Disassembling a STIHL 180 chain saw. Part 1
Pavel Omelin Hello Vasily! The video shows you have a good understanding of the STIHL MS 180. My chainsaw has been running for 5 years and now it’s starting to stall. I’ll tell you how: start the chainsaw, starts up normally, then cut wood, after a while (5-10 minutes) begins to stall at idle in the interval between cuts. I turn it on its side, revs up and doesn’t stall. Please tell me what may be the reason? Given that was replaced filters, carburetor and no backlash on the crankshaft bearing.
My schtick has been working for seven years on the wood chopping and sawing and all is normal, but the compression is no longer the same, and it often stops when idling. but if the chain is sharpened, it saws like a new one. Sprocket is good. change it and the clutch sprocket has a lot of wear !
You take it apart like an AKM. I was afraid to get into mine !
Why is the oil sticking out to the oil level window? ?

Paul, you probably drink a lot of energy drinks)))) such speed disassembly. I do not know what to remember. I do not even have time to see a lot)))
Good day! Please tell me, STIHL 180 starts fine, rpm is also fine, but no idle. Tried to adjust, nothing works, what is the reason? Where to look?
Good afternoon! Please tell me, STIHL 180 starts fine, rpm is also working fine, but no no idle. I tried to adjust it, it does not work, what is the reason?? Where to look for?
Hello Pavel. Please tell me where I can buy a piston stop (in what online store), which you use? Thanks for the reply
I took it apart without the video for about 50 minutes 🙂 now I understand some things.
Did not like it, apparently, those two who on the advice of friends bought a Partner instead of the Stihl. Vasily, what city are you from??
Pavel, good day.the chain stopped turning on the tire. The clutch does not turn, frozen in place, how to remove it?
Completed the video, everything quickly unwinds, because there is no point.
He’s a real craftsman and explains everything very clearly,
Vasiliy is a real master. Does everything quickly and most importantly correctly. Get the “Like”. Pasha give the mark to Vasily because you’re just a cameraman.
Explain why the muffler is split in two. And where do you get compressed air from?? No compressor can be heard.
The candle goes in on the chinese chainsaw. Similar to STIHL.
Hello! I need help. Guys, I have a Stilka 180 when I’m sawing. It’s stalling. It’s fine at idle. What can be? Thanks in advance!
Very helpful I am afraid to take it apart even just to clean it now I can see it clearly
Hello Vasily, I have a STIHL 180s since 2008. (Gave it away for free) Starts, rpm is high, but no power at all. The compression is very weak. I would like to ask you, just change the piston as you did. Or already together with a cylinder. Or do you think it’s a different kind of failure??
Hello Hello, I took the STIHL ms180 apart and put it back together like shown in the video but now it has a slow start, won’t hold rpms and then shuts down, Please help me please!? Please advise what to do!?
Hi Vasya ! need help what can be a chainsaw cold start. There’s no grit. And how to correctly adjust the carburetor. help you can
Thank you so much VASILY.Your video was very helpful.if I could shake your hand.
Pavel please tell me where I can buy a piston STIHL 271 not one online store and in my town do not have them
Please advise how to determine the degree of wear of the chain sprocket to be replaced?
Do not try to repair the tool yourself. As a rule, it will only get more expensive
Hello Vasily, I have a question, is it possible or not to sharpen the motor mount bushings, thanks in advance.
Thank you, Vasily! All to the point and without unnecessary words. And the speed of the disassembly is so fast that the camera has no time to focus. 🙂
I’m in trouble. they say a kopeck for diagnostics and a 4500 for the repair. I will go to pick it up on Tuesday, but I can’t make any claims. I don’t want to give a grand. the saw worked every once and I don’t think they did anything at all, requiring a new carb for 1700, oil hose for 1000, oil seals and bearings for 2000. The saw has a maximum of one hour.5 hours, maybe less, but I think they’ll take the good parts off my saw and I’m screwed. I can’t believe these faggots are after my lopper !? I ADMIRE YOUR WORK. YOU PEEKED RIGHT INTO MY SOUL FROM THE COMPUTER.
No, it’s not. After the flood to clean the STIHL. Who did you make this video for? Masters like you?? Or they put it on fast motion. I can’t remember shit, I can’t understand what to do with my hands. If you’re going to teach people to do such little things themselves, then teach them as in Yaselki. The fucking wizard.
