the outside of the jaws);
  • Pliers. thanks to the elongated jaws it is convenient to climb in difficult places, to hold small parts;
  • Diagonal or side-cutting pliers. for cutting wire, stripping insulation (the bottom edge of the blades has a special reaming).

Standard kit can be expanded with end-cutters, round pliers. They speed up some types of work, but can be replaced by tools from the mandatory list.


Or a pliers for stripping. Some models have the function of a crimping pliers. They were once only available to professional electricians. Now you can pick up the simplest stripper for two or three dollars.

Other hand tools

During electrical work, you often have to remove insulation, cut thin wiring. Work will be simplified by a utility knife with a hook shape. The most convenient. with a large handle, small blade (in the ratio of 2 or 3 to 1).

If you intend to lay a strobe for wiring, install sub-sockets, dowels. you will need a hammer and chisel.

Electric soldering iron

Soldering allows you to increase the electrical conductivity of the contacts, protect them from oxidation, overheating in the future.

A 50 watt soldering iron will work for soldering boards. To work with wiring. 80-100 watts. You will also need rosin, solder.

Measuring Instruments

You’ll need several types of gauges at once for safe, fast wiring work:

  • screwdriver. to determine whether a wire, contact is live or not;
  • multimeter for determining the strength, current, voltage, resistance. Used for “probing” contacts, searching for breaks, assessing the performance of semiconductors, fuses, and circuit breakers;
  • A caliper to help you measure the diameter of a wire if it is not labeled.

When installing switches, sockets, lighting fixtures you may need a concealed wiring indicator. But if the budget does not allow. you can do without it.

Additional materials

Can’t do without insulating materials when doing electrical work. Make sure you always have a few rolls of duct tape, heat shrinkable tape, rubber gloves. A tape measure and a pencil will be needed.

The power tool

The most universal electric tool for an electrician. a rotary tool with a set of drills, bits, blades, drills. Used to make holes when installing switches, sockets, conduits for hidden laying of electrical cables. If the budget is limited. you can use an impact drill, but only if the amount of work is small.

But an electric screwdriver is an optional accessory in an electrician‘s kit. In most cases, it is inconvenient to use. Usually used for assembling the switchboard. Therefore, you should not buy it specifically for electrical installation work.

The main task of the tool is to provide fast and safe work with high quality. Think in advance what you will need, so as not to overpay for unnecessary accessories.

Choose the right tool for you. It does not have to be expensive, first of all it should be convenient, safe.