What could be a water hammer in a negative pressure hose?
All clear and understandable, without unnecessary stuttering. 🙂 Thank you for the video.
i can’t get any fuel to the carburetor, i cleaned it, i blew the fuel to the carburetor, what else can i do?
Thank you for such a video tutorial, everything seems clear, let’s try to fix mine
Thanks, Vasily. Half an hour picking at this flywheel where the cams are, in the hope of removing it, pulling on this incomprehensible spring under the dust cover cam flywheel. then spit. turned on the computer and turned to YouTube.Thanks. understandable, fast. not really neat, but still a BIG THANK YOU.
hello help can not unscrew the clutch or stuck or do not know what to think, tell me please if possible
Hello. I am facing this problem. I bought a new piston and decided to install it but the new pin does not fit the cage and crankshaft.Question replacement of the crankshaft to Chinese or can you buy a cage of this size? Who can help?
Please tell me where you buy a clutch stopper, or a link to the store?
Help. saw started in the lowest position (air damper closed) and does not stop like it should be according to the instructions.
Afternoon.tell me what could be wrong.the chainsaw starts up nice and hot for a minute and when you accelerate it starts up, it stops working
great video.It is simple and straightforward.Congratulations to the master
How do you do, Pavel? Thanks for the tip from Vasily, but the problem with heavy chain lubrication oil leakage was solved only after I put a plastic bushing / a piece of tube from a syringe in the oil inlet hose to the pump.
The expediency of timely replacement of worn out parts of the chain drive
The design of its crown sprocket determines such an important parameter as the choice of chain pitch.
- Installing a new part on a worn sprocket reduces the smoothness of its movement, accelerates wear, initiates the risk of breaking the sprocket and creates an injury hazard.
- There is also an increase in the operating loads on the motor and kinematic elements of the tool.
- The same process occurs when installing old sprocket chains on a tire, the diameter of which is adjusted to the size of the tire by removing some of the links.
It is also not recommended by specialists to change sprockets sizes arbitrarily. The experiment may have a negative impact on engine life and kinematics of the tool as a whole.
Safe sawing operations of varying degrees of difficulty are ensured by an effective emergency stop brake and devices that block the chain ends from flying off in the event of an accidental breakage. In any variant. the most reliable prevention of emergency situations, maintenance of chainsaw in serviceable technical condition.
When to remove the clutch
Disassembly of the clutch for the purpose of removal is carried out in such cases:
- when the spring has burst (the chain will rotate, the engine will run erratically);
- The spring has come off;
- when a piece of the drum breaks off (in this case you will hear a noise and the chain will also rotate);
- temporary wear and tear (it’s time to remove and replace the clutch because it has used up its life).
Today’s chain saws have two-stroke engines that are linked to the chain with a reducer. The chain moves along the bar, and according to the centrifugal principle at idle should remain stationary, that is, be safe for the one who is holding the chainsaw.
If the load placed on the tool exceeds the recommended load, the clutch will loosen or completely stop transmitting torque to the tire. This will cause the engine to stop. When these situations occur, the clutch will wear out, so it needs to be replaced over time. In the instruction manual to the chainsaw, some manufacturers have information that the clutch is an expendable part, that is, is subject to periodic replacement.

We’ll tell you how to set the ignition on your chainsaw correctly
The way you set the ignition on your chain saw has a big impact on the start possibility and the durability of the parts if you do not do it properly. So, as we said before you have to set the distance between the coil and the flywheel correctly. And according to the order (the instructions for the tool also says it), it should be from 0.2 mm to 0.4 mm. Of course, it is almost impossible to do this “by eye”, so it is better to have a special device. You might need it later on. So, what are our actions one by one?
- Initially it is necessary to loosen the bolts fixing the ignition.
- Between the handwheel and the coil you can already freely put the necessary distance.
- Tighten the mounting screws to secure the coil.
The whole process is not laborious in terms of the procedure itself, but in terms of observing that very minimum range so as not to let the two components, the flywheel and the coil, touch each other. Modern trimmer users often use tissue paper, a standard sheet of A4 paper or even strips from plastic bottles. Only they know how safe it is, but we advise to use only special templates to avoid unwanted consequences in the tool’s work. The distance itself for each individual trimmer for grass should be prescribed in the instruction manual. If you have made this procedure, and the machine did not start, then it is worth checking the spark plug or the coil itself. In case of failure of the latter. you can always buy a new lawn mower spool from us and work with pleasure!
How to unscrew the clutch on your chainsaw
The operation to remove the clutch and drum is quite simple and with a trained hand requires about 1 minute of time. If you know the nuances and prepare in advance, there will be no problems, but with a spontaneous approach, the procedure is significantly delayed, if not thwarted at all. The following instruction how to disassemble the clutch on a chain saw in various ways, using the available tools and in a clear and step-by-step manner.
The first and easiest step is to remove the bar cover, by unscrewing the 2 fastening nuts, with the hex wrench from the chainsaw kit. The guide bar and chain are also removed (if installed).
If it has an outer drum, you can remove it by just taking out the circlip. It is more convenient to perform this operation with a slotted screwdriver.
Since the overrunning clutch is fixed to the shaft, an attempt to unscrew it will only lead to the rotation of parts. It is necessary to fix the position of the crankshaft, by installing a stop for the piston, through the spark plug hole. As a stopper, you can use special devices, the cost of which starts from 200 If there is no possibility and desire to spend time searching for such a stop, you can always place in the combustion chamber an ordinary cable with a knot.
After fixing the position of the shaft, you can proceed to unscrew the coupling. It is not usually equipped with a compression nut for a ring spanner and disassembly involves the use of a special puller. The cost of such devices starts from several hundred and often exceeds the cost of the coupling itself.
As an alternative, you can use the key from the angle grinder or rip with a hammer with a chisel. Alternatively, you can use a chainsaw bar, putting 2 short bolts through its holes and tightening them with nuts from the back. You can make a homemade clutch puller, marking and drilling in a sheet of metal (from 4 mm), corresponding grooves, in which to pass and tighten the screws. In general, there are many sophisticated ways to “hook” the clutch without excessive cost. Some use a wrench or pliers to loosen them.
It should be specified that in order to securely fasten the coupling, a retainer is applied to the threads of the shaft, which connects these elements extremely firmly. It can be difficult to break such a clutch, even with a convenient stop. To facilitate the disassembly process and to protect the piston and the rest of the mechanism from damage, the threads should be heated with a gas torch or construction hair dryer. The high temp will loosen the adhesive properties of the latch and make it easier to separate parts.
Having unlocked the overrunning clutch, continue unscrewing in a clockwise direction (left-hand thread).
Under the clutch, on the shaft may be a large metal washer separating the components (not on all models). Remove it, and after it, the drum with the needle bearing. Clutch removed.
If the above guide, did not fully convey the essence, reinforce the acquired knowledge with a visual demonstration of the whole process. The following short video guide, with helpful Комментарии и мнения владельцев by the author, will explain in detail how to remove and repair chain saw clutch with your own hands, with minimal time expenditure.
The description of clutch disassembly process can be called a universal one, applicable to all modern models of saws. As mentioned above, the main design difference can be seen in the location of the sprocket, which is usually located inside (between the clutch and crankcase), but may be installed outside (this is much easier to change). For the rest, if you want to understand how to remove the clutch from a Partner or Husqvarna chainsaw, it is sufficient to read the above instruction, which reflects all the steps of the process. Small nuances, characteristic of certain models (fixing the air duct cover, chain tensioner), usually do not cause difficulties and are easily resolved on their own, or with the help of technical documentation.
Design features of the saws
STIHL brand professional chainsaws
There are already several dozen chainsaws by different manufacturers, capacities, and, most importantly, special purposes in operation. The saws are divided into:
Accordingly, their drive pinion will be different, as well as the sequence of operations. This is a peculiarity of saw gearboxes. Most professional tools have the ability to change its position on the saw in two planes.

Adjusting the carburetor on a scooter. how to adjust the carburetor correctly
Carburetor insist several steps, which include:
- Idle speed, its adjustment;
- Checking the composition of the mixture and its quality, by means of a screw;
- Checking the composition of the mixture by means of the needle;
- Adjusting the fuel level in the float chamber.
Each item should be considered in more detail.
Idle stroke adjustment.
This part is present in every scooter carburetor. Thanks to the screw, the scooter is stable when standing. First you need to warm up the engine.
We will consider the position of the adjusting screws on different models.
Honda has this arrangement:
Carburetor manufactured in China:
- idle speed adjustment screw
- fuel intake fitting
- a fitting that helps drain fuel from the float chamber
- plug screw in float chamber.
Check the quality of the mixture.
The rpm will increase as you tighten the screw. If unscrewed. decreases. You need to warm the scooter up for about 15 minutes and this screw will help you to achieve reliable idling.
Adjusting the mixture quality
The main point is that the fuel mixture is considered to be in line with the standards that are set by the manufacturers when the unit is produced. Poor mixture leads to the scooter breaking, it will often overheat and lose power. A rich mixture increases fuel consumption, impurities are formed in the combustion chamber and the carburetor gets wet. The mixture properties are regulated by a screw or by the throttle needle in the choke.
Turning the mixture adjustment screw clockwise enriches the mixture, turning it counterclockwise makes the mixture thinner. You can also watch the needle. Raising. the mixture is enriched, lowering. poorer. Being able to use both methods when adjusting will help achieve better results. However, on carburetors of such models as Suzuki Sepia, Suzuki Assress there is no first option, so you have to use only the needle and its movement.
At the beginning of the adjustment of the carburetor, the scooter engine must be warmed up. It takes 10-15 minutes. Then conduct a cleaning of the device itself. The operation of the engine will be considered ideal if the screw, which monitors the quality of the mixture, will be unscrewed in the range of 2 revolutions. The range of indicators may vary, it all depends on the engine, how worn out or other malfunctions.
With normal operation, the scooter accelerates without jerks and gaps. If you do not observe the stable operation of the device, then you need to take the throttle out of the carburetor and raise or lower the needle. To do this, you must first remove it from the choke and move it on the retaining ring along the grooves.
The color of the spark plug and its deposits on the electrodes in the scooter can determine the quality of the mixture, which gives an indication of how to properly adjust it. A black spark plug means a rich mixture with a predominant amount of soot. A white spark plug means that the mixture is poor and the electrodes are overheated and melting.
Adjusting the Fuel Level in the Float Chamber
The transparent tube at the bottom of the carburetor allows you to check the fuel level in the chamber. To do this you need to unscrew the drain screw. First, you should lift the tube up so that it is on the opposite side from the carburetor and above it. Note that the level control procedure is conducted only when the engine is running. If the level reaches the edge of the cover, it is sufficient.
However, if it is much or little, it is necessary to remove the cap and adjust the needle stop, at the moment when it is actuated. You need to bend the tip of the needle that holds it, but in small intervals.
Also, before you tune the scooter’s operation, you should make sure that:
- the carburetor was cleaned in time;
- The channels and nozzles are free of debris and other contaminants;
- the quality of the gasoline you are using has a lower octane rating than the manufacturer’s or the octane number required by the manufacturer
- The parameters that are set by the manufacturer are perfectly matched to the nozzles and other parts
If all the necessary conditions are not met, this correction will be temporary, without the expected result.
How to remove the chainsaw clutch.
In order to remove the clutch on a chainsaw, you must first remove the cutting headset, then the air filter cover and the clutch cover.
then it is necessary to block the crankshaft so that it does not rotate when the clutch is unscrewed. to lock the crankshaft with e.g. a large collar, remove the manual starter cover and screw two bolts into the rotor of the ignition system. Or unscrew the spark plug, lower the piston to NFT and lock it there by pushing a rope into the spark plug hole.
Next, unscrew the clutch itself. use a wrench from the chainsaw set or a wrench for the angle grinder discs, or a self-made wrench (for example, from an old tire with two bolts) to unscrew the clutch clockwise (there is a left-hand thread), to unscrew it you will need a considerable effort.
Then remove the sprocket drum and the drive sprocket from the chainsaw. To replace the chainsaw clutch drum, follow the rule: replace two bars. replace one drum.
Then put the new clutch on and hand-tighten it as far as it will go (turn it counterclockwise). Next you need to block the crankshaft again, to prevent breaking the starter, which is located at the other end of the crankshaft chainsaw.
Then assemble everything in the reverse order of disassembly.
To finally tighten the clutch on the chainsaw, you must pull the chain brake handle forward, start the chainsaw, and then release the brake.
